Thesis statement
● Need: to give a summary of your essay i the start of the first paragraph, it
helps your writing look precise and structured.
● Location: The first sentence of your first paragraph
● Make a Thesis Question. Take your essay topic idea and turn it into a
question.
● Brainstorm Answers. Write down as many ideas as you can think of.
● Pick a Thesis Answer. Look at our brainstorming and decide your main
answer.
● Incorporate the subtopics in a single sentence
For example: Pollution has numerous drawbacks that are producing
difficulties for people such as medical issues, psychological complications,
polluted food resources,....
● Make a Thesis Road Map.
● Add Emphasis.
● Specific but not too many details
 Example
● For persuasive essays: opinion based
Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are the best type of sandwich
because they are versatile, easy to make, and taste good.
● For argumentative essays: fact based
Despite the taboo, insects make an excellent food source and could
stem humanity’s looming food shortage, based on both their protein
output and the sustainability of farming them.
Structure of an essay
● Essays are supposed to include - 4 to 6 paragraphs
● 1 para - introduction
● 2-4 para- arguments/content/gist
● Last para - conclusion
● Conclusion is supposed to include a re-phrased version of your thesis statement
(last sentence of your conclusion).
● Rephrase the statement: use different words to explain the thesis statement you
have already written- use synonyms and restructure your sentence.
