Interior Design and Interior Decoration with Textiles

Abstract
In order to achieve a healthier and more aesthetically sound environment for the people
using the space with the help of enhancing art and science is called interior design. The part
played by the interior designers is related to the planning, research, coordinating and
managing the whole project. Interior design is the process of creating and coordinating with
elements inside many kinds of structures. Choosing fabrics that will look beautiful, last and
suit life style is supposed to be the important criteria from properly available materials and
patterns. Textile fabrics are wonderful option for home furnishing. In many interior
decorations, for the design purpose, textiles are thought after wards. Fabrics are generally
used to provide a splash of Colour or texture to the room. Functionally and aesthetically,
textures hold a large part of our interior space and play significant role. Fabrics add colours
to the interior whether home or office.

INTRODUCTION began to remit through their expansion

The interior decoration is the resultant
effect of development of society and
industrial progress and has become a
profession. In U.S, the interior design and
interior decoration are treated as one and
same, although in reality these are separate
and distinct. In India, homes like mansions
generally known as havelis, have been
developed during medieval period in the
form of wall art paintings. Interior
decoration was the concern of home
makers during the periods between 17th
and 19th century, because of the artistic
styles chosen by them for interior space.
Interior design is also used by the
architects to employ the craftsmen in
building construction. In the periods
between mid and late 19th century, interior
design expanded greatly due to the
increase in space and prosperity of middle
class people in industrialized countries. It
was developed to show-up the standards of
the statue of the people because of their
wealth and prosperity. Upholstery business
programmes in the period between 1850’s
and 1960’s. The purpose was to advertise
their business status in the public in artistic
terms. As the departmental stores
increased in number and in size, retail
spaces within the shops were furnished in
different styles as examples for customers.
This type of firms emerged in America
after the Civil War. In 1982, the London
directory of the Post Office listed 80
interior decorators. Some of the most
distinguished companies of the period
were Crace, Thomas Eward Collcutt,
Edward William Godwin, Charles Barry,
etc [1].
Interior decorating concentrates on the
aesthetics of a space, how to pair an open
floor with complementary furniture and
decor accents or create atmosphere or
mood with lighting or wall sconces.
Interior decorators choose the paint colour
for the walls while interior designers will
knock it down to alter the structure of the

room [2]. Interior decorating deals with the
look and feel of a room by adding
accessories like drapes and rugs, interior
designers make the best use of the space.
People often think interior decorating and
interior designing are the same, but
actually they are not.
Many people get confused with interior
design and interior decoration, which
creates great problem. Interior design
refers to designing an entire living space
from scratch and Interior decoration is
related to decorate the existing living
space with beautification by upholstery.
Interior design is indeed a science that is
bound by its own elements and principles
and it is not as simple as one imagines to
be. Generally interior designers go by the
rule book which states that there are seven
elements and seven principle of interior
design [3].
Interior design enhances the experience of
shaping the interior space with the help of
certain manipulation of special volume and
surface change technique. In addition to
the traditional decoration, interior design
deals with the environmental psychology,
architecture and development in
production design. Through the work of
interior design, a creative practice is
achieved which analyzes programmed
information. This helps to establish
conceptual direction for refined design
with graphic communication and
construction documents. In some
jurisdictions interior designers must be
licensed to practice [4].
Interior design is the process of creating
and coordinating elements inside many
kinds of structures. These elements might
include colour schemes, surfaces finishes,
furniture and decorative pieces. It is a
process used in residences but also in
offices, retail stores and even places like
restaurants and airports. Textiles are one of
many elements interior designers use in

planning the look of a space. Textiles are
important in interior design. Textiles are
fabric materials usually made by
interlacing yarns of fibres like silk and
cotton or synthetic fibres like nylon and
rayon. Processes for making textiles
include knitting and weaving [5].
Interior decorating is not just about finding
the right furniture and accessories but it is
also important to choose the right fabrics.
From the proper materials to the best
patterns here is the starter guide to
choosing fabrics that will look beautiful,
last and suit the life style as stated [6]. Jess

