INTRODUCTION
 PREFACE

Geotechnical Investigation for the Project “CONSTRUCTION OF PROPOSED ESR TANK AT BADILO
OF IBRISINGH GP UNDER TRITOL BLOCK IN THE DISTRICT OF JAGATSINGHPUR.” has awarded
by “LARSEN & TOUBRO CONSTRUCTION” to DUDOS ENGINEERING PVT.LTD. for a thorough
assessment of sub-soil strata at different location in order to facilitate the design of foundation of the
proposed structure.

OBJECTIVE OF SUB SOIL INVESTIGATION

Sub-Soil investigation gives brief description of subsoil strata for designing the foundation of any civil
engineering structure. Sub-soil exploration is essentially required to know about the order of
occurrence of soil and rock strata, Ground water table, to find the bearing capacity, Compressive
Strength, Physical properties of soil & rock, Settlement criteria etc.

 SCOPE OF WORK

The Scope of Work Includes the Following:-

 Drilling of 2 No. boreholes at the proposed borehole location as per the direction of the client.
 Collection of soil and rock samples and carrying out the relevant laboratory tests on soil and rock
samples.
 Conducting Standard Penetration Test (SPT) within the borehole at every 1.5 m interval or as
required.
 Preparation of geotechnical investigation report.
SECTION-B

 DETAILS OF FIELD INVESTIGATION

Boring / Drilling
It is the main part of sub soil investigation work as the soil/rock samples were collected for different tests at
different levels. The sub-soil exploration work at the proposed site was carried out mechanically using 150
mm diameter power operated shell and auger equipment with provision of the casing of internal diameter 150
mm in soft strata and power operated Mechanical boring in hard strata using diamond cutter as per IS : 1892
– 1979 and as per the instruction of authority.
Standard Penitration Test (SPT)

Standard penetration tests (SPT) was conducted at regular intervals and the samples were brought to the
laboratory with proper identification and labeling. Standard split spoon sampler was used for conducting
Standard Penetration Test. The number of blows required to drive the sampler for the 1st, 2nd & 3rd 15cm
depths were recorded. The total number of blows required to drive the split spoon sampler due to the free fall
of a 63.5kg hammer through a distance of 75 cm for the 2nd and 3rd 15cm penetration were taken together
as the field ‘N’ value or the standard penetration test (resistance) of the soil. After the penetration to full
depth, the sampler was carefully pulled out. The cutting shoe and the head were removed. The samples
were carefully collected & transported to laboratory for testing purpose. The field ‘N’ values recorded at
various depths have been reported in the summarized data sheets.

Collection of Soil and Rock samples

UDS sample were collected by thin seamless tube and the tube was properly sealed by wax at both the
ends. Then UDS samples were transported to laboratory with proper labeling & identification marks for
testing purposes.
From SPT test, Soil samples were collected from split spoon sampler for Laboratory test.
Sufficient quantity of disturb samples were collected from boreholes for different tests.
From the rock strata, rock cores were also collected and brought to the laboratory with proper labeling for
different test.

Determination of TCR and RQD

TCR: Rock core samples are kept in the same order as recovered from the bore hole run wise (marked arrow
on cores in the increasing order of depth). The length of all the core samples is measured. Core recovery is
the ratio of the sum of the lengths of all the cores recovered from drilling per run.
TCR (%) = (Total length of core pieces recovered/Length of run (1.5m)) X 100
RQD: Rock Quality Designation indicates the quality of the rock. RQD is defined as the ratio of the sum of
the total length of the cores of length 10cm or longer recovered from a core run.
RQD (%) = (Total length of cores in pieces of 10cm length or longer/length of the run (1.5m)) X 100
Sampling and Labeling
Representative soil or Rock samples were collected from the borehole. The samples were sealed in
polythene bags or core box and labeled properly by indicating the depth, location, borehole no, reference no.
etc. Sampling and labeling is done confirming to IS: 1892-1979.
Ground water table
Observation of ground water table is important since it influences the bearing capacity of soil in different
seasons. When the foundation remains submerged under water the bearing capacity is to be calculated
considering the water table correction factor. Therefore while conducting tests during dry season, it is always
necessary to enquire about the ground water table. At first the initial ground water level is recorded. For
confirmation it was again measured and recorded after 24 hours of removal of casings.

