METHOD STATEMENT FOR HOLLOW CONCRETE


BLOCKWORK

1. The proportion of mortar to be used shall be 1: 3 (cement and sand).

2. Ensure blocks are cured properly before use, block should be thoroughly
soaked with water before placing.

3. Care shall be taken not to use blocks with broken edges and corners.

4. Ensure that blocks having cracks are not to be used. The blocks shall
have sound edges.

5. Clean up all foreign loose particles on the blocks.

6. The blocks shall be tested in appropriate laboratories for compressive


strength.

7. Approved Damp Proof Course shall be provided below the first layer of
block work.

8. Proper hacking shall be done and rush coat applied to adjoining


R.C.C.works.

9. Use half piece for staggering the joints of the blockwork.

10. Wherever required use grinders to cut pieces as per site requirement for
the horizontal pieces but not smaller than 10 cm. No horizontal cut
permitted.

11. Use mechanical mixers for mixing the mortar for the blockwork.

12. Horizontal or vertical reinforced stiffners shall be provided whenever


the block work panels exceed 14 m2. Expanded stainless steel mesh
joint reinforcement shall be provided horizontally. For 200 mm wide
blockwork, block reinforcement width shall be 110 mm.

13. The blocks shall be laid to a maximum of 5 layers at a time in one day to
allow the mortar to set and provide rigidity.

14. The uniformity of the joints shall be maintained by using 1 cm wide
spacer sticks.

15. Care shall be taken to rake up the joints when the mortar is slightly dry.

16. Ensure that approved stainless steel hold fast is used in alternate layers
for fixity of the blockwork to the end columns.

17. Ensure that the plumbness in verticality and the horizontal alignment is
maintained at every layer of the blockwork.

18. The total nos. of layers of blockwork is adjusted with height of wall to
be made and the difference is adjusted by providing the same height of
mortar below the first layer of blockwork.

19. After the blockwork is erected, clean the face of the blockwork from
loose mortar, which is falling from time to time.

20. In general maintain a good line, level and neat work in accordance with
the plan.

21. Ensure proper curing of the blockwork after the setting of the mortar.

22. Horizontal reinforcement shall be provided as specified (drawings &


specification) and in the first and second courses of blockwork above
and below openings and shall be extended not less than 800 mm either
side of the openings.

23. External blockwork should be provided with thermal insulation. U value


shall be 0.37 W/M2 0 C.
