Hoses

High Pressure Braided or hydraulic flexible hose must not be used to transfer air or
Flexible Hoses liquids under pressure exceeding 150 psi (1,000 kPa) unless it meets
the following requirements:
- the hose must be designed for the service and it must be
adequately marked to identify the rated working pressure
- except for an accumulator BOP power hose, hoses longer than
18 inches (46 cm) must be equipped with a suitable safety chain
or whipcheck safety wire at each end, to prevent whiplash when
they are disconnected. The hoses must be electrically bonded
and grounded.

Inspection Hydrocarbon and chemical hoses that are in continuous service must
be inspected and pressure-tested every 12 months. Hoses must be
marked with type of service, safe working pressure and test date.

Pre-Use Check Hoses shall be checked before use. The check should include the
following:
- connections and the required safety features such as whipcheck
safety wires/chains, and safety clips
- sleeves or clamps of the hose connectors
- the integrity of the hose

Connections All new or repaired hoses must be delivered with compressed

ferrule connections at each end. Connections must be fastened using
stainless steel sleeves, regardless of the connection materials.

Temporary Only approved hose clamps is allowed to be used for temporary

Repair repairs if necessary.
Working Pressure Prior to connecting, check the working pressure to ensure that it does
not exceed the hose design specifications.
Identification Hoses must be stamped with identification markings and
specification data on the connection sleeve.
Temporary Hoses The use of temporary hoses on process equipment within a specific
area must be approved; this must be reflected on the work permit.
Temporary hoses connected to process equipment must be
registered, signed for and logged in the control room logbook.
The logbook must be kept up-to-date.

More permanent arrangements for use of temporary hoses must be
approved in accordance with the Change Control procedure.

Hose Bleed Off In pressurized air, nitrogen, water or steam service, a T-connection
with bleed-off valve must be connected to the hoses to enable
depressurisation prior to disconnection.

After Use Hoses must be disconnected and emptied immediately after use.
They should then be cleaned and stowed.
Hoses used in hydrocarbon service must be water-flushed prior to air
blowing and stowing. However, this should not be done for
Helicopter Fuel (Jet A Fuel) hose and Diesel Fuel (supply boat-
platform) hose to avoid contamination.
Hoses used in chemical service must be cleaned in accordance with
the chemical’s MSDS prior to stowing.

Pressure Testing All hoses must be pressure tested to 1.5 times the working pressure
except for hose mounted on hose reels at utility stations. Pressure
testing of complete hose must be performed in accordance with the
supplier’s recommended procedure.

Before Stowing All hoses that are pressure tested with water (i.e. hoses for air,
nitrogen, other) must be drained and air-blown completely dry.
Hoses delivered without dust caps or plugs must be blinded at each
end prior to stowing.
