PROPOSED kano new terminal Area

BRIEF FOR GEOTECHNICAL AND MATERIALS INVESTIGATIONS

1. PROJECT INFORMATION

The proposed property of 3000sqm is located within Asokoro Extension

FCT Abuja. The foundations envisaged for the buildings will be a
combination of strip and pad footings. Based on previous assessments
conducted within the area.

It is envisaged that There will also be an extensive network of roads,

parking and hard standing areas within the proposed site layout, also
consideration for the associated storm water drainage systems.

2. SCOPE OF WORKS

The works to be carried out comprise

(a) a site investigation,

(b) prospecting of construction materials

Details of these works are given further below

3. OBJECTIVES.

3.1 Site investigation

The broad objectives of the site investigation are as follows:

 to determine the soil types, their depths, the stability of excavations and
the presence of ground water at specified locations

 to determine the geotechnical properties of the various soil layers, in

particular, in relation to the design of foundations, earthworks, roads
and pavements
 to determine safe bearing capacities of the soil for the strip footings and
pad foundations of single and double storey buildings as well as other
high rise improvements

 to determine the percolation characteristics of the soil for the design of

French drains for the septic tanks

3.2 Materials prospecting

The broad objectives of the materials prospecting are to identify sources

of suitable construction materials, borrow pits, quarries, their distances
from the proposed construction site and the quantities available.

4. GENERAL POINTS

The firm (hereinafter the Contractor) entrusted with carrying out the
investigations must have a proven track record in this type of work in the
region, with appropriately qualified personnel and adequate equipment;
in particular, the field supervisor should have the ability to decide, while
the field work is in progress, whether additional tests or test points are
required to fulfil the objectives of the site investigations.

 The work must be carried out in accordance with the appropriate British
Standards or other internationally accepted standards;

 The positions of the investigation such as Trial pits and borings will be
jointly agreed upon from designs available on any attached plan/ may be
adjusted to avoid obstructions such as trees or rock outcrops on the site,
but their actual positions must be measured by proper surveying
techniques and accurately marked on a site plan;

 Proper safety standards shall be followed at all times;

 All investigation Trial pits and borings must be backfilled as soon as

possible after logging, sampling and field testing are completed;

 Photographic records shall be made of all the trial pits.

5. FIELD WORK AND TESTS

The field work and tests listed below are not meant to be exhaustive;
the Contractor may carry out other tests that he may consider
necessary.

5.1 Trial pits – Twenty (20) trial pits are required to a depth of two metres at
the points P1 to P20.

5.2 Manual Rotary borings – Ten (10) borings should be carried inside each
trial pit for a further depth of two metres so that the soil profile is
established to a total depth of Ten (10) metres.

5.3 Standard Penetrometer Tests (SPTs)

SPTs should be carried out at points BH 1 – BH 10 to a depth of 10

metres or refusal, whichever is attained first; undisturbed and disturbed
soil samples should be taken to establish the complete soil profile and
for other tests.

5.4 Percolation tests – percolation tests should be carried out in accordance

with BS 6297: 2007, at depths of 2 metres, at points T1 – T10.

5.5 Electrical resistivity – electrical resistivity test of the soil should be

carried out near positions Where the investigation will be carried out to
determine aquifer for good source of water prior to construction phase.

6. SAMPLING

The number of soil samples to be taken from each Trial pit or boring will
depend on the variability of the strata encountered. Therefore, soil
samples will be taken in sufficient number and size to fulfil the objectives
of the investigation, in accordance with the appropriate standards. In
any case, samples should not be more than 1 metre or 1.50 metre apart
vertically.
7. LABORATORY TESTS ON SITE SAMPLES

The following laboratory tests are anticipated as a minimum:

7.1 for granular (cohesionless) soils: grading, Atterberg limits, California

Bearing Ratios (CBRs) after 96 hrs soaking, angle of friction Φ, bulk
density

7.2 for cohesive or c-Φ soils: grading, Atterberg limits, CBRs, determination
of cohesion c and angle of friction Φ, bulk density, coefficient of
compressibility

7.3 chemical analysis of soil or ground water to determine their pH values

and the chlorides and sulphates concentration

8. CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS: SOURCES AND CHARACTERISTICS

(optional)

The sources and characteristics of the following construction materials

need to be established:

Water: - for general construction: source, cleanliness.

Sand: - for concrete and plaster work: distance from the site, cleanliness
(organic test), grading, quantity available

Stone for concrete : distance of quarries from the site, grading,

Aggregate Crushing value (ACV), Flakiness Index, quantity available

Gravel for road works: distance of borrow pits from the site, grading,
Atterberg limits, compaction, CBR and swell, quantity available

Crushed Stone for road works: distance of quarries from the site,
quantity available,Los Angeles Abrasion (LAA), ACV, Sodium Sulphate
Soundness, Plasticity Index on LAA fines and Plasticity Index on material
passing 0.425mm sieve, specific gravity, bitumen affinity, sand
equivalent, compaction test (vibrating hammer method).
9. REPORTING

The report should include, amongst other things:

 A description of the geology of the area on which the proposed

development will be constructed.

 A precise Gps coordinate were the exact location of the trial

pits/borings/test points

 A scale map showing the major sources of construction materials, i.e,

borrow pits, quarries etc

 soil profiles and ground water levels in the trial pits and borings, with
SPT values where applicable

 the allowable bearing capacity of the soil at various depths where SPTs
have been requested

 the results of all the laboratory tests in summary form

 photographs of trial pits

 Any recommendations that would be useful for both the design and
construction stages of the project
