Ch2 MOTION Set 1

REST & MOTION

A body is said to be in the state of rest if it does not change its position with respect to its surroundings
over time.

A body is said to be in the state of motion if it changes its position with respect to its surroundings over
time.

Rest and motion are relative: Rest and motion are the relative terms because they depend on the
observer’s frame of reference.

E.g. If you are sitting on a train and the train is standing at the platform then person standing on the
platform will look like at he/she is at rest. But if train start moving forward and the person standing at
the platform is still at rest; the person on the train will feel person on the platform is moving backward.

In another example, let it be that you are travelling in a bus. So to you all other passengers on the bus
are at rest. However for a person who's outside the bus, everyone inside the bus is moving. Hence, in
the first example when you are the reference object, the passengers are stationary that is in rest. But on
the other hand, when the reference object is a person outside the moving bus, the same passengers are
in motion that is moving.

NOTE: Due to the constant motion of all objects in universe, we are all technically in motion. We may
be sitting on a bench and thinking we’re in a state of rest. However, an astronaut in space will see the
earth and everything on it in motion, including us on the bench!

MOTION: A body can exhibit several kinds of motion; viz.

1. Translational motion
2. Rectilinear motion
3. Curvilinear motion
4. Circular motion
5. Rotatory motion
6. Oscillatory motion
7. Vibratory motion
8. Periodic
9. Non-periodic motion
10. Random motion
