HOW EARTH GET HEATEDUP ?
} Earth receives Solar insolation(heat)
in the form of short waves
} short waves are high energy waves
} It can’t be absorbed by most of the
green house gases
} solar radiations are mainly absorbed
by earth
} Earth reflects back this solar
radiations as long wave terrestrial
radiations
} Terrestrial radiations can be absorbed
green house gases like carbon dioxide.
} green house gas absorbs and re emits
this terrestrial radiations
} and there by it heat up the
atmosphere
WAYS OF TRANSFER OF HEAT
ENERGY

1.Radiation
2.Conduction
3.Convection
4.Advection
WAYS OF TRANSFER OF HEAT
ENERGY
1. Radiation
} Heat transfer from one body to
another without actual contact or
movement of matter.
2. Conduction
} Heat transfer from one body to another
body through contact
3. Convection
} Transfer of heat energy by actual
transfer of matter or substance from
one place to another.
4. Advection
} Heat transfer through horizontal
movement of wind
} Earth as a whole does not accumulate
or loose heat. It maintains its
temperature.
} Consider that the insolation received at the
top of the atmosphere is 100 per cent.
}

} While passing through the atmosphere

some amount of energy is reflected,
scattered and absorbed. Only the remaining
part reaches the earth surface.

} Roughly 35 units are reflected back to

space even before reaching the earth’s
surface.
} The reflected amount of radiation is called
the albedo of the earth.

} The remaining 65 units are absorbed, 14

units within the atmosphere and 51 units
by the earth’s surface.

} The earth radiates back 51 units in the

form of terrestrial radiation.
} Of these, 17 units are radiated to space
directly and the remaining 34 units are
absorbed by the atmosphere

} 48 units absorbed by the atmosphere are

also radiated back into space.

} Thus, the total radiation returning from the

earth and the atmosphere respectively is
17+48=65 units which balance the total of
65 units received from the sun.
} Earth’s atmosphere is majorly heated up by
a) Convection

b) Terrestrial radiation

c) Solar insolation

d) Advection
} Which of the following are the factors
influences temperature distribution?
1. Latitude
2. Air mass
3. Ocean currents
4. Distance from sea
5. Altitude
Choose the correct answer
a) 1, 2, 3 & 4 only
b) 1, 2 & 5 only
c) 2, 3, 4 & 5 only
d) All of the above
Consider the following statements:
1. High clouds primarily reflect solar radiation
and cool the surface of the Earth.
2. Low clouds have a high absorption of infrared
radiation emanating from the Earth’s surface
and thus cause warming effect.
Which of the statements given above is/are
correct?
(a) 1 only
(b) 2 only
(c) Both 1 and 2
(d) Neither 1 nor 2
