Introduction to Welding Process

Objective: To know the types of weld and carbon or metal are welding processes and to select
the proper carbon or metal are welding techniques according to the joint and direction
of stresses.
Apparatus: 1. Arc welding machine
2. Electrodes

Safety in Arc welding process

1. Use dark lenses to protect the eyes.
2. Use gloves and apron to protect the skin and body.
3. The work piece and place of work must be perfectly dry.
4. The room where welding is being carried out must be adequately ventilated and lighted.
5. Never see the arc with the naked eye.

Theory
It is welding process in which to form a molten pool of metal heat is produced by an electric
arc, generally without the application of pressure and with or without the application of a filler
metal. It uses either AC or DC for striking the arc between the electrode and the work piece. One
terminal is connected to the electrode, the other to the work piece and circuit is completed
through an air grape between the electrode and the work piece. An air gap is generally 3 to 6
mm. the temperature of the arc varied from 3600˚C to 4000˚C.

Procedure
An arc welding operation involves the following steps.
1. Thoroughly clean and prepare the edges for proper deposition of the metal.
2. Select the electrode of proper material (having the same composition as base metal)
and size according to dimensions of the work piece.
3. Adjust the voltage to proper value.
4. Layout the work piece and connect with an earth damp.
5. Strike the arc at the correct position.
6. Take a proper run of welding. If needed take another run of the welding.
7. Clean the weld and chip off the spotter.
