PREAMBLE
GENERAL: There may be variation in stratification and characteristics of soil from those
observed at the borehole locations.
GROUND WATER: The ground water table levels indicated on the boring logs are those
appertaining to the time of the investigation. It is to be noted that ground water levels are
subject to variations by changes in local drainage and or pumping conditions, tidal fluctuations
and seasonal variations. In areas of close proximity to sea, the highest ground water level
may be taken as that corresponding to the highest tide level.
ROUTINE SAMPLING: Disturbed samples of soil are taken from standard 50mm diameter
split barrel sampler and placed in plastic bags.
Unless otherwise stated the disturbed soil samples may not be at their natural moisture
content.
STANDARD PENETRATION TEST: The standard penetration test results presented on the
boring logs have been obtained using SPT device conforming to both, British as well as
American Standards.

SECTION – I
1.1 INTRODUCTION: Upon the instruction from M/S. Mohammed Al Ojaimi Contracting
Company., in their capacity as contractor, a site investigation has been carried out at the site
for Cable Feeder Works for 220kV & 66kV Transmission Development Phase 2 near Hidd
BSP Substation, Kingdom of Bahrain.
1.1.1 OBJECT OF INVESTIGATION: The main object of the investigation was to determine
subsurface conditions at the site by determining the physical properties of the soil, to
determine the bearing capacity at suitable elevation, to observe the level of water table, to
note the depth of rock formation, if any, as well as to recommend the type of foundation to be
used.
1.1.2 SITE AND PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The site is situated in Hidd. The location of the
site is shown on the site plan in Appendix A2.
1.2 GEOLOGY OF BAHRAIN: The main Island of Bahrain essentially consists of partially
eroded dome of sedimentary deposits, which are of Eocene age and which are flanked by
formations of Pleistocene and Holocene.
HALOCENE: Gravels, silts, clays, aeolinatine, playa, deposits, cerithiid limestone etc.
GROUP FORMATION
EOCENE DAMMAM: Jabal Hisai Carbonate. West Riffa Flint, Al Buhayr Carbonate.
Deil’ Rafah Carbonate
Forminiferal Carbonate
1.3 SELECTION OF TEST LOCATION: Location of boreholes was indicated by the consultant
and the same are shown in Appendix A3.
1
1.4 METHOD OF INVESTIGATION:
1.4.1 BORING/ DRILLING: We explored subsurface soil conditions by drilling two boreholes
each of 7.0 m deep. Locations are shown on the location plan in Appendix A3. The location
and depth of the drilling were indicated by the client. We drilled the boreholes using our Rock
Drill TRD-80 drilling rig. The boreholes were advanced by mud rotary drilling. Bentonite drilling
mud was circulated to remove cuttings and to maintain the borehole stability as well as to cool
and lubricate the tools. Boring was performed using a tricone roller bit on string of 45 mm
diameter AW rods.
1.4.2 SAMPLING INTERVAL: Soil samples were obtained at approximate intervals of 0.5 m
on soil to the depth of up to 3 m and 1 m interval thereafter.
1.4.3 SAMPLING PROCEDURE: The soil was sampled by driving a standard 50 mm diameter
split-barrel sampler with a 64 kg hammer dropped from a height of 0.76 m. The procedure was
generally in accordance with the standard penetration test (SPT) procedures specified in B.S.
5930. Rock samples were obtained by core drilling and total core recovery (TCR) and rock
quality designation (RQD) was noted for general assessment of rock quality.
1.4.4 TRIAL PITS: We investigated subsurface soil conditions by excavating two numbers of
trial pits to the depth of bedrock, at the location shown on the location plan Appendix A3. The
Trial pit log is enclosed in Appendix: A6.
1.4.5 SAMPLE HANDLING: After recovery, each sample was removed from the split sampler
and visually examined and classified. Representative portions of soil samples were then
sealed, packed and transported to our laboratory for further examination and testing.
1.4.6 BORE LOGS: A record of field observations were maintained in the form of field logs,
describing the visual identification of the subsurface materials encountered at different
horizons and also other pertinent field data. These logs were later edited to incorporate
information obtained from laboratory examination and testing. The final bore logs thus
developed are presented in Appendix A1. Symbols and terms appearing on the bore logs are
described in Appendix A4 & A5.
The SPT value, presented on the bore logs, is the number of blows required to drive 50 mm
diameter split-barrel for each 0.15 m of the 0.45 m sampling length. The ‘N’ value was taken,
as the number of blows required to drive the sampler for the last 0.30 m of the 0.45 m sampling
2
length. The blows required for the first 0.15 m penetration may not be representative of the in-
situ densities due to the possible presence of loose materials or cuttings from the drilling
operation. Where very dense soil was encountered, the actual penetration for 50 blows was
noted on the bore logs after initial 0.15 m seating of the sampler. Where the sampler could not
penetrate the initial 0.15 m, we have noted on the boring logs the actual sampler penetration.
1.4.7 WATER LEVEL MEASUREMENT: We measured the water level during both high tide
and low tide in the boreholes after leaving the borehole open for at least 24 hours after
completion of drilling operation.

2.1.2 GROUND WATER TABLE: Depth of ground water was recorded 24 hours after the
completion of boring and ground water table was recorded as given below:
2.2 DISCUSSION OF LABORATORY TEST RESULTS: On the selected disturbed soil, rock
and water samples the following laboratory tests were performed to find out grain size
distribution, Atterberg limits and content of certain chemicals which could be harmful to
concrete structures.

1. Sieve analysis of soil.
2. Atterberg limits of soil.
3. Chloride, Sulphate, Carbonate and pH of soil.
2.2.1 GRAIN SIZE ANALYSIS AND ATTERBERG LIMITS: On the selected disturbed soil
samples collected during operation, sieve analysis and Atterberg limit tests have been
performed. Based on the results, the soil types have been classified as summarized in
Appendix B1 and B2.
2.2.2 CHLORIDES & SULPHATES IN SOIL & WATER: The chemical test results of soil and
water is summarized in Appendix B3.
