TLA on Use of Food Exchange List Part 1: DBW, TER, and Dietary Prescription

1. Determine your DBW using different methods. Show your solution.

1.1 Tannhauser Method (Broca’s Index)

Formula: DBW= (height in cm – 100) Filipino- deduct 10%

a. Given: My height = 162.56cm

b. DBW= (Ht in cm– 100)

DBW(kg) = (162.56 – 100)
= 62.56

c. Body Frame for Filipino -10%

DBW (kg)= 62.56 – (10% of 62.56)
= 62.56 – 6.256
= 56.304 kg

1.2 Hamwi Formula

Height: 5’4
= 100lbs + (4 * 5)
= 100 + 20
= 120 lbs
120 / 2.2= 54 kg
1.3 BMI Method

Formula: DBW (kg) = height in meter ( ) × 22

Solution: DBW (kg) =54kg

Height in meter: 1.6256m
1.62562 × 22
= 51 kg

2. Determine your TER using different methods. Show your solution.

2.1 TER based on PAL

DBW being used: 54 kg from BMI Formula
PAL = 35
Formula: TER = DBW X PAL
= 54kg * 35kcal
= 1890 kcal
2.2 Harris- Benedict Equation
Given: W= 54kg
H= 162.56cm
A= 20
Equation for females:
BMR (kcal/day) = 655.1 + (9.563 * 54) + (1.850 * 162) - (4.676 x 20)
= 655.1 + 516.402 + 299.7– 93.52
= 1377.682 or 1400 kcal

2.3 Mifflin – St Jeor Equation

Formula:
RMR (kcal/day) = 9.99 × W (actual) + 6.25 × H ̶ 4.92 × A ̶ 161
Solution:
RMR (kcal/day) = (9.99 × 54) + (6.25 × 162) ̶ (4.92 × 20) ̶ 161
= 539.46 + 1012.5 – 98.4 – 161
= 1292.56 or 1300 kcal

2.4 Oxford Equations

Formula:
BMR = (13.1 * W ) + 558
Solution:
BMR = (13.1 * 54) + 558
= 707.4 + 558
= 1265.4 or 1250 kcal
3. Make your own Dietary Prescription. Following the % Method CHO 60% Pro 15% Fat 25%.
Kcal = 1890
CHO = 60%
CHON = 15%
Fat = 25%

Solutions:
CHO =1890 kcal * 0.6 = 1135 kcal
=1135 / 4 kcal/g = 283.5 g

CHON =1890 kcal * 0.15 = 285 kcal

=285 / 4 kcal/g = 70.875 g

Fat =1890 kcal * 0.25 = 470 kcal

= 470 / 9 kcal/g = 118.125 g

Dietary Rx: TER kcal- C – P – F

: 1900 – 285 – 70 - 120
