MODULE SET A CHAPTER 2: ATOMIC STRUCTURE

1. (a) Hydrogen atom contains only one electron but there are several lines in its
emission spectrum. The excited electrons of a group of irradiated hydrogen
atom are randomly scattered to n=1,2,3 and 4 energy level.

(i) Draw an energy level diagram to show all possible lines produced
when the electrons drop to lower energy levels.

(ii) Name the series of line formed when electron drop to third energy
level.

(iii) Describe the transition of the electron that corresponds to the shortest
wavelength?

(iv) Calculate the energy of photon and wavelength that produce the
shortest wavelength.

(b) Compare the energy of a mole of photons of green light with a wavelength
450 nm and a mol of microwave radiation having a frequency of 2.0 GHz.
Between green light and microwave radiation, which one produced greater
energy?

2. Given the following sets of quantum numbers for three (3) electrons at the
highest energy orbitals of element X.

4 0 0 -½

4 1 +1 +½

(a) State the type of orbital accommodate by the above electrons.

(b) Write the electronic configuration for element X

(c) Determine the atomic number of element X

(d) Predict the stable oxidation number of element X and write the electronic
configuration of ion X.