Fabrics do a lot for design. They bring
colour, texture, and a level of detail that
finishes a space. No room is finished
without them. Fabrics are not just for
window coverings and pillows though they
propose some tips for using textiles
correctly and creatively for a distinctive,
professional look [7]. Using several
different patterns in the fabrics is a great
way to keep the design interesting. But
they can get overwhelming quickly if mix
too many other things in it. It is advised to
keep the colour palate simple and stick to
similar colours for all patterns to
incorporate.
It is an age old practice to use fabrics for
making interior decoration. Fabrics are
wonderful options for home furnishings.
Fabrics like silk, chiffon, organza and
stretch fabrics are chosen by the interior
decorators for making interior decoration
as per the modern concepts in interior

designing. Stretch fabrics have the great
advantage of their durability and excellent
washing ability for using as interior
designing. Apart from great variety and
wide range of colours of fabrics it is the
replacement benefit of the same and the
cost-effectiveness due to their replacement
benefit [8].
Interior design textiles work to unify the
room and help during the space together.
This is the area where colour palate comes
into picture. Once it is decided about a
colour, one or two of the colours usually
secondary and accent shades may be
selected and can be used them in various
textiles throughout the room. For an
example, in the faux-far, gives the room a
glamorous and feminine feel. Since it is
white, it ties in with the walls, the bedding
and the furniture to help the room feel
cohesive. From such ideas, one may know
what textiles are and why they are so
important for the design and the next step
comes to learn how to use them correctly
[9].
Fabrics are generally used to provide a
splash colour or texture to the room and
people can use fabrics to pull out the decor
they are going for or simply to accent it.
When it comes to fabric, there are many
selections to choose from and it may be
hard to figure out which one works best
for the home. Fabric selection for covering
pillow and windows are not the ultimate
choice but it is equally important for
covering the furniture also. Important
considerations are related to space used,
high traffic area to be used regularly or
when guests comes over, condition of light
in the room whether any pet is there or not
or any children is there in the home or not
[10].
Fabrics add colors to the interior, whether
home or office. The colours can vary
according to the place, bright, warm,
colours for homes and dark subtle hues for

offices. As per the suggestions of the
interior designing system, fabric colour
selection is very important due to
matching with the furniture and the
combination of the two items add to the
overall effect of the concept of interior
design. For office decoration, normally
plain solid coloured fabrics are suggested
where as for homes, fabrics of different
colours and variable patterns may be
selected. The design can vary from
traditional, embroidery, cross-stitch, etc
[11]. Fabrics used as covers for furniture
like sofa, chairs, mattresses, etc. They can
be used as drapes i. e curtains as well as
bed sheets. It can be used as cushion and
pillow covers, sheets that cover dining
table, napkins, towels, etc.
Natural textiles with exceptional
characteristics like silk, will perfectly
complement both traditional and
contemporary high-end interiors with their
unique and elegant appearance. The
smooth surfaces of the fibrils reflect light
at many angles, giving it natural shear
effect. Once very rare and expensive, this
timeless materials now comes in a broad
range of choices from nothing makes the
space more elegant than a luscious full
length silk, curtain. When using silk as
drapery, an interlining is a necessity in
order to protect its gentle fibres from the
sun. !00% natural silk can be recognized
by irregularities on the surface that are
desirable and expected and give it a unique
characteristic [12].
New interior textile development is
motivated by an ongoing global shift of
supply and competition. Traditional
manufacturers actually focus their
development on the addition of innovative
functions and utility value. Interior textiles
are produced for either domestic or
contract markets. Domestic textiles are
those found in the home or private
interiors. Contract textiles are those found
in public or commercial interiors. Interior

textiles are usually discussed in relation to
two key categories: furnishing fabrics and
household textiles [13].
HISTORY OF INTERIOR DESIGN
The protection of interior design has been
a consequence of the development of
society and the complex architecture that
has resulted from the development of
industrial processes. The pursuit of
effective use of space, user well-being and
functional design has contributed to the
development of the contemporary interior
design profession. The profession of
interior design is separate and distinct
from the role of interior decoration, a term
commonly used in U S. In ancient India,
architects used to work as interior
designers. In medieval period, wall art
paintings in India was a common feature
of the places like mansions commonly
known as havalis. Most of the traditional
homes were done away with modern
buildings. There are around 2000 havalis
in the Shekhawati region in Rajasthan that
display wall art paintings [1].
In the mid-to-late 19th century, interior
design services expanded greatly. Large
furniture firms began to branch out into
general interior design and management,
offering full furnishings in a variety of
styles. In 1950’s and 1960’s, upholsters
began to expand their business remits.
Firms began to publish and circulate cat
logs with prints for different lavish styles
to attract the attention of expanding middle
classes. An important role by the
traditional firms began to start in Britain in
designing and furnishing the interiors in
many important buildings through their
role as advisors to the middle class people
in tastes and styles related to furnishing
interiors. In American approach also, this
type of firms started their activities after
the American Civil War. The Herter
Brothers founded by two German Emigre
brothers, began as an upholstery
warehouse and became one of the first

