COURSE DESCRIPTION & RATIONALE
• INOFABU is an elective course designed to explore the intricacies
of managing family-owned enterprises in light of business,
personal, and family issues that influence decision-making tasks
as well as firm operations.
• The managerial, strategic, financial, and behavioral complexities
in these enterprises will also be discussed throughout the term.
• FACT: As much as 2/3 of businesses around the world including
the Philippines are family-owned (Family Firm Institute, 2017).
• Since a vast majority of firms in the country as well as globally are
owned by families, the probability of your prospective careers
being shaped by a family business is very high.

Oral Report on the Profile and Unique
Practices of a Prominent Family Business
• Each group is expected to deliver either a recorded or live
presentation of the following facts in less than fifteen (15)
minutes and in under 20 slides:
1. Brief history of the company
2. Current Products/Services
3. Ownership/Management Structure highlighting the
extent of family participation
4. Unique issues/challenges faced by the family in terms of
ownership, governance, strategy, operations, etc.
5. What the future holds for the family firm
FINAL PROJECT
• The final project is a continuation of your short oral report on the
profile and unique practices of a prominent family business.
• For the first part of the final project, you are required to use the Family
Business Crisis Readiness Matrix developed by Jayakumar and De Massis
(2020) in identifying the quadrant where your assigned family firm
belongs. Your choice must of course be explained.
• Afterwards, your team is expected to propose a set of at least three (3)
strategic alternatives based on the four possible strategic responses
listed by Wenzel, Stanske and Lieberman (2020). All proposed
strategies must be explained in detail and orally defended in class on
your scheduled date of presentation.
• Templates will be provided to you for convenience.

Since attendance will NOT be checked in this class, your presence in our synchronous classes is
not expected.

Class participation is appreciated but not required.

If you choose to attend our session, the teacher assumes that you are interested to listen and engage
with the class so please be alert and attentive; DO NOT sleep, play video games, drive, go shopping,
play with your pets, cook, or do anything that will distract you from engaging with the class.
