REPORT ON SITE IN1ESTIGATION FOR THE L7VELOPMENT PLAN
UNIVERSITY COLLEGE, .CORKS AT DONOVAN'S ROAD, CORK.,

This report describes the results of a site investigation ' Introduction

carried out by Orrje & Co., Soil Mechanics Division, for
De Leuw, Chadwick, 0 hEocha, Consulting Engineers for
University College) Cork.

The purpose of the investigation was to find out the

nature of the soil strata, and locate rock if possible,
in a small area not covered by previous investigations.

The site is near the gate to the College at the corner The Site
of Western Road and Donovan's Road and is defined by
De Leuw, Chadwick, 0 hEocha drawing "Location of Extra

Boreholes (16A, 16B) - Donovan's Road Site". The ground

surface is developed as parkland, having both steep
slopes and flat areas beside the road through the site.

Site works began on 14th June; 1972, and were completed Operation
on 20th June, 1972.

Pneumatic drilling was carried out in both boreholes to

show continuity of heavy strata. Sampling and Standard
Penetration Tests were carried out in borehole No. 16B.
Location of boreholes is given in Drawing No.1 which is P07Atiqq1711
LewAl.i.ng
"?.

based on De Leuw, Chadwick, 0 hEocha Drawing "Location

of Extra Boreholes (16A, 168) - Donovan's Road Site",
which also gave surface elevations of boreholes which
refer to Ordnance Datum.

Results of the investigation are shown in the attached Recording

Appendices and Drawings (Job No. 67.0907-02).

Appendix A : Methods of Operation

Appendix B : Borehole designations (sheets 1 to 3)
Drawing No.1 : Borehole Plan
Drawing No.2 : Borehole Sections.

A thin, easily penetrated layer of silt overlies heavier Soil Strata

granular material, which varies from fine sand to boulders.
Rock was found in borehole No.16A. In borehole 16A, the
granular material starts at 4.8 m below ground level and
is continuous to rock at 26.0 m below ground level. The
rock is probably grey dolomite and was found to be hard
0 and consistent.

In borehole 16B, the granular material starts at 2.8 m

below ground level, where sand and gravel layers were
easily drilled, and gave Standard Penetration Test values
of N = 19 to N = 54. This material is consistent in
drilling pattern down to 12.8 m below ground level where
a boulder starts the heavier material, mainly boulder and
gravel, which was medium to hard to penetrate. Standard
Penetration Test values in the lighter parts of this
material were N = 45 and N = 47.
A water sample, taken at 1.3 m below ground surface in Soil Strata
/Continued
borehole No.163 from a standing water level, was tested
for Sulphate content and showed to have 20 parts per
1C0,000 of S03.

All granular material in the samples is rounded and

suggests that the soil is a deposit, probably both by'

ice and water. All the material drilled was well

compacted.

The granular material will be adequate for most founda- Conclusions

tions, though maximum bearing pressure would vary

according to the different levels in this material.

It is recommended that the Standard Penetration Test

value of N = 25 be taken as safe average for the sand and

gravel as shown in borehole 163: this would permit up to

3 tons/sq.ft. for bearing pressure. For the gravel and

boulder layers this figure would be up to 5 tons/sq.ft.
for Standard Penetration Test value of N = 45.

The proximity of a standing water level to ground surface

(found in borehole 16B) suggests that note must be taken
of this when designing foundations for this lower flat

C area. The result of the Sulphate test on the water sample

taken shows that the're would be no danger of Sulphate
attack on concrete.

DE3 CR I PT ION OF IDN7.1UMAT IC T.-)RI ILI IT; METHOD

The drilling is carried out with a compressed air operated rock drilling
machine. The drill rods are generally composed of 8 ft. lengths capable
of being joined together, and fitted to a 2" or 2? rock drill bit.
Compressed air or pressurized water is used for flushing the borehole.
For the purpose of being able to obtain a relative comparison between
the results of the various boreholes, the air pressure supply to rock
drill, motor feed and flushing is kept constant during drilling operations
and checked by means of pressure gauges. The time required for the drill
to penetrate 12" of soil or rock is recorded to form the basis for a
diagram.

An experienced borer is well able to determine roughly the type of loose

soil layers, the density of the rock, as well as the existence or prevalence
of larger fissures. Horizontal cracks may well be observed, but will not
appear in the diagram, although their existence will be duly recorded by
the borer.

Compared with ordinary penetrative drilling methods the great advantage

of the method described is the ease with which it is possible to bore

through large blocks or boulders and thus reach down to bedrock.

It is normally considered sufficient to drill about 10 ft. into bedrock

for accurate determination of the bedrock level, but boring further into
the rock may be necessary also for determination of its quality. In many

cases the crushed rock material from the borehole can be collected and
the type of rock roughly determined by examination.

This is a method of measuring the resistance to drilling; for a detailed

study of engineering properties sampling is necessary.

