MESSAGE FROM THE
COMMANDER OF THE ARMY


As the Commander of the Army, I am delighted to pen this message to the 'Golden Log', the
annual journal of the Army School of Logistics. Also, I take this opportunity to admire everyone’s
contribution to the 'Golden Log' and may it prosper and thrive year by year.

Today, the Army School of Logistics has reached an important milestone as it is holding the
Graduation of the 5th Logistics Staff Course for the Officers of the Sri Lanka Army, Sister Services and
Officers from friendly foreign countries.

Logistics has been considered as an indispensable part of military sustenance. General Dwight
David Eisenhower, an American Army General and Statesman who served as the 34th President of the
United States once stated that "You will not find it difficult to prove that, battles, campaigns,
and even wars have been won or lost primarily because of logistics" . The success of a war not
only depends on war strategies but also logistic strategies. It has been proven in the history of the
warfare that, poor logistics management of the Armed Forces brings failure in the wars. In Sri Lankan
context, there are many examples for the importance of logistics support for the effective management
of successful military operations.

As the Army is stepping towards more promising professional journey, swift changes have been
taken to enhance knowledge and skills of Army personnel. In order to provide much intellectual
foundation and recognition to the Logistics Staff Course, the Logistics School has been affiliated to the
Kotelawala Defence University to award MBA Degree in Logistics Management on successful completion
of the course.

In this context, the Army School of Logistics has shouldered the responsibility of producing
Officers and Other Ranks with the required knowledge and expertise in the fields of Logistics and
Administration. I am pleased to state that the Army School of Logistics is committed to impart required
knowledge for the Officers in the fields of Logistics and Administration while upholding its motto
'Professionalism through Wisdom'.
In conclusion, I extend my sincere gratitude to the Commandant and the Directing Staff of the
Army School of Logistics for their commitment and effort to mould the Officers as expert Logistics
Planners at tactical level. Also, I congratulate the graduating Officers for achieving the designatory letters
'Lsc' and wish them all the very best for their future accomplishments!

Lieutenant General
Commander of the Sri Lanka Army
MESSAGE FROM THE VICE CHANCELLOR
GENERAL SIR JOHN KOTELAWALA DEFENCE UNIVERSITY

It is with gladness that I send expressions of good wishes to the ‘Golden Log’, the Annual Journal
of the Army School of Logistics, Trincomalee; published concurrently with the graduation of the Officers
who completed the Logistics Staff Course No-5. The Army School of Logistics (ASL), which is one of the
leading defence institutions affiliated to General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU), has been
doing an appreciable service in training Officers of the Sri Lanka Army in the fields of logistics and
administration. Logistics Staff Course (LSC) is the highest professional course in the fields of
administration and logistics held for the Officers of the Sri Lanka Army and friendly foreign countries.

The LSC was initiated by ASL with the prime objective of developing professional knowledge,
skills and attitudes of Middle Grade Officers. This facilitates the training of Officers and enables them to
serve in the capacity of senior logistics appointment holders of the Sri Lank Army. I am confident that the
students have diligently performed as a batch comprising of a reasonable number of participants. As
diligently engaging students they are reading for Master of Business Administration in Logistics
Management Degree in addition to Logistics Staff Course Qualification.

The Student Officers of Logistics Staff Course No -5 spent three months at the beginning of their
course at KDU following a full time English Course with the aim of enhancing their English language
proficiency in academic and professional contexts. In the mid term they returned to ASL to continue with
their course enrolling in many logistics related course modules, such as, Inventory and Warehouse
Management, Supply Chain Management, Procurement Management and International Trade. It also
includes managerial modules on Managerial Economics, Marketing Management and Public Financial
Management. At the same time, modules, such as, Operations Research and Business Statistics provide
the students hands on experience to tackle the logistical problems in a systematic manner. The students
were also required to submit a dissertation under the guidance of academic supervisors. Guidelines for
the research were taught in the module, Research Methodology. After successful completion of their
programme they will be conferred with a Master’s Degree in Business Administration in Logistics
Management. I am confident that the Student Officers graduating this year will practically apply the skills
and knowledge bestowed through the degree programme. As professional Officers they will also
contribute towards the services and prosperity of the Sri Lanka Army.
I would like to congratulate the Student Officers graduating this year. Further I extend words of
appreciation to the faculty members of KDU for their contribution towards the success of the course. At
the same time, I extend my compliments to the Commandant and Directing Staff of the ASL for the
dedication and commitment. I wish the Army School of Logistics every success in their future directions.

