ACTIVITY NO. 1

ACTIVITY 1: LET’S GO BEYOND!

1. Discuss briefly the 3 major sociological perspectives in studying sociology, namely; (15
pts)
a. Functional Theory
It defined as a discrepancy between socially prescribed ends, goals, or values, and
the available institutional means or procedures for attaining them.
A modern-day example of functionalism would be the education system.
Education plays a major role in the function of society in many ways. Besides
providing an academic education to make children functional members of society,
education also serves to teach children socialization skills.

b. Conflict Theory
Conflict theory, first developed by Karl Marx, is a theory that society is in a state
of perpetual conflict because of competition for limited resources. Conflict theory
holds that social order is maintained by domination and power, rather than by
consensus and conformity.
Conflict theory describes the relationship between employers and employees as
one of conflict, in which the employers wish to pay as little as possible for the
employees' labor, while the employees wish to maximize their wages.

c. Symbolic Interactionism
It is a sociology theory that seeks to understand humans' relationship with their
society by focusing on the symbols that help us give meaning to the experiences in our
life.

While it might seem like a big name, symbolic interactionism is how your
experiences add subjective meanings to symbols and letters. For example, the word 'dog'
is just a series of letters. Through your interactions with the letter’s 'dog', you see this as a
furry, four-legged canine.
2. Define research. To what extent is sociological research scientific? (10 pts)
Research is defined as the creation of new knowledge and/or the use of existing
knowledge in a new and creative way so as to generate new concepts, methodologies and
understandings. This could include synthesis and analysis of previous research to the
extent that it leads to new and creative outcomes.
Sociology applies the scientific method and aims to understand how groups that
people may experience life and be affected by values, beliefs, behaviors, and even events
and the way society is structured. Applying a scientific analysis helps us begin to
understand a large, socially complex picture.
3. If you want to conduct a study on the life of sex workers, which research method will you
use and why? (5 pts)
The research method that I use to conduct a study about the life of sex workers is
Qualitative Research Design Method because it is the collection of data procedures that
can lead to unintentional violations of confidentiality. Qualitative approach was adopted
as this approach emphasized people's lived experience and suited for health care research
and stigma research.

4. A sociologist who wants to conduct research on sensitive issues like homosexuality may
choose to disguise his/her identity so the data won’t be compromised. What are the
ethical aspects that the researcher will consider and why? (20 pts)

These principles include voluntary participation, informed consent, anonymity,

confidentiality, potential for harm, and results communication. Ensuring that everybody
involved in the research is fully informed of its purpose, methods and intended uses is a
very important ethical concern. They must also be aware of what their participation in the
research entails and any risks that might be involved.
