Summarization of the story:

The Man With The Hoe

It was written by Edwin Markham. The poem was first presented as a

public poetry reading at a New Year's Eve party in 1898. It was soon
published in the San Francisco Examiner in January 1899 after its editor
heard it at the same party. The poem was also reprinted in other
newspapers across the United States due to a chorus of acclaim. It was
used as the opening poem in Markham's 1902 collection The Man
with a Hoe and Other Poems. The poem portrays the labor of much
of humanity using the symbolism of a laborer leaning upon his hoe,
burdened by his work, but receiving little rest or reward.

Thank You, Ma’am

‘Thank You, Ma’am’ is a 1958 short story by the African-American

poet, novelist, and short-story writer Langston Hughes (1901-67). In
the story, a teenage boy attempts to steal a woman’s purse, but she
catches him and takes him back to her home, showing him some
kindness and attempting to teach him right from wrong.

Auld Lang Syne

Auld Lang Syne, Scottish song with words attributed to the national poet
of Scotland, Robert Burns. The composer is not definitely known. In English-
speaking countries, the first verse and chorus are now closely associated with
the New Year festival. The lyrics of “Auld Lang Syne” are in the Scots language.
The title, translated literally into standard English, is Old Long Since. The
words can be interpreted as since long ago or for old times’ sake. The lyrics are
about old friends having a drink, recalling adventures they had long ago.

The Lottery

‘The Lottery’ is the best-known story of the American writer Shirley

Jackson. Published in the New Yorker in 1948 and collected in The
Lottery and Other Stories, the story is about a village where an annual
lottery is drawn. However, the fate of the person who draws the
‘winning’ slip is only revealed at the end of the story in a dark twist. ‘The
Lottery’ forces us to address some unpleasant aspects of human
nature, such as people’s obedience to authority and tradition and
their willingness to carry out evil acts in the name of superstition.
