The Pre-Doctorate is a carefully designed course with specialist modules, tailored to
the needs of international students who wish to apply to a doctoral degree in the UK.
During your course, we guarantee you an interview at one of our four Pre-Doctorate
university partners where research areas match.
PRE-DOCTORATE: KEY COURSE FACTS
English entry level: minimum IELTS 6.0 in all skills or equivalent*
(Preparatory English available if you have a lower language level)
Course length: one term lasting 12 weeks (students may take
one or two terms of Preparatory English if needed beforehand)
Start dates: September, May (one-term course); February, May
(two-term course); October (three-term course)
Entry to university: flexible entry dates depending on your

Course modules
You will study all course modules, each of which consists of 4-6 hours of contact time every week, plus further weekly self-study.
Research Proposal Design for Doctoral Study
This module introduces students to the doctorate application and
selection process, including key stages and activities. Students will
learn how to develop a research topic, how to choose appropriate
data collection methods, and how to design, plan and execute a
rigorous and viable research proposal for a doctoral degree.
Students will explore ethical issues and codes of practice in research,
define and put into context the concepts of validity and reliability,
and identify limitations of research in given proposal examples.
Students will also be encouraged to consider their specialism and
doctoral application within a wider research and institutional context.

WHAT CORE THEMES ARE COVERED ON THE COURSE?
Designing and planning a research proposal for your intended
doctoral degree and completing application documentation for the
relevant partner university as appropriate.
Introducing the key elements of doctoral-level study, including
interview preparation and development of key transferable skills.
Building on existing academic, research and communication skills
relevant to higher-level, specialised study, particularly with regard to
critical analysis and expression.
Special lectures from guest speakers, including doctoral and
post-doctoral students, as well as research-active university staff.
The Doctoral Candidate
This module presents a variety of different aspects of doctoral-level
study to students; from the pre-application stage through to the final
thesis submission and future career considerations.
Students will explore reasons for pursuing postgraduate study, and
the key skills and techniques for completing a successful application.
Students will also develop their awareness of core planning and
promotional activities involved in doctoral-level study and future
professional development.
The main aim of the module is to ensure students are aware of the
diverse range of additional activities and key transferable skills
involved in becoming a successful candidate at doctoral level.
Contact time: 4 hours per week for 10 weeks = 40 hours
(plus additional self-study)
Academic Skills and Communication for
Doctoral Study
This module familiarises students with key terminology, academic
skills and discourse types associated with doctoral-level study.
Students will learn how to find and critique a wide range of academic
sources and acknowledge these sources in a variety of text types,
using an appropriate academic register and style.
During the module, students will explore the nature of evidence
and the importance of demonstrating critical thinking in high-level
academic work, both spoken and written. The module will also
enable the students to demonstrate a critical understanding of their
subject specialism and its wider context through a written literature
review and accompanying oral examination.

DEVELOP KEY SKILLS TO HELP YOU APPLY TO A DOCTORAL DEGREE
Preparatory English
If you don’t have the English language level for entry to the
one-term Pre-Doctorate, but have at least IELTS 5.5 with no less
than 5.0 in any skill (or recognised equivalent), we can offer you
Preparatory English to help you improve your language skills to
the level required.

During the Pre-Doctorate, we guarantee you an interview for
