Abstract: According in The Borgen Project (2018) which is a no-benefit
association framed in 2003 that tends to destitution and craving, there are 3.1
million vagrants residing in Manila, making Manila the city with the most
noteworthy destitute populace on the planet. Slums are dissipated more than
526 networks in all urban areas and regions in Manila. In addition, there is an
expected 6,000 slum inhabitants from 800 families who live in the slums of
Manila North Cemetery since 1950s. Slums around a landfill are additionally
present in the city, particularly in Tondo.

Abstract: Based to the data of WHO (2018), Philippines’ poverty rate fell from
23.3 percent in 2015 to 16.6 percent in 2018, while the Gini coefficient fell
from 44.9 to 42.7 during the same year. And according to the results of a poll
performed by the Social Weather Stations (SWS), 16.8 percent
of Filipino families countrywide, or 4.8 million Filipino households,
experienced hunger at least once in the previous three months due to a lack
of food. SWS reported that 14.1 percent (3.6 million families) of the 16.8
percent had Moderate Hunger, while 2.7 percent (674,000 families) had
Severe Hunger. But despite this people in the poverty still continue in living
and survive by
collecting leftover food or pagpag and sell it to the hungry families for a couple
of pesos.

Abstract: According to Normunds Lokenbahs/LatConsul (2018), Pagpag is
an essential surviving food to the poorest part of metro manila like tondo. In
fact, many of scavenger consider pagpag as a comfort food. No matter what,
even if it’s already spoil, they don’t care, they just want to fill their empty
stomach. Amy Ignacio, she’s one of the residents of tondo and she’s been
collecting leftover food from fast-food restaurant for the past six (6) years. She
recooks all the leftover food to avoid spoiling and separate all the meat for her
children. And she said that, for six (6) years that they been eating pagpag
none of her children got sick.

Abstract: In the article of Jay Nelz (2021), he interviewed Tatay Ben. Tatay
Ben is one of the fortunate Filipino that have been eating leftover food or also
known as pagpag. He speaks out that he could still eat some decent food
from the leftovers in some restaurant or fast food but because of the
pandemic it makes it harder for the poor people like him to eat decent food
anymore. He also revealed that all the foods he collected are all useless and
nearly bones to eat.
