Geotechnical Investigation Report for Proposed structure of Bhojanalay at Ambaji

Introduction
The report is presented herewith analyses based on thorough study of the geotechnical
investigation results.

A complete geotechnical investigation was undertaken by us to obtain the required subsurface

information to study and to indicate the nature and behavior of soil/rock under the application of
load of Proposed structure of Bhojanalay at Ambaji.
For foundation analysis of the structure on the site, it is necessary to determine the soil/rock
profile of the site and to know physical properties and strength characteristics of soil/rock at
various depths. For this purpose, the owner of structure entrusted the geotechnical investigation
to us.
The following points were decided.
1. Exploratory bore hole – 5 Nos.
2. Standard penetration tests at different interval.
3. Collection of disturbed samples and undisturbed samples at different interval.
4. To find physical properties and strength characteristics of undisturbed and disturbed
samples.
5. To locate ground water table, if any.
6. Interpretation of results, Analysis and Recommendations.
Based on the above points the detailed Geotechnical Investigation Program included the
following:
(A) Field Investigation
1. Drilling of exploratory bore hole.
2. Collection of soil/rock samples ( Disturbed and Undisturbed )
3. Conducting Standard Penetration Test.
(B) Laboratory Investigation
1. Bulk Density and moisture content
2. Grain size analysis
3. Index properties
4. Shear tests (Triaxial shear test)
5. Consolidation tests
6. Uniaxial Compressive Test
7. Point load Index
(C) Recommendations
Based on above investigations, the results are to be obtained. The findings would be based on
interpretation of Results, Analysis and computations as per relevant Indian standards.

2.0 Field Investigation

2.1 Boring
The exploratory boreholes were drilled by rotary drilling method with mud circulation. The
locations of boreholes were dictated by client. The boreholes were done of NX size. The depth
of the test bore at the proposed location is as under:
Bore Hole No. Location of Bore Hole Depth Investigated (m)
BH-01 10.0
BH-02 10.0
BH-03 As given in location plan, fig no.1 10.0
BH-04 10.0
BH-05 10.0
2.2 Sampling
2.2.1 Disturbed samples
Disturbed samples were collected during boring and from split spoon samplers in SPT. The
samples recovered were logged, labeled and placed in polyethylene bags and sent to laboratory
for testing.
2.2.2 Undisturbed samples
Undisturbed soil samples were collected in thin walled Shelby tubes as per IS 2132 only where
soil is encountered. The samples thus collected were sealed with wax, labeled and transported
with utmost care. In rocky stratum, undisturbed samples were collected in rock core form.
Sampling was carried out to get continuous samples. The rock core samples from different
depths were numbered chronologically and marked with direction of drilling and were stored in
core boxes. All this samples were labeled and transported to our laboratory at Gota, Ahmedabad
for testing at the earliest.
2.2.3 Standard penetration test
The standard penetration tests is conducted in accordance with IS:2131-1981. The test results
show, N – Value, the blow counts of last 30 cm penetration of split spoon sampler with 63.5 kg
hammer falling from 76 cm height. This test is the most appropriate in sandy soils. In clays the
same indicates the consistency. While SPT is one of the important tests in soils, in rock the same
is not of much significance as the N values are more than 100 i.e. refusal.

2.5 Rock Quality designation

From the cores samples recovered, % core recovery and Rock quality designation RQD were
determined on cores having length more than 10cm. Based on the RQD; the rock can be
classified from stand point of spacing of discontinuities.
RQD (%) Rock Classification
100-90 Very good
90-75 Good
75-50 Medium
50-25 Poor
25-0 Very poor

5.0 General stratification

From existing ground level to 7.50m depth, blackish, fine to medium grained, filled up clayey
sand with debris is found, followed by discontinuous framework of highly weathered, weak,
completely fractured and disintegrated, grayish black, interlocking fragments of rock with
infilled clayey sand upto the depth of investigation.

6.0 Computation of Safe Bearing Capacity

Shallow foundation may not be feasible considering deep deposited heterogeneous filled up
Soils mixed with debris. Based on the stratification, properties of sub soil and the type of
structure planned, end bearing bored cast in situ piles are recommended.

