CHAPTER ONE
1.1. Introduction
Every Electrical Installation in residential, commercial, or industrial buildings begin with
meticulous planning and design, These designs entails various calculations influenced by factors
such as the type and purpose of the building, physical parameters and adherence to standards and
regulations set by organizations like the IEE ( Institute of Electrical Engineers), BSS (British
Standard Specification ) , NEC ( National Electrical Code), MERC ( Nigerian Electricty Regulatory
Commission ) and NESIS ( Nigerian Electricity Supply and Installation Standards). Electrical
design encompasses the planning , creation, testing or supervision of electrical equipment
installation, including lighting systems, power distribution, fire and life safety systems , electronic
components and communication infrastructure.

1.2. Scope of the project

The core area of focus in this project include:
1. Lighting Layout Design
2. Power Layout Design
3. Cable Sizing
4. Fire Detection System
5. Security System
6. Protection System Design

Given that electricity is the primary energy source for buildings, effective utilization and
safe installation are paramount. It’s essential to install electricity economically and design
the power distribution system for minimal power losses. The electrical requirements and
units in each apartment vary based on illumination levels, socket outlet numbers,
accessories and elecdt5rical appliances, tailored to their intended purposes.

CHAPTER TWO - METHODOLOGY
2.1. Lighting System Layout
There are two basic methods for calculating size, number and possible spacing of luminaires to
provide a given level (foot candle) of illumination on a given plane or surface. These methods are the
Point-by-Point method which is also known as inverse square law method and it is used to determine
what is needed to produce a given level of illumination on a given area. This method is not much used
because of its complicated and cumbersome applications. This method is useful in determine
illumination levels produced by single or multiple fixtures for spot lighting and flood lighting, while
the lumen method of lighting design is a commonly used technique of lighting design , which is valid,
if the light fittings ( luminaires ) are to be mounted overhead in aa regular pattern. The luminous flux
output (lumens) of each lamp needs to be known as well as details of the luminaires and the rom
surfaces. In this project, the lumen method was used to calculate the lighting point needed in each
room and the total lumen is expressed mathematically as follows:

Luminance x Area of working plane

Total Lumen =
Maintenance Factor x Utiliation Factor

E∗A
Phi =
MF∗UF
Where,
N = number of lamps required
E = illuminance level required (lux)
A = Area at working plane height (m2)
Phi = average luminous flux from each lamp (lm)
MF = Maintenance Factor, an allowance for reduced light output because of deterioration and dirt.
UF = Utilization Factor, an allowance for the light distribution of the luminaire and the room surfaces

2.1.1. Lighting Design Calculations

For the calculation, the table below shows building area with their different illumination
levels.

2.1.2. Lighting Points Required on the Ground Floor

Table 2.0 and 3.0 show the room type with the calculations of how the number of
luminaire to be used is determined and the type of luminaire used id Compact Fluorescent
Lamp( also known as energy saving lamp), in this design four major types of wattages used
are: 16W (1100 lumen) , 26W ( 1600 lumen), 32W (2240 lumen), 36W (2160 lumen) and
36W(2520 lumen) respectively.
