Simulating pavement surface deflections using layer elastic software like WESLEA
This exercise provides useful insights into pavement responses in general and backcalculation of
pavement modulus in particular. Backcalculation is used in evaluation of falling weight
deflectometer (FWD) data for pavement asset management.

We will simulate several pavement designs including changing modulus of asphalt and subgrade, for
example. The computed deflections at multiple radial distances will be used to demonstrate the
deflection bowl similar to results that is obtained from deflection sensors in an FWD test.