Page no.3 of 20
ST/14/12/7056

7.0 Conclusions
1. General stratifications are as described in 5.0 and as shown in respective bore logs.
2. For the proposed structure END bearing capacity is recommended. Pile shall be
terminated after socketing as suggested in table in design parameters or till the required
set is obtained in pile termination criteria, whichever is more. Initial and routine pile
load test is required to verify the actual carrying capacity of pile both in compression
and lateral loads. Termination criteria as suggested above does not substitute the load
test requirements. Initial and routine pile load tests shall be carried out on the piles at
site as per IS: 2911 Part 4. For design and construction, specification of IS: 2911 (Part
I/Sec 2), 2010, IS: 456, 2000 and notification 54 of Indian Highways, June 2009 shall
strictly be followed.
3. The excavated soil can not be used in the foundation trenches, in plinth of the structure
and in sub base of pavements. Fill material suitability should be determined by the
testing. Materials for filling shall not contain rocks or hard lumps greater than 75 mm in
maximum dimension and should have at least 80 percent passing the 9.5mm sieve and at
least 5 percent passing the 0.075 mm sieve. The fill materials should be free of organics,
debris, or other deleterious materials. Any imported materials shall have water-soluble
sulfate and chloride contents that are less than 1000 parts per million and 500 parts per
million, respectively, pH greater than 7.0 and Expansion Index less than 20. Back filling
shall be done in layers with compacted thickness not exceeding 300 mm. The
excavation may remain vertical for shorter duration during construction therefore it is
desirable to keep the side slope in excavation to be atleast 1V:0.5H and with berms of
about 1m width at vertical spacing not exceeding 3m for deep excavations.
4. Ground water table was not encountered upto 10.0m depth during investigation.
5. We have prepared this report for the exclusive use of clients and as per the scope and
specification instructed by them verbally or in writing. No other use is anticipated or
authorized by clients. The report shall be used only by the client for the project and
purposes described herein at the locations shown by him and explored by us. The
finding and recommendations are valid when the onsite and offsite conditions affecting
the structures n project are not changed due to the actions of man or nature. Professional
judgments presented in this report are based on evaluations of the technical information
gathered, understanding of the proposed construction, and general experience in the
geotechnical field. We have performed according to generally accepted geotechnical
engineering practices followed in the project area at the time the services were provided.
No warranty is expressed or implied. The report is issued with the understanding that
the owner and client choose the risk they decide to incur by the expenditures involved in
the engineering and construction. The findings and recommendations presented in this
report are based upon soil conditions inferred from site explorations, interpolation of the
soil conditions between exploration locations, and extrapolation of these conditions
throughout the proposed site area. The extent of investigation as well as specific
exploration locations were dictated by the clients. The findings and recommendations
are further based on the assumption that the subsurface conditions do not deviate
appreciably from those reported and those assumed. The potential for encountering
conditions different from those assumed can never be discounted. If different
subsurface conditions are encountered if any, must be brought to our attention before
execution & in a timely manner so that the need for revised recommendations can be
evaluated. In the event of changes in design loads or structural characteristics or in
location of the structure, clients should review its design based on our recommendation
and their applicability to the revision he made in a timely manner.