HISTORY
Clappenbeurg, situated in Trincomalee was a part of the British Naval and Aeronautic Platoons
who had set up an Air Feld at China Bay since the early 1900s, and the Naval Dockyard for the protection
of the deep water natural harbour in Trincomalee.

At first it functioned as a center for repairing the mechanically damaged air crafts and ships and
before World War II, the British built a large air field to house their Royal Air Force Base, called the Royal
Air Force Base at China Bay comprising of fuel storage and support facilities for the British Fleet.

After the fall of Singapore, Trincomalee became the home castle of the Eastern Fleet of the Royal
Navy and submarines of the Dutch Navy. On 9 April 1942, the Trincomalee Harbour and Air Field had
been attacked by the Carrier Fleet of the Imperial Japanese Navy throughout their Indian Ocean raid.
The targets were British War Ships at Trincomalee Harbour. The 1940s HMS Hermes War Ship, harbour
installations and air bases went up in flames. The object was to disrupt the war effort of British Common
Wealth Nations and force the British Eastern Fleet to leave Asian waters.

Royal Navy cannons at Trincomalee harbour

HMS Hermes, HMAS Vampire and the Fower Class Corvette HMS Hollyhock had been sunk. The
Royal Air Force lost at least eight Hurricanes. The Japanese misplaced five bombers and six fighters, one
in a suicide assault on a gas tank in China Bay, Trincomalee. However this set up later served as an
important launching factor for British Naval Operations in 1944 and 1945. The hangers even in use
nowadays are part of the unique store facility. The Naval and Air Bases had been taken over by the
government of Sri Lanka in 1957 and until such time, Trincomalee became an important base for the
Royal Military. From the 1960s to 1980s, this camp was used as a storage facility and distribution centre
of rice, flour and sugar by the Department of Food and subsequently abandoned in the year 1985.

With the appearance of the separatist conflict in 1983, Clappenburg gave shelter to the Internally
Displaced People from the North and East escaping from the terrorist onslaught. Although the 1990s, the
Sri Lanka Army etched the very first bankruptcy of using this as a military camp whilst the 4th Armoured
Regiment moved in and occupied the premises.
In 1990s Sri Lanka Army installed, the 4th Armoured Regiment in Clappenbug and in 1994
Clappenburg was transformed to the Replenishment Park and used as the Transit Camp for the soldiers
who travelled from the north and east via the essential sea route. After the capture of A9 Main Supply
Route to Jaffna by terrorists, Clappenburg was used as a Transit Camp for the soldiers to travel from the
North and East by the vital sea route. Initially, the Transit Camp and the Replenishment Park were
commanded by two Commanders. In addition to its task a separate Recruit Training Centre was
established in 2009 to train nearly 1000 recruits at once.

INCEPTION OF ARMY SCHOOL OF LOGISTICS

Soon after the final stage of the humanitarian operations in the north and east, no urgency arose
to preserve a Transit Camp and a Replenishment Park in this area. Therefore, its change determined to
shut down the entire Transit Camp and Replenishment Park in February 2011 and to establish a separate
Training Centre with the mission to educate Officers and Senior Non Commissioned Officers of the Sri
Lanka Army in the field of Logistics.

Lighting the traditional oil lamp by the Chief Guest

As a result, the Army School of Logistics was auspiciously declared open on 9 May 2011 by then

Logistics. Brigadier M H P Mihindukulasuriya USP psc Lsc completed duties as the first Commandant of
the Army School of Logistics and Lieutenant Colonel HAM Premaratne as the first Chief Instructor.

Since its inception of ASL in 2011, up to the 2014, only the Junior Officers Logistics Course (JOLC)
and Senior Non Commissioned Officers Logistics Course (SNCO’S) were conducted at the Army School of
Logistics.