firms of furniture makers and interior
decorators. Jones became a pivotal figure
in popularizing theories of interior
designing of 19th century. His most
significant publication was The Grammar
of Ornament (1856), in which Jones
formulated 37 key principals of interior
design and decoration. By the turn of 20th
century, amateur advisors and publications
were increasingly challenging the
monopoly that the large companies had on
interior design.
The interior design profession became
more established after the World War II.
From the 1950s onwards spending on
home increased. For the requirements of
the publication of text books and also for
references, the interior design courses
started. In this profession, gradually
organizations started regulating education,
qualification standards and practices, etc
were established. Various design
disciplines, like work of craftsmen,
architects, designs, industrial designs, etc
have lot of connections with the interior
design. Interior design is based on the
concepts of art and science of
understanding people’s behaviour and
concept regarding creativity related to
functional spaces in a building. Decoration
is done with the help of furnishing
elements or adorning a space with certain
decorative materials. Sometimes these
approaches are enlightened by active and
practical assistance. The main difference
between the two is that interior designers
may decorate but decorators cannot
design.
The basic difference between interior
design and interior decoration in that the
former more emphasis is given on
planning, functional design and
effectiveness in space utilization. The
interior decoration deals with the
development skill in environmental
decoration relating functional ability, and
safety and adhering to building codes and

regulations and requirements for ADA.
One may be expert in specialization in
developing knowledge in technical aspects
specific for one area or related to interior
design like residential area, design
communication, health care design,
universal design, furniture design and
spatial branding. Interior design is always
a profession related to creativity with new
concepts, continuous change and even
sometimes become confusion to public. In
interior decoration, the powerful design
tool is the colour and it is equally
applicable to interior design also, which is
the tool in creating stylish scheme on the
architectural approach in designing the
space through various compositions and
co-ordination of colours.
Residential design is related to the interior
of private residences. As the type of design
is very specific for individual situations,
the needs and wants of the individual are
paramount in this area of interior design.
Commercial design encompasses a wide
range of sub-specialities. The examples of
such sub-specialities are like, retail, visual
and spatial branding, corporate, healthcare,
hospitality and recreation, institutional,
industrial facilities, exhibition, traffic
buildings, etc. Other areas of specialization
include amusement and theme park design,
museum, exhibition design and event
design, interior and prop styling, craft
styling and many more. Individuals can
have various options to become
professional interior designer. But all of
the avenues require some method of
training. For any professional practice,
training through any institute is more
formal route. Now-a- days there are
several degree colleges to educate oneself
in this area. Any institution which is
accredited or developed with a
professional designer in interior design
course is able to provide a minimum
standard of excellence to offer students a
high standard of education in this course.

There are a wide range of working
conditions and employment opportunities
within interior design. Large and tiny
corporations often hire interior designers
as employees on regular hour basis.
Interior designers often work under stress
to meet deadlines, stay on budget and meet
clients, needs. The Art Deco style began in
Europe in the early years of the 20th
Century, with the warning of Art Nouveau.
Art Deco rejected traditional materials of
decoration and interior design opting
instead of using more unusual materials
such as chrome, glass, stainless steel, shiny
fabrics, mirrors, aluminium, inlaid wood,
shark skin and zebra skin. The colour
theme of Art Deco consisted of metallic
colour, neutral colour, bright colour and
black colour and white colour. Modern
design grew out of the decorative arts
mostly from Art Deco in the 20th Century.
Modern art does not refer to the era or age
of design and is not the same as
contemporary design. Majlis painting also
called Nagesh painting is the decoration of
the Majlis or Front Parlor of traditional
Arabic homes in the Asir province of
Saudi Arabia and adjoining parts of
Yemen. These wall paintings, an
Arabesque form of Mural of Fresco, show
various geometric designs in bright
colours, called Nagesh in Arabic the wall
paintings were a mark of pride for a
women in her house.
PRINCIPLES OF INTERIOR DESIGN
AND INTERIOR DECORATION
Interior decorators choose the paint colour

space, new construction blue prints and
building permits are not the interior
decorators’ work.