Appendix 1
Calculation of Safe Load on End Bearing Pile

1.0 Introduction
Shallow foundation may not be feasible considering deep deposited heterogeneous filled up Soils mixed
with debris. Based on the stratification, properties of sub soil and the type of structure planned, end
bearing bored cast in situ piles are recommended. General stratification at the location of boreholes show
primarily two layers,
1. First layer generally up to average 7.5 m comprise of filled up, highly heterogeneous mixture of
fractured and weak rock with infilled soft material i.e. clayey and loose sandy soils.
2. The layer below and extending up to 10 m comprises of boulderous formation of moderately strong,
cobbles and boulders with infilled, sandy soils. Sound rock is not encountered.
In situations where RQD shows highly fragmented strata (As in present site situation), the approach
described in IS: 2911 (Part 1 / Sec 2), 2010 (Cole and Stroud’s approach) may be followed. Following
data considered,
2.0 Design Parameters
1. Socket length of 2 times the diameter may be adequate in rocky stratum as provided in various
standards. Though, we have considered approximate 7m depth of embedment from stand point of that
required to resist expected lateral moment.
2. Based on breakability and strength as described in fig no. 3 of IS: 2911 part 1/sec 2, 2010, SPT N
Value may be taken as 100. Average Shear strength qc corresponding to assumed SPT of 100 may be
taken as 600 kN/m2 (Ref: fig 3 of IS:2911 part 1/sec2, 2010)
3. Average Shear Strength in friction along the socket length may be considered as 0.225 sqrt (qc) =
5.51 kN/m2 (Notification 54 of IRC)
3.0 Safe Load on Pile in Compression
Allowable Capacity of pile embedded into rock
Qa = Re + Rsf
Where, Re = End bearing component = Cu1 Nc πB2/4Fs,
Cu1 = Shear strength below base of pile = 600 kN/m2
B = diameter of the pile = d
Fs = Factor of Safety = 3
Nc = 9 (IS 2911 P1/S2, 2010)
Therefore Re = 1413.72 d2
Rsf = Skin friction component of socketed length of pile = αCu2 πBL / Fs
α = 0.9 (recommended value in IS 2911 P1/S2, 2010)
L = length of the socket into sound rock = 2B
Cu2 = Average Shear Strength along the socket length = 5.51 kN / m2
Therefore Rsf = 36.35 d2

Thus, Qa = 1413.73 d2 + 36.35 d2 = 1419.24 d2

Substituting the values of various diameters, allowable load on single pile would be as follows,

Allowable load in Compression with 7m socketing

Pile Diameter in m 0.5 0.7 0.9 1.0 1.2
Socketing in m 7.0 7.0 7.0 7.0 7.0
End bearing component in kN 353.4 692.7 1145.1 1413.7 2035.8
Friction component in kN 9.1 17.8 29.4 36.4 52.3
Allowable load in kN 362.5 710.5 1174.6 1450.1 2088.1
Allowable load in T 36 71 117 145 209

Page no.5 of 20
ST/14/12/7056

4.0 Check for Adequacy of Socketing Length

Depending on actual lateral load and the moment at the top of socket, if needed, the socket length shall be
varied using following relationship to get,
Socket length based on lateral load and moment = 2H/σ1 D + sqrt((4H2/σ12D2)+(6M/σ1D))
Where,
Ls = Socket Length
σ1 = Permissible compressive strength in rock = lesser of 3 MPa or 0.33 qc
H = Horizontal force at top of the socket
M = Moment at the top of the socket
D = Diameter of the pile
Note: - A check shall have to be done for the adequacy of socket length depending on the lateral load and
moments.
5.0 Pile Termination Criteria at Site
It is important that site engineers terminate the piles in right stratum. For establishing the similarity of sub
soil strata actually met while advancing the pile bore and the strata selected for terminating the pile on the
basis of N values, equivalent energy method can be used. The concept of Pile Penetration Ratio (PPR) is
used in this method. The PPR reflects the energy in T-m required to advance the pile bore of one sq.meter
cross sectional area by 1 cm. By comparing the energy spent on the SPT N Value and that in advancing
the pile bore shall be equated to get the required set criteria.
Note: - Pile shall be terminated at level equal to socket length as suggested into rock or where PPR
calculated by following relation is more than 149.4 tm/m2/cm or as length suggested in table of design
parameters (point 2) whichever is greater.
Calculation of PPR shall be done using expression W h n / A P
Where, W = Weight of the chisel in MT
H = Fall of Chisel in m
n = Number of blows
A = Area of pile in m2
P = Penetration in cm
6.0 Notes: -
1. Pile shall be terminated after socketing as suggested in table in design parameters or till the required
set is obtained in pile termination criteria, whichever is more.
2. Initial and routine pile load test is required to verify the actual carrying capacity of pile both in
compression and lateral loads. Termination criteria as suggested above does not substitute the load
test requirements. Initial and routine pile load tests shall be carried out on the piles at site as per IS:
2911 Part 4.
3. For design and construction, specification of IS: 2911 (Part I/Sec 2), 2010, IS: 456, 2000 and
notification 54 of Indian Highways, June 2009 shall strictly be followed.
