Lesson 2: Write Directions Using Signal Words

At the end of the module, you will be able to write directions using signal words.

Signal words give hints or clues about what is about to happen in what you are
reading. Knowing these signal words will help you in understanding what you are reading.

In writing directions, ideas should be arranged in the proper order. In this way, readers
will find it easy to understand. The signal words First, Next, Then and Lastly are used in
giving directions on how to do something. These signal words give the order of the activity.
These signal words should be used in order and need not be interchanged.

Here is an example on how to write directions using signal words: Tina’s family decided
to move to Puerto Princesa City. This place is known for its wonderful beaches and tourist
spots. Tina’s family went on a trip; they went for an island hopping. As a result, Tina had a
sunburn, her mom bought a lotion for her. She read the directions on the label. This is how
she writes the directions.

First, shake the bottle. Next, pour a small amount of lotion into the palm and apply it
on the affected areas. Then, seal the bottle tightly. Lastly, keep the bottle in a cool and dry
place.

The words FIRST, NEXT, THEN, and FINALLY are used to write directions in correct
order. They aid readers on what step should be done next. They are used in giving three to
four-step directions.