Space is of two types, two dimensional
spaces which include length and width and
three dimensional spaces which form the
living space which includes length, width
and height. A space that is essentially
filled with furniture/decor items is a
positive space and an empty space is a
negative space and equilibrium has to be
maintained between the positive and
negative spaces. Lines give birth to forms
and shapes and are responsible for
establishing a sense of harmony, contrast
and unity in a living space. Lines are
broadly categorized into three types,
namely horizontal, vertical and dynamic.
Horizontal lines add a safe and secure
feeling to the space, Vertical lines emotes
free and expensive nature and dynamic
lines add drama and can be seen on
structures like stairs. Forms mean shapes
in general an outline of any three
dimensional object in the space. Forms can
be created by combining two or more
shapes and can be accentuated with the
help of other elements like texture,
patterns and colours. Two types of forms
are geometric and natural respectively.
Light is one of the most obvious elements
of interior design. Either natural or man-

made without light other elements namely
texture, colour and pattern have no
significance. Patterns add life and interest
to the interior design. Patterns could be of
any shape and mostly comprise of
attractive types. Paisley, a design pattern
which takes the shape of a droplet shape
vegetables which is one of the most
commonly used patterns on wall paintings,
pillow covers and other decorative
surfaces.
Interior design is regarded as the technique
in a process to become expertise in the
interior space designing with the help of
manipulation of spatial volume and surface
decoration. This is not interior decoration.
It deals with environmental psychology as
well as architectural science and product
design apart from traditional decoration.
Interior design through its creative
activities, analysing programmed
information moves in a conceptual
direction and refining the direction of
designs to produce graphic communication
with construction documents. While doing
the work of interior designing it is to be
considered that the house is a total element
in which series of spaces are linked
including halls and staircases. Therefore, it
is urgently necessary that a common style
and theme must be kept in mind during the
work. Colour plays an important role in
unifying a collection of spaces. In interior
design, the three styles in balance are
symmetrical, asymmetrical and radial.
Symmetrical balance is usually found in
the traditional interiors. Asymmetrical
balance is more appropriate design in these
days. Radial symmetry is when the
elements of a design are arrayed around a
centre point. Using one element or same
element more than once throughout the
space is known as repetition. In the design
progression, any element may be used in
decreasing or increasing order with its one
or more qualities in the process. It is
somewhat difficult to explain the
transition. An arched doorway or winding

path is an example of most common
transition which gently leads the eye.
Contrast is fairly straight forward putting
two elements in opposition to one another.
Interior design is the process of creating

USE OF TEXTILES IN INTERIOR
DESIGN
Interior decorating is not just about finding
the right furniture and accessories. It is
also important to choose the right fabrics
for interior design. From the proper
materials to the best patterns, here lies the
importance of choosing fabrics that will
look beautiful, last and suit the life style
[6]. The most popular natural fabrics
include cotton, silk, linen and wool. For
synthetics rayon, acrylic, nylon, polyester
and acetate are the common. Cotton is
very strong, versatile, breathable and
affordable. Silk is luxurious but far more
expensive. Linen has a more casual look.
Wool is the strongest and most durable of
all natural fabrics. Rayon is commonly
used for window curtains. Acrylic is stain
resistant, colour fast, and fade resistant.
Nylon like wool is very tough and long
lasting. Polyester is another fabric that is
often blended with natural fibres in
upholstery. Sophisticated design involves
layering various patterns and texture in
terms of choosing the right mix of fabrics
and patterns. Generally.., the key rule is to
mix no more than three patterns or
textures. Base fabric(s) are selected and
colour schemes are built on it. For multiple

patterns the style may vary. Best
combination of the three patterns may be
one floral, one stripe and one geometric.
Colour selection from the colour wheel
should be opposites or near opposite. For
small room large pattern should be
avoided.
Fabrics do a lot for the design. They bring
colour, texture and a level of detail that
finishes a space. Using several different
patterns in fabrics is the great method to
keep the colour palate simple and stick to
similar colours for all the patterns that are
incorporated [7]. Fine textiles woven into
blankets, bright throw pillows, intricately
embroidered linens all could be stand-
alone. They can be displayed on the walls
as art or make them the visual centre of the
design. The advantages of the textiles have
to be obtained from the fabrics. There are
plenty of textile looks and patterns on
other surfaces that could be added for the
same interest and mood to the space.
Fabric look tiles for instance is a great way
to build a foundation on the textiles but
still be able to rely on durability and easy
cleanable appearance of line.
An age old concept is to use fabrics for
making interior decoration. Silk, chiffon,
organza and stretch fabrics are widely
chosen in the interior decoration according
to the modern concept of interior
decorators. Fabrics which are used in the
hospitality area of interior decoration are
called Hospitality fabrics [8]. These
fabrics are more durable. Cushion covers,
sofa covers, table covers etc., are meant
for comfort and service for the users and
thus these fabrics used in this area are
mainly made by hospitality fabrics. White
silk is one of the most interior designers’
fabrics. Organza and Chiffon are better
types of hospitality fabrics because of their
better durability and intensive wash
friendliness. Chiffon fabric made curtains
look equally good on arch windows and on
connecting .doors. One of the great

