Person concepts are an essential part of nursing and healthcare policy. These concepts

focus on a patient-centric, individualized approach to care and emphasize individuals' unique

needs, values, and preferences (Karlsson & Pennbrant, 2020). Person concepts are used to

promote the delivery of safe, effective, and patient-centred care and ensure that the needs of the

individual are met (Karlsson & Pennbrant, 2020). An example of a personal concept that is

relevant to healthcare policy is dignity. Patients have the right to be treated with respect and

dignity, and nursing staff must take steps to ensure this happens. This includes ensuring that

patients are informed about their rights and how they can exercise them and providing support

when necessary.

The environment concept is essential in healthcare policy as it ensures that healthcare

providers are held accountable for their actions through professionalism (Poorchangizi et al.,

2019). For example, healthcare providers are required to follow the NMC Code of Conduct when

caring for patients, including confidentiality, honesty, and respect.

The health concept entails professional practice where nurses are responsible for

providing competent and safe care in adherence to professional standards and ethical guidelines

(Poorchangizi et al., 2019). For example, nurses must adhere to the American Nurses

Association’s Code of Ethics when advocating for policies or making decisions related to patient

care.

The nursing profession can be demonstrated through autonomy. This is the ability of

nurses to make independent decisions within their scope of practice. For example, nurses can

advocate for policies that support the safe delegation of tasks to unlicensed assistive personnel

according to their competency level (Pullen, 2021). It can also be demonstrated through
professionalism which is the commitment to provide quality care and adhere to ethical standards

(Pullen, 2021). For example, nurses may refuse to provide care contrary to the code of ethics.
