and freedom of thought, speech, and
press.
Ex. Rizal and the Propaganda Movement
advocated for liberal reforms like freedom
of speech and press, which were
restricted under Spanish colonial rule.

Industrial Revolution The transition from an agrarian,


hand-production economy to one
dominated by machine manufacturing and
the factory system.
Ex. Rizal observed the impact of the
Industrial Revolution during his travels to
Europe, which influenced his thinking on
modernization and progress.

Communism A political and economic ideology that


advocates for the abolition of private
property and the common ownership of
the means of production.
Ex. In the Philippines, communism gained
traction in the 1930s with the
establishment of the Communist Party of
the Philippines (CPP). The CPP was
involved in the resistance against
Japanese occupation during World War II
and later waged an armed struggle
against the government. The New
People's Army (NPA), the armed wing of
the CPP, has been active since the late
1960s.

Communism An economic and political system that


advocates for the collective ownership of
the means of production, distribution, and
exchange.
Ex. Socialism has had a limited influence
in the Philippines. However, there have
been some socialist-leaning movements
and policies, such as the Land Reform
Program initiated by President Ferdinand
Marcos in the 1970s, which aimed to
redistribute land ownership to farmers.