advantages of stretch fabrics is its
durability and excellent wash convenience.
Apart from great variety and wide range of
colours, fabric made upholstery has
another prime advantage which is the
replacement benefit of the same and the
cost-benefit to its replacement benefit.
In interior design, textiles are considered
as finishing touch rather than a crucial
component of the design as a whole. But in
practice, we cannot design a room without
any textiles. As per the suggestions of the
author [09], people must learn the
contribution of textiles in the designing
rooms by using them in the right way. In
the interior design, textiles refer to any
product that is a woven or made of fabrics.
It may sound simple, but these pieces are
used in a variety of applications
throughout any room. The design elements
may be in any forms of the throw pillow,
blankets, and rugs, window curtains,
upholstery and wall art. Textiles go a long
way toward helping set the mood of the
space. Textiles also work to unify the
room and help bring the space together.
The importance of colour palette plays the
role of selecting right colour by using them
in different ways on textiles. Textiles may
serve as the inspiration of the space,
providing a colour palette upon which to
build the room. Another way to add visual
interest to the space is by using textiles
that come in a variety of textures.
The importance of textiles in interior lies
in the hands of the designer who often play
with a variety of fabrics to create the
desired look. Fabrics are generally used to
provide a splash of colour or texture to the
room and fabrics can be used to pull out
the decor as desired. Selection of the
fabrics for designing a room is very tough
job, especially for covering the furniture
and window curtains or pillows for the
room [10]. In fabrics, there are many
different types out there and the
combinations are endless but for the

purpose of practicality people look at
100% fabric materials and none of the
combination fabrics. Rayon has a bright
shiny texture to it and is a great choice for
many homes that is looking for something
that is more durable than silk. Silk has a
soft lustre to it and the fibres themselves
are actually prism like, which is why the
material shines, it reflects light at various
angles. Polyester is a synthetic fibre that is
used in a variety of ways and can be found
in a large number of textures. Cotton is
comfortable and breathable, which makes
it an excellent fabric to work with. Acrylic
is soft and comfortable and its durability
makes it an excellent choice for home
decor. Nylon is a resilient fabric that is
silky in texture and is usually resistant to
stains and it holds colour extremely well.
The main thing to remember about fabrics
is that the choice of something is about its
comfort and fit for the desired lifestyle.
PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT IN
INTERIOR DECORATION
Comfort is one of the most important
factors to be taken into account while
choosing the perfect fabric for interior
design. People have their own tastes
according to the feel of the fabric, such as
some may prefer silk, while some prefer
rayon or cotton. The rate of use of fabrics
should be checked since some fabrics can
be used for regular use while others for
only special occasions [11]. The lighting is
one of the most important aspects of
interior design. For any personal space or
professional area, right ambiance can be
created through Proper lighting in the
surrounding zone as the amount of colour
and the luminosity of colour together can
work for beautification. Any desirable
lighting arrangement in the interior
decoration, it is essential to maintain a
proper balance between the colour and the
luminosity. While choosing the fabric for
any element, functionality must be kept in
mind. For example, fabrics to be used in
hotels, restaurants, hospitals, etc., should

be reusable but sturdy. Silk cannot be used
as covers for furniture like sofa, chairs,
etc. Similarly, acrylic cannot be used for
curtains. At the same time it must be kept
in mind that, the possibilities of damage
the fabric might have to ensure, such as
tearing, wearing out due to excessive use,
etc. Damage of the fabric may also be
caused by the children, pets, etc.
Normally, offices go for plain, solid
colored fabrics whereas, on can expect
fabrics of different patterns and designs for
homes. Design also varies from traditional,
embroideries, cross-stitch, etc.
Functional and aesthetic properties of
textiles play a large role in interior space
and affects significantly in day to day
activities. It is thought that fabrics may
seem like an insignificant element and a
small part of the picture, but the reality is
the room never seems complete without
the proper dose of decorative textiles.
There is no other way to personalise the
space than by adding a bunch of soft and
fluffy pillows, tender plaids and soft rugs
in the homes. The best alternative ways is
for a make-over, by replacing the textiles
in interiors, which can be changed for
