7. Determine ground properties for foundation design and geotechnical assessments.

8. Seismic analysis and determination of cavities and voids.
9. Assess the groundwater regime.

4.0 METHOD AND PROCEDURE

4.1 Drilling of Boreholes

The boreholes will be drilled within the proposed sites to specified depths; all below the
ground level inclusive SPT to determine the nature, type and properties of the subsurface soil
and/or rock, and measuring the ground water level if encountered.

4.2 Drilling Equipments

Arab Company for Laboratories and Soil is proud of the fact that the company is fully
equipped with a full range of equipment required for geotechnical investigations, soil and
construction materials testing. All available equipment at ACES is in accordance with the
British Standards (BS) and/or the American Standards (ASTM).

The sequence of drilling will be determined on site or as instructed by the client engineer.
The boreholes will be drilled by using mobile truck-mounted drilling rig. Prior to mobilization,
the rig will be suitably inspected to ensure compliance with the various safety and
environmental legislation.

4.3 Drilling Rig Mobilization

Two truck mounted drilling rigs capable to drill 10m per day per rig. The selected drilling rig
will be mobilized from ACES workshop located in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Following transit to
site, the rig has been inspected and tested prior to commencement of the work.

4.4 Drilling Method

Drilling and sampling in all types of soils/rock will be carried by using rotary method with tri-
cone roller rock bit, the drilling in soft formations will be carried-out using drag bits in place of
tri-cone. During drilling, borehole sides to be cased using steel casing or stabilized by
circulating cement slurry. In this project, the borehole diameter will be about 125mm.

On reaching the desired depth, drilling tool will be taken out from the hole and the disturbed
soil at the bottom of the hole will be bailed out.

Method Statement Rev-00 Page 2 of 9

Design & Build of On-Shore Coastal Roads

Thereafter, Standard Penetration Test (SPT) will be performed in case of granular soil and
disturbed soil sample will be collected in the sampler. In case of cohesive soil Undisturbed
Soil sampler tube is lowered to collect or undisturbed samples (UDS) as discussed in the
section below.

4.5 Sampling from Boreholes

4.5.1 Undisturbed & Disturbed Sampling of Cohesionless & Cohesive Soils

Undisturbed and disturbed samples will be obtained from the drilled boreholes
by using several sampler types such as split spoon sampler (SPT) and Shelby
tube, large bulk samples will be taken by shell or collected from the drilling fluid
return at the interval between SPTS.

Standard Penetration Tests (S.P.T.) will be performed at 1.0m interval up to 5m

and 1.5m interval down to bedrock level (if encountered) and coring thereafter in
all boreholes to obtain approximate consistencies and relative densities of the
ground materials, The test will be performed in accordance with:

• ASTM D1586.
• BS 1377: Part 9:1990, “Determination of Penetration Resistance Using
the Split-barrel Sampler (SPT)”.
Shelby tube will be used to recover undisturbed samples from soft cohesive
formation, while Triple Core Barrel sampler will be used in very stiff cohesive
strata.

Disturbed soil samples collected from SPT sampler will be classified in the field,
as per Manual Classification System, described in ASTM D-2488 and these
samples will be placed in plastic bags and sealed for laboratory analysis with
proper identification.

Undisturbed cohesive soil samples collected from Shelby tube Sampler will be
classified by Manual Classification System and the ends of the tubes will be
sealed to be airtight and to prevent from moisture loss.

Disturbed and undisturbed samples will be transported carefully to our central

laboratory located in Jeddah for laboratory analysis.

4.5.2 Undisturbed & Disturbed Sampling of Rock

Undisturbed samples will be obtained using T6-101 size double-tube core barrel
attached with standard diamond drill bits and cooled with water circulation. It will
be carried-out in continuation of Rotary Drilling in soil.
Upon reaching the rock formation, the drill bit used for soil formation will be
replaced by T6-101 size double-tube or triple tube core barrel and drilling will be
continued. (1) Where the material condition permits, core recovery of less than
90% in any drill run will not usually be acceptable for payment unless the
Engineer is satisfied that more than 90% recovery is impracticable under the
prevailing conditions. Where fractured rock or weak strata are encountered, the
Contractor shall adopt such measures as necessary to obtain cores, including
using mud or polymer flush as required. In very dense or weakly cemented
sands, the Engineer may instruct coring; in such cases,>90% core recovery is
expected.

Method Statement Rev-00 Page 3 of 9

Design & Build of On-Shore Coastal Roads

(2) When any recovery is less than 90% for a full-length drill run, the next drill
run to be reduced by 50% or a minimum of 0.5m upon the Engineers
requirement. Care will be taken to ensure that the boreholes are thoroughly
cleaned of cuttings and loose material before any testing/sampling begins.
Once the core barrel is out of the hole, lay it out on the prepared support and
remove the diamond bit. After removing the bit and core retainer, tip the head
up and placing the samples in sequence in the wooden boxes so to avoid being
displaced. The wooden boxes were particularly designed and made to have the
shape of a compartment of 1m-length and 10.5cm height, with parallel
longitudinal wooden partitions to house five meters length of continuous cores.
The wooden boxes were fixed with wooden lids to protect the samples during
transport. On each, box the number of boreholes, the sequence of samples as
they were drawn, and initial and final depths of the samples were clearly marked
and written on the box.

The core description and details of core such as total cored length, total length
of recorded sample and length of core more than 10 cm length should be
recorded on the Borehole logs.

Quality of rock is described in terms of Rock quality Designation (RQD) and

Rock Core Recovery, as given below:

Length of Recovered Core Samples

Rock Core Recovery % = ------------------------------------------------------ x 100
Total Run (150 cm)

Length of Cores with 10 cm or More

Rock Quality Designation % = ------------------------------------------------------ x 100
Total Run (150 cm

After completion of the drilling, the boreholes will be backfilled utilizing the same
materials, then clear the site, and reinstate the site as per original status.

4.5.3 Sampling, Handling and Storage for Boreholes samples

• All samples will be examined, described and labeled. Labels will include
borehole number, sample number, sample depth and date.
• All recovered samples will be kept under a shade and will at no time be
exposed to direct sunlight. Samples to be stored in a cool box.
• Disturbed samples will be kept sealed in strong plastic bags or airtight
glass containers.
• Undisturbed, disturbed and bulk samples will be dispatched to the
laboratory same day of the completion of drilling.
The examination will be carried out at ACES laboratory.
