ABSTRACT
The study examined households’ responses to economic shock and food insecurity in Dambatta
local government area of Kano State, Nigeria. A multistage purposive, and a random sampling
techniques were employed and 125 households were selected in the study area. Descriptive
statistics, household income and expenditure measures were employed in the data analysis. The
result revealed that majority of the households (72%) fall between 36 and 55 years age groups,
from them 86% were female households, 70.4% had between 5 and 15 household members and
had education background. It revealed that 66.4% of the respondents had enrolled with
cooperatives, and engaged in off farm enterprise. Result shows that they predominantly
produced and consumed millet, maize, sorghum, cowpeas groundnut and sesame with average
yield of 1070 kg/ha, 908 kg/ha, 797 kg/ha, 394 kg/ha, and 698 kg/ha, respectively. The findings
revealed a proportion of 22.4% from the respondents were foods secure (3 rd), 39.0% as less food
insecure, 25.6% moderately insecure with average incomes of N1, 000 to (N50,001≥). It revealed
that 28.8% of them had reduced food intake, 19.2% of them reduced meal intake frequency, and
13.6 % borrowed food among other alternatives as a measure. Constraints to food insecurity
coping identified included price inflation, higher interest charges banks loans; low produce
disposal prices, lack of access to government and private individuals supports services. It has
been recommended that political will and sincerity with political representatives public and in
order to have a significant impact on the population’s economics status and welfare, supply
chains must be kept functioning as crucial to food security.
