Behavioral Impact The Argument for Music Education

Level up your student’s social skills American Scientist, Volume 108, 2020

“ The argument for teaching music in schools takes three general forms. The indirect argument posits that music boosts
brain and cognitive function important for learning, which in turn facilitates success in school. The incentive argument
directly ties the benefits of music training to educational outcomes, such as graduation rates. The intangible argument

Enhanced Verbal Ability

Practicing a Musical Instrument in Childhood is Associated

instrumental group also received private lessons learning an instrument. The researchers also found that the longer and more
intensely the child had studied his or her instrument, the better he or she scored on these tests “

“ Results show that intensive music training is associated with improved performance in the core mathematical system for
representing abstract geometry. Controlling for an array of other variables (such as IQ, academic performance, social and

Training for the Development of Auditory Skills
N ature Reviews, euroscience, 2010; 11, 599-605

“ A compilation of research findings from scientists all over the world who used all kinds of research methods. The bottom line
to all these studies: musical training has a profound impact on other skills including speech and language, memory and
attention, and even the ability to convey emotions vocally all because it adds new neural connections. Actively working with an
instrument and musical sounds enhances neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to adapt and change. The Northwestern
researchers concluded their findings make a case for including music in school curriculums: “The effect of music training
suggests that, akin to physical exercise and its impact on body fitness, music is a resource that tones the brain for auditory
fitness and thus requires society to re-examine the role of music in shaping individual development “

Nina Kraus and Bharath Chandrasekaran, Northwestern University

Increasing Neural Synaptic Connections

One Year of Musical Training Affects Development

of Auditory Cortical-Evoked Fields in Young Children
Our Faculty Brain (2006), 129, 2593–2608

“ The findings show that not only do the brains of musically-trained children have improved memories. After one year the
musically trained children performed better in a memory test that is correlated with general intelligence skills such as literacy,
verbal memory, visiospatial processing, mathematics and IQ. The Canadian-based researchers reached these conclusions
after measuring changes in brain responses to sounds in children aged between four and six. Over the period of a year they
took four measurements in two groups of children—those taking Suzuki Method instrumental lessons and those taking no
musical training outside general music in school—and found developmental changes over periods as short as four months.
While previous studies have shown that children given instrumental music lessons had greater improvements in IQ scores than
children given drama lessons, this is the first study to identify these effects in brain-based measurements in young children.”

“ Musicians are often reported to have enhanced neurophysiological functions, especially in the auditory system. Musical
training is thought to improve nervous system function by focusing attention on meaningful acoustic cues, and these
improvements in auditory processing cascade to language and cognitive skills. Correlational studies have reported musician
enhancements in a variety of populations across the life span. In light of these reports, educators are considering the potential

Affordable Tuition for co-curricular music programs to provide auditory cognitive enrichment to children during critical developmental years. To
date, however, no studies have evaluated biological changes following participation in existing, successful music education
Equitable options that include everyone programs.

We used a randomized control design to investigate whether community music participation induces a tangible change in
auditory processing. The community music training was a longstanding and successful program that provides free music
instruction to children from underserved backgrounds who stand at high risk for learning and social problems. Children who
completed 2 years of music training had a stronger neurophysiological distinction of stop consonants, a neural mechanism
linked to reading and language skills. One year of training was insufficient to elicit changes in nervous system function; beyond
1 year, however, greater amounts of instrumental music training were associated with larger gains in neural processing. We
MOZART BEETHOVEN therefore provide the first direct evidence that community music programs enhance the neural processing of speech in at-risk
children, suggesting that active and repeated engagement with sound changes neural function. “

Music brings forward emotions in all human beings and this includes even small children. Both a simple rhythm or melody

assistance. These are based in part on the number of applicants program-wide each year, as well as the
degree of need from individual families and school communities.

Please submit an enrollment for your student today as your first step to apply for tuition assistance. You can

select the option to apply for assistance during enrollment. Our Program Managers will reach out to you via