ORRJE & CO. DUBLIN

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF SAMPLING

. WITH EXLER EQUIPMENT

The same equipment as for Pneumatic Drilling is used,

supplemented by an eccentric cutter and 5e o.d. Exler
casing.

When drilling is commenced the cutter is thrown out to

cut a hole slightly bigger than the casing. Casing is
driven to approximately the desired level, the drill
bit is withdrawn and the casing is forced to the bottom
of the hole. Compressed air is put into the casing from
the pump by hosing from the compressor, thus blowing the
hole clear. The Sampler is lowered into the borehole by
the machine without vibration and the use of the sliding
hammer where possible, to obtain 2 ft. penetration. The
sampler is removed, using the machine and mechanical jack
which give a steady lifting force. The sample is retained
in the sample tube, the drive head adaptor and shoe being
removed. The sample is then sealed with wax and a lid

applied. The number of the tube is stamped into the metal

of the tube.

The cutting bits can he selected to give different sample

tube internal diameter clearances between 0% and 3%.

DEVELOPMENT PLAN FOR UPIVIMITY COLLEGE CORK

SOIL INVESTIGATION

AUTHORITY:

On the instructions of Murray, hurray, Pettit and Partners,

Consulting Engineers, Cork, a soil investigation was carried out in and

around University College, Cork.

SCOPE:

The investigation was to include the sinking of boreholes, the

taking of soil, rock and ground water samples, the carrying out of

in situ and laboratory soil mechanics tests and the preparation of a

factual report showing on the borehole logs the strata encountered and

giving the results of the tests carried out.

FIELD WORK:

Twenty one boreholes were sunk at the positions ,clown on the plan.

The boroholes were started using 204 um. casing and tools by shell and

auger type soils boring rigs. The boreholes were taken by this method

to a depth at which it was thought that rock was encountered or when

further penetration was not practical. The boreholes were then continued

by means of a rotary diamond drill using 66 mm. equipment.

In the soils boring disturbed jar samples were obtained at each

change of stratum and at intervals within a relatively thick stratum.

Representative bulk samples were also obtained.

Whore possible, undisturbed samples representative of the more

cohesive soils were obtained. Standard or cone penetration tests were

carried out in the granular soils encountered.

Mere ground water was struck. its level was noted as were any

changers in its level during the boring o:2eratiolls. Samples of ground water

wore obtained.
-
The borehole logs show the strata encountered, the samples taken,

the results of insitu tests and the ground water levels.

LABORATORY WOW:

On the receipt of the disturbed jar samples at the laboratory, the

samples were accurately described and whore applicable the moisture

contents were determined. These moisture contents are given on the

appropriate borehole logs.

Undrained triaxial compression tests were carried out on sets of

three 1 inch diameter by 3 inch long samples cut from representative

undisturbed samples. The cell pressures used were 5, 15 and 30 lbs per

square inch. Consolidation tests were also carried out on samples cut

from representative undisturbed samples at equivalent loadings of 1, -L,

1, 2 and 4 tons per square foot. The data obtained from the triaxial

and consolidation tests is given on the test summary sheets.

The samples of ground water obtained from the boreholes were

analysed with the following results:-

DISCUSSION:

The area is underlain by carboniferous limestone which was found

in the boreholes at depths varying from 1.1 metres in borehole 8 to

15.8 metres at borehole 16, though borehole 10 was taken to a depth of

19.8 metres without encountering rock.

The carboniferous limestone varied in structure from solid with

core recoveries of 95,6 to shattered and weathered with core recoveries

of 15/0.

The rock was generally overlain by compact sandy well graded gravel

containing cobbles and boulders. Uhere the gravel was absent, the

rock was overlain by silty fine sand containing a little gravel.. This

silty fine sand also overlay the gravel where it overlay the rock.

Ground water levels varied considerably and in some cases none

was encountered.

The gravel is compact and with a high water table would have an

allowable bearing capacity of 1.0 tons per sruare foot, using the criteria

of maximum settlement of 1 inch.

The silty fine sand also would have an allowable bearing capacity

of the order of 1.0 tons por square foot but with some settlement which

would be dependent on the shape, size and loading of the foundation.

no special precautions need be taken to protect buried concrete

from chemical attack.

Proposed New Plmics & Chemistry 2.13

At University College, Cork.

Foundation Conditions

Dear Mr. Boyd Barrett,

In accordance with your instructions, Me.:,!irti. j.L.

have executed borings and trial pits to determine rock ;ovals at var:
points on the site for the proposed Physics & Chemistry Liiuilding.
present time we have not received complete boring laiv. but we have
sufficient information to advise you on the foundations.
The drawing which accompanies shows the
this report
location of the various bore holes and trial pits and the approximate
position of the New Building. It appears that the rock is at a depth oi
approximately 10 ft. over most of the site. It is somewiu shellac:
the south end of the proposed building. The rock falls away fairly r:-
but irregularly, in the vicinity of the north end of the building. It is
0 approximately 7 ft. at the north-east corner and appro
the north-west corner and on the centre line of the butt tt,,,;.
4C; ::':

The rock has been proved in all trial holes. In the t;

the operatives were certain that they had hit rock in ail caeca. L:

been proved positively with a core drill but we are satisfied that %Lev
either on rock or very close to it, as the depths agree closely with t,
positions and levels of the rock outcrops which can be seen in the pat:-
surrounding the north end of the site.

