CLASS 150 LUG-TYPE BUTTERFLY VALVE FOR HIGH-TEMPERATURE SERVICE

(250°F TO 450°F) (121°C TO 232°C)

Note: For control valves, use separate data sheet for control performance requirements.
For manual valves, provide actuators per this V-spec.

1.0 GENERAL

Applicable document, latest rev. – API 609

Style – Lug type (drilled and tapped)

Connection – Compatible with ASME B16.5, Class 150 flanges for

NPS 24 and smaller valves or MSS SP-44, Class 150
flanges for NPS 30 and larger valves

Pressure-temperature rating – 285 psig (1970 KPag) @ minus 20°F to +100°F

(minus 29°C to +38°C)
185 psig (1280 KPag) @ 450°F (232°C)

Maximum operating temperature – 450°F (232°C)

Fluid service – Air (wet or dry), nitrogen, argon, dry carbon dioxide,
ammonia

2.0 CONSTRUCTION

Valve shall be leak tight through full pressure-temperature rating of 285 psig (1970 KPag)
@ 100°F (38°C), 185 psig (1280 KPag) @ 450°F (232°C).

Valve shall be designed for bi-directional dead-end service (i.e., the capability for either
side of the valve to be pressurized to the maximum rated pressure while the pipe flange on the
opposite side is removed).

Neck length shall be adequate to accommodate 2-inch (51mm) thick pipe insulation.

FOR USE ONLY IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE PROPOSAL,

ORDER OR CONTRACT OF WHICH THIS IS A PART Page 1 of 4

Copper, brass, zinc, and alloys of these materials shall not be used in the construction of
this valve.

Valve shall meet the requirements of API 609 Category B, except the seat shall meet the body
pressure rating at the operating temperature range listed above.

Actuator extensions, high-temperature grease, etc., shall be provided as required to ensure

proper function of the actuator at elevated maximum valve operating temperature.

Valve shall be furnished with a lockable device that enables the valve to be locked in both the
open and closed positions, when specified on the purchase order.

The Disc/Shaft design shall be double–offset to extend seat life. Concentric disc/shaft designs
and unreinforced Teflon seats are not permitted.

3.0 ACCEPTABLE MATERIALS

Body – Carbon steel, ASTM A216 Gr WCB

Disc – Carbon steel, welded nickel edge

Carbon steel, electroless nickel plated
Stainless steel

Shaft – 17-4 PH stainless steel

316 stainless steel

Seat – Reinforced Teflon. Acceptable Teflon reinforcings are

glass, carbon, or a mixture of glass and carbon

Seat backup ring (if required) – Manufacturer’s Standard

Bearings and seals – Manufacturer’s Standard (grease lubricated construction not

acceptable)

4.0 ACTUATOR

Painted* weatherproof gear operator with painted handwheel (provide galvanized

chainwheel and required galvanized chain when specified on Purchase Order).

*
A chemical conversion coating, such as phosphatizing, is acceptable in lieu of painting. Painting is not required on
nonferrous surfaces.

5.0 TESTS

Each valve shall be tested per API 598 with the following clarifications:

• Shell Test – Each valve shall be given a shell test at a gauge pressure no less than 1.5
times the 100°F (38°C) rating, rounded off to the next higher 25 psi (172 KPa) increment,
for the minimum specified test duration, per ASME B16.34. The test shall be made with
the valve in the partially open position. No visible leakage is permitted. The test medium
shall be clean, oil-free air, nitrogen or clean water.

• Low-Pressure Closure Test – Each valve shall be given a low-pressure closure test. No
visible leakage is permitted through the disk, behind the seat rings, or past the shaft seals,
and no structural damage is permitted. During the closure test, there shall be zero leakage
past the seats for the minimum specified test duration. The test medium shall be clean,
oil-free air or inert gas, such as nitrogen, NOT a liquid.

6.0 CLEANING

This valve shall be cleaned and processed in accordance with Praxair Standard GS-40.

7.0 IDENTIFICATION

The following information shall be permanently affixed to each valve:

• V-2110

• Information as identified in API 609, such as:

– Manufacturer’s name and model

– Size of valve

– ASME body pressure class

– API 609B

• The valve tag number specified on the Purchase Order shall be stamped on a permanent
tag and attached to the valve body (not handwheel or lever) with a stainless wire.

• A separate tag indicating cleaning per Praxair Standard GS-40 shall also be attached to
the valve.

• A separate tag indicating high-temperature grease and minimum temperature

requirements shall be attached to the gearbox when utilizing high-temperature grease in
the gearbox.

8.0 COMPLIANCE

Deviations from this specification shall not be made without the written approval of Buyer.

9.0 DRAWINGS

Certified supplier drawings are required for supplier approval process prior to placement of
Purchase Order. Drawings must include dimensional information, materials of construction,
cleaning specifications and the applicable Praxair Standard number (V-Spec). Drawings shall
indicate maximum expected temperature of the gearbox and any special consideration given to the
actuator due to the elevated maximum valve operating temperature. Submittal of certified supplier
drawings is not required for subsequent Purchase Orders if Buyer has previously received and
approved the certified supplier drawings.

Upon successful completion of the above review by Praxair, the supplier shall provide
certified supplier drawings and finalized cleaning procedures for Praxair approval. All valves shall
be supplied in accordance with the approved supplier drawings, and shall be cleaned using the
approved cleaning procedure. No changes are permitted without written approval from Praxair.
