Introduction:

The Internet has always been favourably regarded as informative, convenient, resourceful and capable of
producing economical as well as social benefits. However, criticisms encircling its negative effects are
rapidly arising. Evidences from studies conducted revealed that excessive and unmanageable use of the
Internet is associated with social, psychological and emotional impairment. This type of pathological
Internet use is more commonly referred to as Internet addiction or Digital overstimulation.

Students nowadays are so much exposed to technology and people often feel negative impacts of too
much exposure on a device. The population of senior high school & university students has been regarded
as one of the most susceptible to developing problematic or excessive Internet usage (Deloitte 2018; Vox
2020). This is the reason why we have conducted survey on the senior high school students in Mil-an
National High School. Our main objective in this survey is to know the negative impacts of technological
usage in the life of Grade-12 students in Mil-an National High School.

SURVEY RESULTS:

I. DEMOGRAPHIC PROFILE
Figure 1:

There are 41.4 percent of male respondents with the total of 36 students. Conversely, female respondents
are 58.6% of the population which is a total of 51 students.

The total number of students in four sections is (blank), on the other hand there is only (blank) percent of
respondents who answered the survey, which is a total of (blank). The surveyors are all STEM students,
therefore this contributes to the fact that there are much more STEM students compared to other sections
who answered the survey.

As shown in the graph above (Figure 2), STEM Students are the most dominant respondents in this survey
with the total of 28 respondents. Second comes the HUMMS-A students, with the total of 24 respondents.
Following are HUMMS-B students with the total of 17 respondents. Finally, ABM students with the
number of 18 respondents.

A total of 86 respondents, or 98.9% of the total population, own a mobile device. Meanwhile, 31
respondents own a television, accounting for 35.6% of all respondents. None of the students claimed to
own a VR or virtual reality. A total of 30 students, or 34.5% of the total population, own a personal
computer. Finally, 2.3% of the respondents, or two students, own an iPad or a tablet.

According to the chart above (figure 4), 39.1 percent of respondents, or 34 students, use their devices for
an average of 4-7 hours per day. Twenty students, or 24.1% of the population, use their devices for less
than three hours per day. On the other hand, 20 students, or 23% of the population, use their devices for
more than 10 hours per day on average. Finally, 12 students, or 13.8% of the total population, use their
devices for an average of 8-10 hours per day.

2. Do you find it hard to sleep after using your device or after consuming too much information?

As shown in the Figure 6 above, 59.8% of the total population said "sometimes", 17.2% for "often", 12.6%
for "never", and lastly 10.3% answered "always". The results indicate that almost every respondents are
deprived of sleep at some point in their lives because of digital use.

4. Does digital overload or too much use of your device causes you to loose focus on your school works?

As shown in the Figure 8 above, 54% of the respondents have answered "sometimes", 28.7% said
"often", 10.3% said "always", and the other 6.9% answered never.

6. Learning through my device is enjoyable

Based in the Figure 10 above, students who responded "agree" are the 69% of the total population.
Alternatively, 14.9% answered "strongly disagree" and another 14.9% said "disagree". Finally, only 1.1%
of the students answered "strongly disagree".

8. I have more friends online than offline.

As shown in the Figure 12 above, 55.2% of the total respondents answered "disagree". Conversely, 26.4%
said "agree", 13.8% said "strongly disagree", and the other 4.6% answered "strongly agree".
10. Losing to video games or online competitions causes anxiety

According to the Figure 14 above, 50.6% of the total respondents said "disagree". Another 26.4% of
studens have answered "strongly disagree", 21.8% answered "agree", and lastly only 1.1% of the
population answered "strongly agree".

12. How much do you spend daily, related in the use of your device ( e. g. Buying products in video games,
Paying for VIP experience online)

As shown in the Figure 15 above, most of the students answered "none", which has 48.3% of responses
from the total population. Another 29.9% of the students spend "less than 100 pesos" on device related
expenses. Moreover, 12.6% of the students spend "100-500 pesos", 6.9% of the students spend "500-
1000 pesos", and finally 2.3% spend "more than 1,000 pesos" on expenses related to their device.

14. Does using your device causes headaches

The majority of students, or 74.4% of all respondents, reported that using their device occasionally causes
headaches, and 10.3% said it frequently causes headaches. In contrast, 17.2% said their devices do not
give them headaches.
