How can poultry packaging become a valuable product whichthat simultaneously relieves the
environmental burden of disposal, while having and has a net carbon-neutral
footprint?

Challenge Description - Summary

Through this challenge, Tanmiah Food Company (TFC) would like toaims to collaborate work with both
internal and external innovators to develop sustainable and innovative packaging for the poultry meat
products. TFC intends to take a net positive approach towards packaging waste by creative product
designing and materials applications in packaging. TFC is seeking new and innovative ideas that, which
when applied, will mitigate the harmful impact of poultry packaging waste.

This challenge is about:

[1.] Application of biodegradable and eco friendlyeco-friendly materials in the meat and food
packaging

The Omni Challenge alignment with Tanmiah’s Strategy and KSA vision 2030

Today, TFC stands with the vision ofcommitted to becoming the number one global halal sustainable
healthy protein company by 2030, by expanding its international presence by through continuously
enhancing its bbrand enhancement and increaseding investments in the food and agriculture sectors
around the worldworldwide. Next to expanding theirits business, TFC aims to become a more
sustainable and eco-friendly organization, thereby contributing to the national transformation
program which is a key part of KSA’s 2030 program.

Within the 2030 framework, TFC aims to engage stakeholders by identifying innovation challenges,
supporting the co-creation of innovative solutions, and contributing to the implementation of
sustainable/ecofriendlyeco-friendly initiatives. By launching this challenge, TFC want lookingaims to
contribute to: “Improving living standards and safety by reducing all types of pollution” (link) and
“Ensuring the sustainability of vital resources resources by ensuring that water, food, and natural
landscapes are protected and rehabilitated”. Keeping in wieveview both Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030
objectives, as well as the omnipreneurship omnipreneural values & principles, TFC wants to tackle the
challenge of its packaging waste head on and strives to lead by example to converting meat package
waste to value by through collaboration with innovators

The Challenge Description

Through this Omni Challenge, TFC is seeking new and innovative packaging design concepts for its
meat products products to convert the growing amounts of chicken packing waste into new useful
products that add value to the eco systemecosystem instead of creating environmental
problemproblems. The solutions sought by What TFC is looking for should have the potential to:
1. become cost-effective, economically viable,
[2.] A net positive effect on the environment: meaning the packaging should not release any additional
greenhouse gasses (GHG) or any other harmful byproductsby-products.

Moreover, the packaging design and material should answer all or some of the following questions.

Page | 2
 How to make the packing materials biodegradable?
 How to make the packaging more aesthetically more attractive to attract the customers.
 How to make the packaging ing reusable by the customers in other their day to dayday-to-day
livesfe?
 How can we easily retrieve the packaging from the market/ consumers?
 How can we reuse the retrieved packaging without compromising on biosecurity
concernconcerns?
 What would be the complete value chain associated with retrieving it from the
market/consumer?
 What would be the cost implications on of developing such a value chain?
 What would be the incentive for the consumers to give it back to Tanmiah?

TFC is focusingputtingexerting signigicantsignificant a lot of effort to becomeintoto becomeing the

first positive livestockimpact livestock company. The reasons TFC is determined to find a solution to
theirits packaging waste problem are as follows:

 The current available packaging materials of chicken trays are not suitable for the
sustainable disposal of the waste and are definitely not carbon neutral and ended up in
landfills which is creating plastic pollution in seas and land.

 While the existing biodegradable plastic do try to minimize their environmental impact,
they remain harmful to the environment as in terms of they are not retrievable or
reusable.

TFC’s Packaging waste streams

Currently, all TFC companies collectively generate about 500 thousand units of packaging in number
per day on average. This is expected to increase by up to one million per day. These packaging
includes plastic bags for fresh chicken, trays, and carboardcardboard cartons.

From the current packaging , TFC wants to create environmentally friendly value for the company. This
poultry meat package waste is currently disposed of at the end product life cycle in the landfills by the
customers. Storage and disposal of poultry packaging waste has become an environmental problem
because of the associated air, water, and soil pollution:

 Landfilling the poultry packaging waste leads to greenhouse gas emissions and loss of valuable
resources
 Pollution of soil and water with nutrients, pathogens and heavy metals is generally caused by
the packaging ending in the landfills.

TFC is aware that various methods are available for disposing of poultry waste sustainably. However,
TFC’s aim is to convert poultry packing waste into value by solving two global challenges:

1. Tackling environmental pollution and

2. Slowing down/preventing climate change.

As part of the sustainability strategy, TFC is focused on going beyond reducing harm to our planet, and
actively working to contribute positively. This is reflected in the net positive nature of the challenge of
Saudi Arabia and ultimately global ecosystem.
