Goat on a Rope

A goat is in a grassy field. The goat likes to eat any grass that it can reach. An imprint is left
in the field where the grass has been eaten.

The goat is tied to a 5 metre long metal pole. The pole is tied to a post in the middle of the
field. The pole is free to move around the post.

Can you describe the imprint that the goat will leave in the field?

The pole is now replaced by a 5 metre rope. The goat is tied to the rope and the rope
is tied to the post.

The goat is next tied by a 5 metre long rope to the corner of a square shed in the
middle of the grass field. The shed is 3 metres wide.

· The goat is still tied to the same shed although the length of the rope is increased to 7 metres.

The goat is now tied to an equilateral triangular shed of length 3 metres by a 5
metre long rope.

Next the goat is tied by a 3 metre rope to a rail in the shapes indicated below. The
rope is fixed to the rail although free to move along the length of the rail.

Again draw the area that the goat can reach.
