Excerpts from Chāndogyopaniṣad Chapter 7
Svatmavidyananda
अधी भगव इ होपससाद सन मारं नारद होवाच य तेन मोपसीद तत ऊ
व मी स होवाच ॥ ७.१.१ ॥
adhīhi bhagava iti hopasasāda sanatkumāraṃ nāradastaṃ hovāca
yadvettha tena mopasīda tatasta ūrdhvaṃ vakṣyāmīti sa hovāca || 7.1.1 ||
Nārada went [for spiritual instruction] to Sanatkumāra and said, ‘Sir, please
teach me.’ Sanatkumāra said to him: ‘First tell me what you know already. I’ll
teach you from that point.’ Nārada said—

ऋ दं भगवोऽ यजु दं सामवेदमाथ णं चतु हासपुराणं प मं वेदानां वेदं रा


वं वाकोवा मेकायनं व भूत न
स वजन मेत गवोऽ ॥ ७.१.२ ॥
ṛgvedaṃ bhagavo'dhyemi yajurvedaṃ sāmavedamātharvaṇaṃ
caturthamitihāsapurāṇaṃ pañcamaṃ vedānāṃ vedaṃ pitryaṃ rāśiṃ
daivaṃ nidhiṃ vākovākyamekāyanaṃ devavidyāṃ brahmavidyāṃ
bhūtavidyāṃ kṣatravidyāṃ nakṣatravidyāṃ
sarpadevajanavidyāmetadbhagavo'dhyemi || 7.1.2 ||
Sir, I have read the Ṛg Veda, the Yajur Veda, the Sāma Veda, and the fourth—
the Atharva Veda; then the fth—history and the Purāṇas; also, grammar,
funeral rites, mathematics, the science of omens, the science of
underground resources, logic, moral science, astrology, Vedic knowledge,

snakes, plus music, dance, and other ne arts. Sir, this is what I know.

सोऽहं भगवो म वा ना तं व मे भगव शे र शोकमा सोऽहं भगवः


शोचा तं मा भगवा क पारं तारय तं होवाच य चैतद गी नामैवैतत्॥७.१.३॥
so'haṃ bhagavo mantravidevāsmi nātmavicchrutaṃ hyeva me
bhagavaddṛśebhyastarati śokamātmaviditi so'haṃ bhagavaḥ śocāmi taṃ
mā bhagavāñchokasya pāraṃ tārayatviti taṃ hovāca yadvai
kiṃcaitadadhyagīṣṭhā nāmaivaitat || 7.1.3||
‘True, I have learnt much, but I know only the word meaning. I do not know
the Self. Sir, I have heard from great persons like you that only those who
know the Self are able to overcome sorrow. I am suffering from sorrow.
Please take me across the ocean of sorrow.’ Sanatkumāra then said to
Nārada, ‘Everything you have learnt so far is just words’.

यदा वै सुखं लभतेऽथ करो नासुखं ल करो सुखमेव ल करो सुखं व


त सुखं भगवो स इ ॥ ७.२२.१ ॥
yadā vai sukhaṃ labhate'tha karoti nāsukhaṃ labdhvā karoti sukhameva
labdhvā karoti sukhaṃ tveva vijijñāsitavyamiti sukhaṃ bhagavo vijijñāsa iti ||
7.22.1 ||
Sanatkumāra said: ‘A person works when he gets happiness. He does not
care to work if he does not get happiness. By getting happiness one does
one’s duty. But one must try to understand the true nature of this
happiness.’ Nārada replied, ‘Sir, I want to know well the true nature of
happiness’.

यो वै भूमा त खं ना सुखम भूमैव सुखं भूमा व त इ भूमानं भगवो


स इ ॥ ७.२३.१ ॥
yo vai bhūmā tatsukhaṃ nālpe sukhamasti bhūmaiva sukhaṃ bhūmā tveva
vijijñāsitavya iti bhūmānaṃ bhagavo vijijñāsa iti || 7.23.1 ||
Sanatkumāra said: ‘That which is in nite is the source of happiness. There is
no happiness in the nite. Happiness is only in the in nite. But one must try
to understand what the in nite is.’ Nārada replied, ‘Sir, I want to clearly
understand the in nite’.

