The science fiction review

In this month’s review, we look at three new science fiction films.
Life on Pluto

This is not the first time that world-famous film-maker Tim Howards has made a movie about traveling to a distant
planet, and the highly-respected director uses his experience, as well as awe-inspiring special effects, to bring a
hostile environment to life.

The movie starts in the near future when a group of astronauts take the first long-distance flight in a new type of
rocket. Their destination is the final frontier of our solar system: the dwarf planet of Pluto. Pluto is nearly 5 billion
kilometers from Earth, and the astronauts are cryogenically frozen, which means they are put into a deep sleep,
so that they do not age during the journey. The movie starts when they wake up, ready to take a smaller
spaceship onto the planet. The astronauts believe that although Pluto is a very cold planet, there might be a warm
ocean of water beneath the frozen surface, heated by the planet’s core, and that they might find alien life in this
ocean.

The astronauts have a difficult journey to the frozen surface. At one point, something goes wrong with the
spaceship and it looks like they will have to abandon their plan to land, but the pilot keeps her nerve and she
manages to turn the situation around. Once on the planet, they are faced with a bright, white landscape of ice.
They all wear special suits to prevent them from freezing because it is so cold, and there are exciting scenes when
something goes wrong with one of the suits.

Things become even more tense when they finally reach the underground ocean. Tim Howard creates an amazing
world of water where interplanetary species live. The special effects are very impressive and we see a planet of
weird creatures, seaweeds of pink and purple, and caves the size of small countries. I don’t want to tell you what
happens in case you watch the movie, but I will say that something stops the astronauts from leaving the ocean.
Can the astronauts handle what seems like an impossible situation? You’ll have to watch it to find out.

Journey to the Black Hole

This movie by director Susan Bale is set far in the future. It is about an exoplanet called Earth II on which people
have lived for many years because of environmental problems on the old Earth.

The movie starts with a family wedding, where we meet the main characters. Their joy is short-lived, however,
because on the same day as the wedding, the lives they have known are changed forever after a large asteroid
hits the other side of Earth II. Governments around the world are worried that cosmic radiation from the asteroid
will create far-reaching problems for everyone on the planet, but scientists step up to the challenge and find a
way to prevent the radiation from affecting too many people.
Unit test

Then scientists realize that there is an even larger problem. The asteroid has changed the orbit of Earth II, and
instead of orbiting its usual star, it is now moving slowly towards a black hole: a hellish and massive void which
sucks everything near it into a fiery death.

In order to survive, the people on Earth II have to somehow prevent the black hole from destroying their planet.
The couple that we saw getting married turn out to be space scientists themselves, and they take the lead to try
to turn the situation around.

At two and a half hours, it is a long movie and although many of the scenes are awe-inspiring, it is not as exciting
as it should be. I think the movie will do OK, but its success will probably be short-lived.

On Europa

You do not often get comedy science fiction movies, so this one is a welcome addition. If you know the story of
Robinson Crusoe, a man who has to live alone on a desert island, you’ll understand what I mean when I say that
this film is a kind of Robinson Crusoe set in space.

We first meet the main character, Brad, after his spaceship crashes on Europa. This is one of Jupiter’s moons and
we learn that, in this narrative, it has conditions that are suitable for life. Director Pedro Santos doesn’t reveal why
or how Brad’s rocket-powered spaceship crashes: all we see is how the man tries to survive on a different planet.

During Brad’s time on Europa, he learns what it is like to live with zero gravity. He takes things from his spaceship
so that he can build a new home, uses rocks from the planet for fuel, and learns how to grow vegetables. This all
happens in a vast world in which the green horizon surrounds the tall, blue grass, and the hero is forced to survive
on huge yellow vegetables that are shaped like pillows. The colors used in the movie make it seem like a strange
dream.

Of course, Brad is alone, but he does have a robot and his good sense of humor to stop him from being too
lonely. Parts of the movie are very funny and I highly recommend you watch it. I’d give this one four stars.
