TYPE OF SURVEY
❑ Control surveys establish a network of horizontal and
vertical monuments that serve as a reference framework
for initiating other surveys
❑ Topographic surveys determine locations of natural and
artificial features and elevations used in map making.
❑ Land, boundary, and cadastral surveys establish property
lines and property corner markers
❑ Hydrographic surveys define shorelines and depths of lake
s, streams, oceans, reservoirs, and other bodies of water.

❖ Distance Measurement
1. How to measure the horizontal
distances?
Engineering Surveying
GPS
Is the Global Positioning Systems (GPS) that can
provide precise location information for virtually
any type of survey. Laser-scanning instruments
combine automatic distance and angle measurem
ents to compute dense grids of coordinated poin
ts.

Adjustments
When the absolute size of an error is known, and when weights have
been assigned to measurements having varying reliabilities,
corrections to the field data are made so that the error is eliminated by
applying corrections that reflect the various weightings.
It is obvious that measurements having large weights are corrected
less than measurements having small weights. (The more certain the
measurement, the larger the weight.) It follows that correction factors
should be in inverse ratio to the corresponding weights.

❖WEIGHTS OF OBSERVATIONS
If the reliability of different sets of measurements varies o
ne to the other, then equal consideration cannot be given
to those sets. Some method (weighting) must be used to a
rrive at a best value.
For example, measurements may be made under varying
conditions, by people with varying levels of skills, and
they may be repeated a varying number of time

Example
Assume the observed angles of a certain plane triangle, and the
ir relative weights, are A = 49°51'15", Wa = 1; B = 60°32'08",
Wb = 2; and C = 69°36'33", Wc = 3.
Compute the weighted mean of the angles.