य ना ना णो ना जाना स भूमाथ य णो जाना


तद यो वै भूमा तदमृतमथ यद त स भगवः क तइ म य वा न

yatra nānyatpaśyati nānyacchṛṇoti nānyadvijānāti sa bhūmātha
yatrānyatpaśyatyanyacchṛṇotyanyadvijānāti tadalpaṃ yo vai bhūmā
tadamṛtamatha yadalpaṃ tanmartyṃ sa bhagavaḥ kasminpratiṣṭhita iti sve
mahimni yadi vā na mahimnīti || 7.24.1 ||
Sanatkumāra said: ‘Bhūmā [the in nite] is that in which one sees nothing
else, hears nothing else, and knows [i.e., nds] nothing else. But alpa [the
nite] is that in which one sees something else, hears something else, and
knows something else. That which is in nite is immortal, and that which is
nite is mortal.’ Nārada asked, ‘Sir, what does bhūmā rest on?’
Sanatkumāra replied, ‘It rests on its own power—or not even on that power
[i.e., it depends on nothing else]’.
गो-अ ह म मे च ते ह र दासभा यतनानी नाहमेवं वी वीमी
होवाचा त इ ॥ ७.२४.२ ॥
go-aśvamiha mahimetyācakṣate hastihiraṇyaṃ dāsabhāryaṃ
kṣetrāṇyāyatanānīti nāhamevaṃ bravīmi bravīmīti
hovācānyohyanyasminpratiṣṭhita iti || 7.24.2 ||
In this world it is said that cattle, horses, elephants, gold, servants, wives,
farmlands, and houses are a person’s glory. I do not mean this type of glory,
for these things are not independent of each other. This is what I am talking
about:

एवाध उप प पुर द णतः स उ रतः स एवेदं


स थातोऽहंकारा श एवाहमेवाध दहमुप दहं प दहं पुर दहं
द णतोऽहमु रतोऽहमेवेदं स ॥ ७.२५.१ ॥
sa evādhastātsa upariṣṭātsa paścātsa purastātsa dakṣiṇataḥ sa uttarataḥ sa
evedaṃ sarvamityathāto'haṃkārādeśa
evāhamevādhastādahamupariṣṭādahaṃ paścādahaṃ purastādahaṃ
dakṣiṇato'hamuttarato'hamevedaṃ sarvamiti || 7.25.1 ||
That bhūmā is below; it is above; it is behind; it is in front; it is to the right; it
is to the left. All this is bhūmā. Now, as regards one’s own identity: I am
below; I am above; I am behind; I am in front; I am to the right; I am to the
left. I am all this.

अथात आ श एवा वाध दा प दा प दा पुर दा द णत आ रत


आ वेदं स स वा एष एवं प वं म न एवं जान र रा डआ थुन
आ न स राड् भव त स षु लोकेषु कामचारो भव अथ येऽ थातो र राजान
लोका भव तेषां स षु लोके कामचारो भव ॥ ७.२५.२ ॥

athāta ātmādeśa evātmaivādhastādātmopariṣṭādātmā paścādātmā
purastādātmā dakṣiṇata ātmottarata ātmaivedaṃ sarvamiti sa vā eṣa evaṃ
paśyannevaṃ manvāna evaṃ vijānannātmaratirātmakrīḍa ātmamithuna
ātmānandaḥ sa svarāḍbhavati tasya sarveṣu lokeṣu kāmacāro bhavati atha
ye'nyathāto viduranyarājānaste kṣayyalokā bhavanti teṣāṃ sarveṣu
lokeṣvakāmacāro bhavati || 7.25.2 ||
Next is the instruction on the Self: The Self is below; the Self is above; the
Self is behind; the Self is in front; the Self is to the right; the Self is to the
left. The Self is all this. He who sees in this way, thinks in this way, and knows
in this way, has love for the Self, sports with the Self, enjoys the company of
the Self, and has joy in the Self, he is supreme and can go about as he likes
in all the worlds. But those who think otherwise are under the control of
others. They cannot remain in the worlds they live in, nor can they move
about in the worlds as they like [i.e., they are under many limitations].
