System Requirements

You can install the Autodesk® Combustion® 2008 software on Microsoft®

Windows® XP Professional (SP2 or higher). This chapter describes the minimum
system requirements.

Recommended Basic Configuration

The following describes the minimum working system recommended for
Combustion 2008:

• Intel® Pentium® 4 or higher, AMD® Athlon® 64, or AMD Opteron® processor

• 2 GB free hard drive space
• 2 GB of RAM
• Qualified hardware-accelerated OpenGL® graphics card
• Microsoft Windows Media® Player or Apple® QuickTime® support
• Adobe® Flash® Player
• Microsoft DirectX®

Video Hardware and OpenGL® Graphics Cards

Some OpenGL graphics accelerator cards may display performance limitations
with specific OpenGL operations. They support hardware OpenGL but not all of
its components. Therefore, some features such as lighting effects (shadow/

1
1 System Requirements

reflection) might only work in software OpenGL mode. Other OpenGL graphics
accelerator cards work well in 3D environments but have limitations with speed
and particles and may not support hardware OpenGL. In this situation, alpha
channels would not function with particles compositing.

For the latest information on video hardware and OpenGL graphics cards, please
refer to the hardware manufacturers.

For more information on OpenGL, see OpenGL Requirements. For more

information on video hardware, see Using the Quick Capture Utility.

RAM Requirements
The Playback controls in Combustion provide real-time playback of your clip
without exporting the clip to a file. When you first play the clip, each frame is
cached in RAM. The next time you play the clip, the frames that were cached play
back in real time or near real time. You can also use the Render to RAM feature
to preview your work in real time.

For more information on previewing your work and rendering to RAM, see the
Autodesk Combustion 2008 User’s Guide or Online Help.

OpenGL Requirements
With the correct hardware, you can use OpenGL to preview composites and
increase the performance of the Particles operator. You can also render
composites from the output of the OpenGL graphics card.

Using Software OpenGL in Combustion

In the Combustion Preferences dialog, in the General OpenGL category, there is
a Global Settings option named Use Software OpenGL. This option is enabled by
default unless Combustion detects that your computer has a supported OpenGL

2
OpenGL Requirements ❚❘❘

card. For these cards, the option is disabled, so hardware OpenGL is immediately
used.

You can disable Use Software OpenGL to test the features with your card. For
example, you can display a composite in a viewport, and enable Use OpenGL in
the context menu. Make sure that the drivers for your card are up to date. If the
feature does not work as expected, your card probably does not support the
minimum requirements for OpenGL support in Combustion.

If you have a limited OpenGL graphics card, it is recommended that you set your
Combustion Preferences to Use Software OpenGL.

If you have no OpenGL hardware, software-based OpenGL is automatically used

(regardless of whether Use Software OpenGL is enabled or not).

3D Models and Games Versus Composites

Compositing software needs high texture memory and bandwidth for good
OpenGL performance. Unlike 3D animation programs and games, redrawing
textures is more common than drawing polygons quickly.
A composite, even one with a large number of layers, has a very low polygon
count compared to a 3D scene in a modeling/animation program or a game. Each
layer is usually two polygons, so even a massive composite has only a few
hundred polygons, which is no problem for most OpenGL cards.

Most games and even 3D models have a small number of fixed textures that can
be kept in memory (and are usually loaded once). A composite has full-sized
video or even film footage that is constantly changing from frame to frame.

Together, these differences result in the different OpenGL requirements for 3D

models/games and composites. For composites, the emphasis is on texture
memory (to keep as much as possible of those large textures in memory for

3
1 System Requirements

speed) and bandwidth (to keep up with the constant stream of new textures
coming from main RAM into texture RAM).

4

and delete the combustion2008 folder.

12
Combustion and Autodesk® 3ds Max® Integration ❚❘❘

Combustion and Autodesk® 3ds Max® Integration

If you install Combustion 2008 on a system with 3ds Max, you can use
Combustion to create material maps within 3ds Max. The Combustion plugins in
the 3dsmax\stdplugs folder enable you to use Combustion workspaces as texture
maps in 3ds Max. They also enable the live link between Combustion and 3ds
Max for painting on models in the 3ds Max views.

For network rendering, you must install the Combustion software on each
render-only workstation so that any Combustion material maps in the scene are
also rendered. See Installing Combustion for Network Rendering.

For information on using Combustion and 3ds Max, see Appendix B in the
Autodesk Combustion 2008 User’s Guide.

Setting Up a Broadcast Monitor

If your system has the appropriate hardware, you can use a broadcast monitor
