12 | P a g e
How do Insulated Concrete Forms work?

Insulated Concrete Forms (ICFs) stand as a testament to innovation in modern

construction, providing a robust and energy-efficient alternative to traditional building

methods. The fundamental concept behind ICFs involves a straightforward yet ingenious

approach.

ICFs are essentially interlocking modular units that serve as both the framework and

insulation for a structure. Typically measuring 4 feet in length and 16 inches in height, these

blocks are arranged in a running bond pattern during construction, much like assembling a

giant puzzle. The key to their strength lies in the evenly spaced vertical webs within the blocks,

creating a structural framework akin to traditional masonry.

What sets ICFs apart is the hollow cavity formed by these interlocked blocks. This

cavity, whose thickness can vary between 4 to 12 inches, is filled with concrete, creating a solid

and well-insulated wall. This combination of concrete and insulation not only ensures structural

integrity but also provides excellent thermal resistance, contributing to energy efficiency in

buildings.

The simplicity of the ICF concept belies its effectiveness. Once the blocks are in place

and filled with concrete, they form a continuous, monolithic structure that offers superior

strength and durability. The resulting walls boast excellent insulation properties, reducing the

need for additional insulation materials and enhancing the overall energy efficiency of the

structure.

In essence, ICFs work by seamlessly integrating the structural and insulating

components of a building into a single, efficient system. This not only simplifies the

construction process but also leads to structures that are resilient, energy-efficient, and

adaptable to a variety of architectural designs. As the construction industry continues to

13 | P a g e
prioritize sustainability and efficiency, the role of ICFs in shaping the buildings of the future

becomes increasingly prominent.

By introducing a range of ICF sizes, including standard options and specialized blocks,

you can provide builders and architects with the flexibility needed for customization. This

approach allows for diverse design possibilities while maintaining the benefits of ICF

construction, such as energy efficiency and structural strength. Additionally, offering blocks

with integrated finishing options enhances the aesthetic appeal of the final structures.

How Build Block Insulating Concrete Forms (ICFs) are Made

Modern ICFs use two types of materials to create the forms which are left in place to

provide insulation and disaster resistance.

The first component of ICFs is expanded polystyrene or EPS foam, which make up

the insulating panels. The foam panels hold in the concrete during the pour and provide high

insulation after the structure is built. EPS is a rigid and tough closed cell foam that is used for

disposable trays, plates, bowls, cups and food packaging. The fact that EPS is so great at

keeping your coffee warm and soda cold makes it perfect for doing the same for residential and

commercial structures.

The second component of Build Block insulating concrete forms are polypropylene

plastic webs which bridge the two panels together and provide screw and attachment points

for bracing and alignment during construction. Attaching finishes to the wall such as, stucco,

EIFS, brick, or siding on the outside and sheetrock or plaster on the inside.

Polystyrene foams are produced using blowing agents that form bubbles and expand

the foam. Build Block plastic Webs are made from high-density plastic. Build Block combines

14 | P a g e
both new material and recycled material into the finished product.

Process of making ICFs by Build Block Building System

1. The Build Block ICF webs are loaded into specially designed molds.

2. The two pieces of this mold will lock together, and the very light foam beads will flow

into the mold.

3. Hot steam is then pumped into the mold and the beads rapidly expand and stick together.

4. After a few moments, the mold separates, and the finished block is pushed out.

Strategic Solutions for Overcoming Gaps in ICF Manufacturing

materials explaining the benefits and installation process of ICFs.

• Brochures

- Providing a brief overview of ICF technology by emphasizing its key

advantages and highlighting the energy efficiency, durability and environmental

benefits. It can also include a step-by-step installation process with visuals.

- The use of ICF in construction is not well known locally for insulating

residential and commercial buildings. Common concerns and misconceptions

may arise due to the unfamiliarity of the builders, architects and consumers.

Producing brochures with addressed concerns and misconceptions about IFC

may reduce the problem.

• Educational Workshops and Seminars

- Educational workshops and seminars play a pivotal role in enhancing

understanding and promoting the adoption of Insulated Concrete Forms (ICFs).

15 | P a g e
These sessions involve in-person or virtual events that delve deep into ICF

technology, providing participants with hands-on demonstrations of the

installation process. Addressing questions and concerns directly, these

workshops offer valuable takeaways in the form of informational materials. To

maximize reach, promotion is key, with efforts directed at advertising through

Forms (ICFs) presents a revolutionary departure from traditional building methods.

This essay explores the myriad benefits of using ICFs compared to the conventional

approach, emphasizing the efficiency gains and sustainability embedded in this

innovative construction technology.

ICFs fundamentally alter the way structures are built, offering a holistic solution

that combines both structural integrity and energy efficiency. Unlike traditional

methods that rely on separate elements for structure and insulation, ICFs seamlessly

integrate both functions into a single system. The blocks, typically 4 feet long and 16

inches high, interlock in a running bond pattern to form a robust structure. The evenly

16 | P a g e
spaced webs within the blocks create a cavity that is filled with concrete, resulting in a

monolithic and well-insulated wall.

The primary advantage of ICF construction lies in its unparalleled energy

efficiency. The continuous insulation provided by the foam forms results in structures

with significantly higher thermal resistance, reducing the reliance on additional

insulation materials. This translates to improved energy performance, lower heating and

cooling costs, and a reduced carbon footprint over the lifespan of the building.

Another compelling benefit of ICFs is their structural strength. The interlocking

blocks, filled with reinforced concrete, create buildings that can withstand extreme

weather events and provide enhanced resistance to fire and other hazards. The durability

of ICF structures ensures a longer lifespan, contributing to reduced maintenance costs

over time.

Beyond efficiency and durability, ICF construction also offers a streamlined and

cost-effective process. The money spent on ICFs encompasses both the structural

components and the insulation, eliminating the need for separate materials and labor

associated with traditional methods. Additionally, the ease of construction and reduced

need for skilled laborers contribute to faster project completion times, further

optimizing costs.

ICFs afford unlimited design flexibility, enabling architects and builders to

create structures with unique and intricate features. The versatility of ICFs allows for

the construction of radius walls, multiple elevations, and other architectural elements

with ease. This creative freedom, coupled with the structural and energy efficiency

benefits, positions ICFs as a preferred choice for forward-thinking builders and

designers.

17 | P a g e
The adoption of ICFs heralds a new era in construction, where efficiency,

sustainability, and design freedom converge. The integrated approach of combining

structure and insulation, along with the myriad advantages in energy efficiency and

durability, makes ICF construction a compelling choice. As we consider the cost-

effectiveness and streamlined construction process, it becomes evident that ICFs not

only redefine how we build but also pave the way for a more efficient, resilient, and
