1.0 FIELD WORK AND LOCATION
The field work comprised of in-situ sampling and testing of two (02) test bore holes
which were drilled to a size of 03 inch up to a depth of 15ft and 25ft, Disturbed and undisturbed
samples were collected packed, labeled and transported to the PES laboratory for testing. The
site is located at District orakzai, the site location plan is shown below.

Report No. PES-262 2

1.1 Field Testing;
Standard Penetration Test: (ASTM D1586)
As per ASTM 1586-54, Standard penetration test was carried out on site in each Test pit. The
split spoon was driven with the 140 lb hammer falling from 30 in height and the number of
blows were counted, applied in each increment until the full penetration of 18 in (450 mm) was
achieved. The procedure was repeated after every 5 ft (1.5 m) due to homogeneous strata, or
even at every stratum change. Number of blows for each 6 in (150 mm) penetration was
recorded. The blows for the last 300 mm of penetration (12 in) were added to compute the
penetration resistance N. Details are shown in the borehole log. Number of blows were later
corrected for 70% efficiency for a hand operated US Donut hammer, for the computation of
bearing capacity.

Report No. PES-262 3

2.0 LABORATORY TESTING
The samples collected during from site, were later used for soil classification and other
laboratory strength tests.
The soil samples collected from site were tested in the laboratory to determine different physical
and engineering properties of each sample. Moisture content, Atterberg’s limit (liquid limit and
plastic limit), Sieve Analysis, and direct shear tests were performed in accordance with ASTM
specifications described for each test.
i. Determination of Moisture content & Bulk Density.
ii. Particle’s size distribution by sieving

iii. Unconfined compression Test

2.1 Moisture Content & Bulk Density

To determine the moisture content of soils, the soil sample was dried at a temperature of
105°C to 110°C for about 24 hours. The loss in weight of the soil sample represented the weight
of moisture in the soil. The moisture content of the soil to the dry weight of soil in percentage is
the moisture content of the testing soil. This test was performed in accordance with BS 1377:
Part 2: 1990.
The bulk density of a soil, i.e. the mass per unit volume of the soil deposit including any water it
contains was determined at the laboratory by using the linear measurement method approached
by BS 1377: Part 2: 1990.

2.2 Atterberg’s Limits: (ASTM D4318-10)

Following ASTM D4318-10, the liquid limit and plastic limit of required sample that is
cohesive in nature, was computed. The Atterberg’s limits refer to arbitrarily defined boundaries
between the liquid and plastic states (ie, liquid limit, WL) and between the plastic and brittle
states (ie, plastic limit, WP), of fine grained soils. They are expressed in percentage water
content. The range of water contents over which a soil behaves plastically is termed the Plastic

Report No. PES-262 4

Index and corresponds to the numerical difference between the liquid and plastic limit (ie,
WrWP).
The liquid limit (LL) is arbitrarily known as the water content, in percent, at which a part of soil
in a standard cup and cut by a groove of standard dimensions will flow together at the base of the
groove for a distance of 13 mm (1/2 in.) when subjected to 25 shocks from the cup being
dropped 10 mm in a standard liquid limit apparatus operated at a rate of two shocks per second.
The typical cassagrande’s apparatus was used in determination of Liquid Limit.
The plastic limit (PL) is the water content, in percent, at which a soil can no longer be deformed
by rolling into 3.2 mm (1/8 in.) diameter threads without crumbling.

2.3 Partical Size Distribution: (ASTM E11-09e1)

Particle size distribution was determined by means of sieving. Sieves of standard sizes
were used as per ASTM E11-09e1. The percentage of weight of the various particle sizes were
determined by sieving through a set of these standard sieves. This test was performed to
determine the percentage of different grain sizes contained within a soil sample. This test was
performed as per ASTM D422, D1140. Graphs obtained are attached in the appendices.

Report No. PES-262 5

2.4 Unconfined Compression Test (ASTM-D2166)

The unconfined compression test is usually used for measurement of an undrained strength of
cohesive soil because of the simplicity of the test technique. This test, however, is inapplicable
for such specimens as crack clay, very solid clay, and clayey soil which contains extra fraction of
sand. The unconfined compression test provides a measure of the undrained strength and stress-
strain characteristics of undisturbed, remoulded, and/or compacted cohesive soil samples.

Report No. PES-262 6

3.0 BEARING CAPACITY CALCULATION:
The bearing capacity of soil is the average contact stress between a foundation and the
soil which will cause shear failure in the soil. Allowable bearing stress is the bearing capacity
divided by a factor of safety.

3.1 Bearing Capacity from c &

Terzaghi’s equation has been used to calculate the bearing capacity.
A factor of safety of ‘3’ is used in calculation of Allowable bearing capacity.
Qu = c Nc +  D Nq + 0.4 B N (Square footing)

3.2 Bearing Capacity from SPT

Mayerhoff’s equation was used for the determination of bearing capacity from ‘N’ values
obtained from SPT and corrected. The assumed width of footing is 5.0 ft. The following formula
has been used.

( )* +

Where, K = 1 + 0.33(D / B)

Mayerhoff’s equation is based on one inch of foundation settlement.

4.0 CLASSIFICATION AND SUMMERY OF TEST RESULTS:
The system used for soil classification is Unified Soil Classification System. ASTM
2487-11 standard has been used to classify the soil. The lithology of soil consists mostly of CL,
lean clay and lean clay with gravel at higher depth

Report No. PES-262 12

equation as also given in the literature above of this report. SPT blow counts are given in

the borehole logs attached

Static ground water level was found at 11ft below the ground level

Report No. PES-262 13

6.0 CONCLUSIONS & RECOMMENDATIONS:

i. The recommended bearing capacity at depth 05 to 10ft is 0.75 TSF.

ii. It is recommended to compact the surface prior to laying of foundation

iii. It is advisable to provide a compacted filter layer of gravel/shingle of depth not less than

18 inch under foundation, gravel size should not be greater the 02inches

iv. It is emphasized that the recommended bearing capacity pertains to the depths from

existing ground level given in the Table 1.1 above.
