CPD22203 – HEAT TRANSFER

CONDUCTION

TUTORIAL 2

1. If 3 kW is conducted through a section of insulated material 1.0 m2 in cross section

and 2.5 cm thick. The thermal conductivity is taken as 0.2 W/m.K, compute the
temperature difference across the material.

2. The inner and outer surfaces of a 0.5 cm thick, 2 m x 2 m window glass in winter are
10°C and 3°C respectively. If the thermal conductivity of the glass is 0.78 W/mK,
determine the amount of heat loss in kJ, through the glass over a period of 5 hours.
What would your answer be if the glass were 1 cm thick?

3. Heat is transferred at a rate of 0.05 kW through glass wool insulation (k = 0.0038

W/mK) of 5 cm thickness and 2 m2 area. If the hot surface is at 70oC, determine the
temperature of the cooler surface.

4. A lagged steam pipe has a total outside diameter of 0.12 m, including a 20 mm thick
layer of calcium silicate insulation on the outside. The inner and outer surfaces of the
insulation are at temperatures of 800 K and 490 K respectively. Calculate the heat loss
per unit length of pipe. Thermal conductivity of calcium silicate = 0.07 W m-1K-1.

5. A heat flux meter at the outer (cold) wall of a concrete building indicates that the heat
loss through a wall of 10 cm thickness is 20 W/m2. If a thermocouple at the inner
surface wall indicates a temperature of 22oC while another at the outer surface shows
6oC, calculate the thermal conductivity of the concrete.

6. A stainless steel pipe with a length of 35 ft has an inner diameter of 0.92 ft and an outer
diameter of 1.08 ft. The temperature of the inner surface of the pipe is 122oF and the
temperature of the outer surface is 118oF. The thermal conductivity of the stainless
steel is 108 Btu/hr-ft-oF.
i) Calculate the heat transfer rate through the pipe.
ii) Calculate the heat flux at the outer surface of the pipe.
