6.0 SURFACE CLEANING

6.7 The surface to be examined and adiacent 25mm area shall be dry and free of all
dirt, grease, lint, scale, welding flux and spatter, oil, or other extraneous matter
which could interfere with mobility of magnetic particles, mask the indication or
create false indications.
6.2 Normally, as-weld condition is acceptable, unless weld surface irregularities are
present that could mask indications due to discontinuities.
6.3 Cleaning of organic compound shall be accomplished by solvent, and othcr
contaminations shall be removed by mechanical means (wire brushing or
grinding).

7.0 PREPARATION OF WET MAGNETIC PARTICLE SUSPENSION

7.1. The wet magnetic particle shall be prepared in water. Approximately 20 grarn of
particle with conditioning agents (Magna Flux make) shall be added in 1 litt:r of
water.
7.2 The concentration of magnetic particle-suspension shall be determined hy
settling volume through use of an ASTM Pear shaped centrifuge tube with 1,5 ml
stem (0.1 ml division).
/.J The concentration shall be between 7.2 to 2.4 mL per 100 mL of well-mixed
sample after settling time of at least half an hour. The concentration shall be
checked prior to use and after every eight hours of continuous use.

8.0 EXAMINATION PROCEDURE

8.1 Before the magnetic particle examination is conducted, a check of the

examination surface shall be conducted to locate any discontinuity which may
not attract and hold magnetic particles because of their width'
8.2 Longitudinal magnetic field shall be created with the help of AC Yoke. The yokc
legs shall be in fulI contact with the metal surface.
8.3 Continuous method shall be used. The yoke shall be energized after it is properly
positioned and de energized before removal.
8.4 The leg spacing shall not be less than 75 mm and more than 170mm (centre-to-
centre).
8.5 At each location, two examinations approximately perpendicular to each other
shall be carried out.
8.6 Yoke shall be placed across the welds at an angle 30-45 degree from the long axis
of the weld. Sufficient overlap shall be made to ensure 100% coverage of the area
requiring examination.
8.7 The ferromagnetic particles used as examination medium can be
either wet or dry:
8.7.1, Dry Particles: The magnetizing current shall remain "on'' while the
examination medium is being applied. Accumulations of excess clry
particles in examinations shall be removed with a light air stream from a
bulb or syringe or other source of low plessure dry air. The examinahion
current or power shall be maintained while removing the excess parli

The magnetic particle examination using clry particle shall be carriccl out
below 250 o C
8.7.2 Wet Particles: The magnetizing current shall bc Lurneci "on" aftt:r thtr
particles have been applied. Flow of particles shall stol-r w,ith thc
application of current. Wet particles may bc appliecl ciuring thc
application of magnetizing current if they are not applied dirt:ctlv to tl.rc
examination area and are allowed to flow over the examinatic)n arca ()r
are applied directly to the examination area with lor.r, vclocitics
insufficient to remove accumulated particles.
The magnetic particle examination using Wet particlc shall be. carriecl out
below 50 oC

8.8 If an indication is observed, the area shall be cleanecl ancl reexaminecl for
conformance. During reexamination, the yoke Iegs shall be placed perperl6[i,,u1,.,t
to the major direction of indication (this will givc sensitivity ancl wc c;.rr.r
determine extent of discontinuity effectively).
8.9 A minimum light intensity of 1000 Lux shall be. maintaincd cluring
examination/evaluation. This can be obtained by using 100 W lamp kept at 30 cnr
from the surface.
8.10 The light source, technique used, and light level verification is requirecl to bo
demonstrated, documented and maintained in file. Light meter shall bc
calibrated at least once a year or whenever meter has becn repairecl. If metcr l'ras
not been in use for one year or more, calibration shall be c{one before being uscc1.

9.0 EVALUATION

9.1 All indications shall be evaluated in terms of the acceptanr:e

standards of the referencing code section.
9.2 Discontinuities on or near the surface are indicated by retention
of the examination medium. However, localized surface
irregularities due to machining or grinding marks or other
surface conditions may produce false indication.
9.3 Broad areas of particle accumulation, which might mask indications from
discontinuities, are prohibited and such area shall be cleaned and re examined.

1O.O ACCEPTANCECRITERIA

10.L Any indication which has a climension greater tl-ran 1.5 mm is a rclcuttrl
inilication.
70.2 A linear indication is one having a length greater than ihrcc' times of its r.r,idth.
10.3 Arounded indication is one of circular or elliptical shape with a length cqual tcr
or less than three times of its width.
10.4 All indications shall be interpreted. All relevant inclications shall be evaluatcci for
acceptance.
10.5 For boilers & power piping the following relevant indications are unacceptable:
10.5.1 Any cracks or linear indications.
10.5.2 Rounded indications greater than 3/re in. (5mm).

with the major dimension of this area not to exceecl 6 in. (150 mm) r.t,ith
the area taken in the most unfavorable location relative to the inclications
being evaluated.
1,0.6 For Structures, the acceptance shall be as per para 6.10 of AWS D1.1 which reft rs
to Table 6.1. An indication of an imperfection may be larger than irnperfcction
that causes it. However, the size of the inclication is the basis for accoptarrt:er
/rejection.
1,0.7 The unacceptable defects shall be removed and repailecl. Prior to making r,r,clcl
repairs, the area shall be examined by suitable methocl to ensure it has Lrt:cr-r
removed or reduced to an acceptably sizecl imperfectior-r.
10.8 Any indication which is believed to be non relevant shall be regarclecl as an
imperfection unless it is shown by re examinatior-r by same method or br,, 1l1g ,rr',
of other NDE methods and/ or by surface conclitior-ring that no unacccptalrlc
imperfection is present,

11.0 RE-EXAMINATION OF REPAIR AREAS

11..1. After repairs have been made, the repaired area shall be blenclecl into the
surrounding surface so as to avoid sharp notches, crevices corners anc'l re-
examined by magnetic particle methocl ancl by all other approved methocls tl-rat
