EXPERIMENT NO: 3

OBJECTIVE: MEASUREMENT OF DISCHARGE AT

THE SOURCE OF WATER

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT'S

1. Ranging Rods
2. Steel Tape
3. Bottle
4. Measuring tape
5. Stop watch
6. Long pieces of wood

THEORY
The flow of water per unit time through a particular
cross section is called discharge of water. It is
generally expressed by m3 /s or liter/sec.
Mathematically: Discharge(Q)=Volume of water
time
PROCEDURE
1. At first we should go to the river nearly our school with all the
necessary tools.
2. Select the place where steep flow is available.
3. After selecting the place fix the station on one side of the river
about 25m. Similarly fixed in also another side by ranging rod
4. Then take the breadth of river from three different places
between station by us. Then take the average breadth from this.
5. And it is necessary to take the height at the one side to another
side of the river at 3 place with 6 times at one place by using steel
tape and take average height from this.
6. Now we have length, breadth and height from this we get the
volume of this river water by using formula (V=l*b*h) for the
discharge measurement we need time to measure the flow of
water.
7. We take a stop watch with 0:00:00 and take a bottle. Then go to
mid in the river and record time accurately to flow the bottle from
one station to another end station.
8. Perform this process for at least 3 times and take the average.
9. We have both volume and time of the river. Finally, we
calculate discharge of this river by using formula.
Discharge(Q)=Volume of river(V)
time(T)