The only point at which an unusual rock level was

encountered is at trial hole D where rock is ..71f t. below the surface.
This was the last hole to be completed and we have asked the Contract,
to carry out a few more holes in this area to find out whether deep roc
is over a large area, or as we suepect, that this is an isolated hole.
There is little doubt that the top surface of the rock will be extremely
irregular. There was a fair area exposed in the shallow hole at F sane
it was quite obvious that we did hit the top of a spur of rock.
A Building of the type proposed will present no foundation
problem. The proposed half basement is an advantage in that we will
be able to see the nature and quality of the rock for our pier foundation:
We consider that it would be preferable not to fix the level of the baser-
floor finally until the rock has been exposed over a fairly large area.
Even for the moderate loading of the basement floor it would be undesirz
to have part resting on solid rock and part on filling. It would be
preferable either (a) to trim the high points of the rock soil construct tl.
basement floor at a level which allowed say 9" of filling 'eetween it and
the rock or (b) to trim the high spots of the rock and to fill the hollow
with say lean concrete.
Whichever alternative is adopted over the t:;eneral area of
the basement. it should be accepted in principle that the foundations to t

columns will be taken to solid rock in the form of piers. These piers vi.
be little deeper if alternative (a) is adopted but will still: be quite shalt,
except for a small area in the north-west corner.
The extent of rock trimming which will be necessary is
impossible to predict but in the opinion of the writer it will be considerabl
In our opinion the question of a separate contract for
excavation and rock trimming should be given serious consideration. V, e
are not aware of the precise programme of the building at this stage but if
is hoped to begin building operations towards the end of this year or early
in 1965, the preliminary stages of the work would be greatly speeded up
if the excavation were done during this Summer. There is no doubt that
large scale excavation work is much more readily handled in dry weather
and while theoretically letting works in separate contracts generally leads
to some increase in cost, we feel in this case that more favourable rates
might be obtained if the excavation is undertaken during dry weather.
If this course is adopted it would probably be necessary to
construct either portion of the permanent surface water drtinc.1,;e system c

alternatively to provide temporary drainage.for the excavated area. V c

REPORT ON SITE INVESTIGATION AT UNIVERSITY COLLEGE,CORK.

4= mr.
dom... r
INTRODUCTION: 61.

It Is proposed to construct a retaining wall to contain the present embankment

of the river near the Main Entrance to University College.
A site investigation consisting of two boreholes was carried out at the request to
Mr. M. Walsh B. E., Consulting Engineer, on behalf of the University authorities between
22nd. January 1970 and ith. February 1970.
The purpose of the investigation was to provide information on the sub-soil conditions
;;levant to the design of the proposed structure.

THE SITE:

The site is located at the Main Entrance to University College.

SITE WORK:

Two boreholes were put down to depths 36'-6" and 52'-0", using shell and auger
equipment. Disturbed samples were taken at each change of stratum in order to obtain a
continuous record of the strata encountered. In the granular strata standard penetration tests
were carried out to obtain an indication of the relative density of the material.

SUB-SOIL CONDITIONS AND FIELD TESTS:

0 The logs of the borings giving detailed descriptions of the strata encountered are given
at the end of this report.
The borings indicate the site to be covered by a layer of back-fill, underlain by a
brown silt and a layer of sand and gravel.
Groundwater was observed in both boreholes, in both cases at 10' depth.
Standard in-situ penetration tests were made whilst boring the predominantly granular
materials. The number of blows "N" required to drive the penetration tool a distance of one
foot varied within the range 29 blows per foot to 73 blows per foot indicating that where such
soils are encountered they may be considered to be in a medium dense to very dense state of
compaction.

DISCUSSION:

The logs of the boreholes, given at the end of this report, show that immediately
underlying the made-ground on the South side of the entrance roadway is a thick stratum of silt.
Foundations for the retaining wall should not be placed in this material. Therefore any retaining
wall should be stabilised either by deep penetration into the lo. errand/ stratum or by tying
bock to an anchor wall.
over /-
- 2

Economics will dictate the type more suitable to the conditions.

On the North side of the river, the borelogs indicate that a
mediu, uonse sand and gravel stratum is underlying the made.ground. Therefore

a flexible type retaining wall penetrating the sand/gravel strata or a gravity type
retaining wall is appropriate.
It difficult to estimate the physical characteristics of the made
is

ground as these vary with degree ofcompaction etc., but it would be inadvisable
to place any foundations in this material.
