Atoms are made up of smaller particles and mainly empty space.

Electrons

 Negatively charged
 Move around the nucleus in shells
 Shells are also called energy levels
Nuclide notations

Atoms notation in periodic table

Bohr model

 A theory of atoms proposed by Niels Bohr

 States that:
 Electrons move in fixed circular orbits around the nucleus
 The orbits are known as energy levels or electron shells
 Electrons cannot occupy more than one shell/energy level at a time
 Electrons move around in different shells/energy levels
 The further an electron is to the nucleus, the more energy is has
 Electrons don’t lose energy in the same orbit
 Electrons fill up starting from the inside shell
 The closer an atom is to the nucleus, the more stable it is

Electron Shell Rules

 Electrons always occupy the lowest energy level first

 When energy level/shell number is n, it can hold a maximum of 2n2 of electrons
 The Outermost shell can only hold a maximum of 8 electrons
