CHAPTER - I
1 INTRODUCTION:
1.1 In an attempt to facilitate the design of the proposed new
construction of the foundation structure of the :
MINOR BRIDGE OVER CHORA NALA AT CH. KM 4.000 IN JOLAIBARI -
BELONIA (FROM KM 0.000 TO KM 21.412) SECTION OF NH-108A IN
THE STATE OF TRIPURA
A subsoil investigation work was programmed by the authority and

for this work, the services of M/s. Ramkrishna Testing Laboratory &

Consultancy of Lake Road, Haradhan Sangha, Krishnanagar,

Agartala, Tripura (West) was sought by :

M/S. SATISH PRASAD, RANCHI

1.2 The scope of the soil investigation consisted of making three nos. of
bore holes at this site.
1.3 The formation at the site is to be reported for various layers presented

at their respective depth along with their thickness. This would also

include the subsoil properties for each stratum so as to come up with

the design parameters for designing foundations, the depth of

foundation and the selection of type of foundation. As the ground

water table location influences the bearing capacity of a foundation

and the method of construction of a foundation at the site, its location

has also to be found.

1.4 Soil samples both in disturbed and undisturbed condition wherever

possible are to be collected. These samples would be different

laboratory tests to obtain various properties of sub-soil formation.

1.5 The exploration of the sub-soil formation being limited to three nos.

bore holes it is suggested that due weighted is given to the unexplored

part of the area at the time of selecting design parameters.

2 PROJECT DETAILS
2.1 The fieldwork consisted of three nos. of bore hole at pre-determined

location. The detail of fieldwork like depth of bore hole, date of the

field work of site are presented below in tabular form

Bore Hole / Depth of Bore Date of Date of Water Table (m
Test No. Hole (m) Commencement Completion bgl)

BH - 1 30.00 10/11/2020 12/11/2020 0.40

BH - 2 25.00 19/11/2020 20/11/2020 0.30

BH - 3 25.00 21/11/2020 22/11/2020 3.70

* bgl : Below ground level

The fieldwork also included collection of disturbed and undisturbed

soil samples and conducting standard penetration tests (as per IS :

2131-1963) at regular intervals.

2.2 The investigation work was executed (as per IS:1892-1979 reaffirmed

1997). The bore holes of 150mm diameter (SX size) are initially sunk

by hand auger boring upto the water table and thereafter by rotary

boring. Undisturbed soil samples were collected (as per IS: 2132 -

1986, reaffirmed - 1997) from the bore holes and both end of the

Undisturbed Sample Tubes were waxed and lebelled properly and

send to the laboratory for testing.

Standard penetration tests were conducted in the bore hole at 1.5m

intervals as per IS:2131 in each bore hole using a split spoon sampler.

The split spoon sampler used for this test advanced by driving with a

monkey weighing 63.5 kg, falling freely through 750mm. The soil

specimens with proper identification were preserved in polythene bags

for logging purpose.

the existing ground level was observed during boring work and also

after 24 hours of the completion of the field work. Also the water

sample collected from the bore hole.

CHAPTER - IV
4 FOUNDATION DESIGN ASPECTS
A suitable foundation for any structure should have an adequate

factor of safety exceeding the bearing capacity of the supporting soils.

Also the vertical movements due to compression of the soil should be

within tolerable limit for the structure. The foundations in accordance

with the recommendations herein will satisfy these criteria.

FOUNDATION DESIGN CRITERIA

The maximum permissible total settlement and differential for the

foundation settlement is governed by the technical requirements of the

structure and is usually specified by the user for the specific

requirment.
BEARING CAPACITY OF SHALLOW FOUNDATION
(IS : 6403-1981, reaffirmed - 1997)

Bearing capacity analysis for shallow foundations has been done in

accordance with IS: 6403-1981. The following equation has been used

for the analysis.

qnet safe = 1/F(CNcScDc + p(Nq-1)SqDq + 0.5BgNgSgDgRw)
Where,
qnet safe = Safe net bearing capacity of soil based on the shear failure
criteria
C = Cohesion of clay
g = Unit weight of soil
p = Overburden pressure
B = Width of foundation
Rw = Water table correction factor
F = Factor of safety
Nc,Nq,Ng = Bearing capacity factors
Sc,Sq,Sg = Shape factors
Dc,Dq,Dg = Depth factors

All the Bearing capacity factors, Shape factors and depth factors has

been considered as IS:6403-1981, Table -1 clause - 5.1.1, 5.1.2.1 and

5.1.2.2 respectively.

SETTLEMENT ANALYSIS FOR SHALLOW FOUNDATION

(IS: 1904 - 1986, Table - 1, reaffirmed - 1995)

Settlement calculation has been done as per IS: 8009 (Part-1)-1976.

Immediate settlement considered as per clause 9.2.3.2

Si = (pB(1- ì2)I)/E

Where ì= Piosson’s ratio = 0.5 for cohesive, 0.3 for cohesionless soil.

I = Influence factor

Consolidation settlement considered as per clause 9.2.2.2

S c = Ht/(1+e0) x Cc log10 ((p0 + Dp)/p0) x loed x df x dr

Where Sc = Consolidation settlement

Ht = Thickness of the compressible layer

Cc = Co-efficient of consolidation

e0 = initial void ratio

p0 = initial overburden pressure

Dp = increase in overburden pressure

loed = Oedometer correction factor

df = depth factor

dr = Rigidity factor

CHAPTER - V
5 SOIL PROFILE & RECOMMENDATION
From the exploratory bore holes at the site it is observed that sub soil

formation at this site consists of soft cohesive formation at surface

layer and the stiffness of the soil has been increases with the

increases in depth. Details of the formations along with the “N” values

are shown in the field bore log data sheets.

Since the structure consists of a single span bridge and the scour

depth is around 4.0m, it is suggested to place the foundation

sufficiently below the depth and it is also suggested to provide a layer

of compacted layer of sand around 1.5m thick below the founding level

but at BH-3 location it is suggested to replace the soft formation upto

the depth of 9.5m with the compacted sand, and accordingly SBC has

been computed and shown below.

However, based on calculation the following bearing capacities for

open foundation are given below:

Sl. Scour Depth Depth of the Safe Bearing
No. considered as Foundation from Capacity
(m) EGL (m) (Ton/m2)
1 7.00 18.0
2 4.0 7.50 20.0
3 8.00 23.0
* Detail calculations of bearing capacities for different sizes from shear failure
consideration and calculation of settlements are shown in the subsequent pages.