 DETAILS OF LABORATORY TEST
Grain size analysis
The grain size analysis of different soil samples were done as per the
requirement of IS: 2720 (Part-4) 1985 – method of test for soil, Grain size analysis.
The detail of the test results has been shown test result sheet separately.
The results of grain size analysis are used to classify the soil in various depths
of the boreholes

Index Proprieties
Soil consistency refers to the resistance of the soil offered against
forces that tend to deform or rupture the soil aggregate. Consistency limits
indicate the soil moisture content limits for various states of consistency.
The consistency limits include Liquid Limit (L.L.), Plastic Limit (P.L.)
The difference between the numerical values of liquid limit and plastic limit
of the soil is called the Plasticity Index (P.I.). It indicates the range of moisture
content over which the soil exhibits plasticity. L.L, P.L. & P.I. were determined
as per the procedure laid down in IS: 2720(Part-5).
The results of liquid limit and plasticity index & Plasticity index have been
reported in the summarized data sheets.

Natural Moisture Content

Moisture content of a soil sample is the ratio of the weights of water to the weight of dry soil. It is usually
expressed as a percentage. Moisture content of samples collected from boreholes were determined as per
the procedure laid down in the IS:2720(Part-2) 1973 The data has been reported in the summarized data
sheet.
Determination of Bulk density
Bulk density of the soil specimen is the weight of the soil specimen per unit volume of the mould (soil
specimen). Bulk density of the soil specimen was determined as per IS:-2720(Part-8) 1973 Results have
been presented in the summarized data sheet.

Determination of specific gravity

The specific gravity of the soil sample is the ratio of the mass of a given
volume of soil sample in air to the mass of an equal volume of water at 40 C.
Specific gravity of soil sample was determined as per the provisions of
IS: 2720(Part-3).1980 Specific gravity of soil sample obtained during the
test have been reported in the summarized data sheet.

Determination of Void ratio

The void-ratio of the soil samples has been calculated at different levels and the results are shown
separately. The result of all these tests has been annexed separately.

Deferential Free Swell index (DFS)

DFS test is conducted as per IS-2720(Pt-40)-1977.In this test the
free swell index of a soil sample is determined which helps to identify
the potential of a soil to swell. Free swelling index of soil samples
obtained during boring have been presented in the summarized test result.

Direct Shear test

The shear strength properties of soil play an important role in the
determination of the bearing capacity of soil. The value of C and 
of less cohesive soil are obtained from the Direct shear test as per
IS: 2720 (Part-13). Results of test have been reported in the summarized
data sheet and the graph has been presented separately.
Triaxial Shear test
The shear strength properties of soil play an important role in
the determination of the bearing capacity of soil. The value of C
and  are obtained from Mohr’s circle drawn as required in
IS:2720 (Part-11) for the soil samples tested in unconsolidated un-drained
tri axial compression without measurement of pore water pressure. Results
of test have been reported in the summarized data sheet and
the Mohr’s diagrams have been presented.

Chemical Analysis Of soil and water

Chemical analysis of soil and water is required to determine the pH value, chloride and sulphate content .
Excess of these values may cause damage to the concrete and steel structures. The test is conducted as per
IS-2720(Pt-26)-1987, IS-2720(Pt-27)-1977, IS-3025(Pt-11)-1983, IS-3025(Pt-24)-1986 & IS-3025(Pt-32)-
1988. Results of test have been reported in the summarized data sheet.

Unconfined Compressive Strength Test

As soon as the rock core samples were received in the laboratory, Core Recovery percentages and RQD
percentages were determined. Then core samples which were longer then the diameter that was 50mm
were selected for preparation of specific specimens as per I:S 9143-1979 in the ratio of 1:2 (Diameter :
Length) Then the specimens were tested for unconfined compressive strength as per IRC 78-2014.

Point Load Strength Test

The Point load test is conducted as per IS-8764-1998.It is an index test to determined the strength of rock
specimen by which the rock is classified according to the strength. Depending upon the size and shape of
test specimen, the point load can be conducted by different methods. The test data has been reported in the
summarized data sheet.
