Possible Hazards that Animal Raising can Cause to the People and
Community
Animal and fish raising is a good source of livelihood that one can benefit a lot
from it if it is properly managed, however, they can also cause hazard to people
and
community if certain protocols are not being followed. Animals may cause
damage to
property, harm to people, or negative effect to one’s health. Thus, animal
grower must
be well-aware of the possible hazards that their animals can cause and be
sensitive
enough to the people around.
A veterinarian must be consulted to monitor the health condition of the

Hog/swine Raising
Hogs are commonly produced animals among animal growers. They can be raised
in the backyard or in the vacant lot. Large scale piggeries should be constructed
away
from residential area considering the health hazard that these animals can cause to
people.
Hog raising is in-demand business because Filipinos are heavy consumers of
pork meat. In five to six months’ time, this animal can be sold live or as meat to
consumers. Weanlings are sold for “lechon” purposes. The supply of pork meat
during
peak seasons like Christmas time, New year and fiesta celebration is high that is why
massive production of hogs is necessary to meet the demand of supply.
Good housing, feeding racks, water troughs and septic tank should be provided
to pigs. Good source of water is also necessary since pigs’ house must be maintained
and disinfected.
Although, they require a big amount of funding for their maintenance, the return
of investment is great if skills, knowledge, and hard work are applied.
Goat Raising
Goats are also one of the most farmed
animals among Filipinos because they are
easy to raise, require a minimum
investment, and multiply fast.
Goats need good housing, feeding
racks, drinking troughs, and an open
grassland.
Chevon or goat meat is rich source of
protein and is just affordable by many. The
production of chevon meat has increased
because people opted to buy this kind of
meat for it is low in calories, saturated fat,
and has a unique taste and flavor.
Cattle or Cow Raising
Cattle raising provides meat and dairy products such as milk, cheese, butter, and
yogurt. Although they require big amount of capital investment because they are
expensive animal, they have less maintenance requirement compared to hog raising
since they just feed on grasses.
Beef is a popular meat among Filipinos and costs higher than the pork meat thus,
cattle raising has a good return of investment to cattle growers if enough knowledge,
skills and attitude are applied.
Cows need pasture land for feeding, roaming and water troughs for drinking. They
are resistant to diseases and fast-growing animals.
Milk production is a popular and a very profitable business today. In fact, cow’s
milk is used in school’s feeding program because of its high nutritive value.

following:
1.Put up septic tank for the proper disposal of animal waste.
2. Establish the housing of animals away from houses and the neighborhood.
3. Have enough fences/walls and tries to minimize air pollution caused by
decayed
animal wastes.
4. Clean and regularly disinfect the houses of animals.
5. Bathe animal regularly.
6. Have adequate space for animals to move about for exercise and promote
good health.
For instance, three to four hogs can be housed comfortably in a 2 meter by 2-
meter
concrete enclosure with roofing.
7. Quarantine new hogs for 30 days before having them joined with other hogs
to ensure
the safety and health of the regular hogs as well as the new ones.

are resistant to disease, can be stocked at high
densities, and tolerates low water quality. Catfish
are usually found in marshes, rice fields, swamps,
streams, rivers, lakes, irrigation canals, or in any body or fresh water.
Catfish are carnivores, but can feed on small bottom dwelling animals, rice
bran, kitchen refuse, fish meal, or formulated feeds.

4. Mudfish (Clarias Anguillaries)

Mudfish is among the fish that can be cultured in the backyard. This fresh
water fish is locally known as “dalag” in tagalog and “haluan” in Cebuano. They
usually lived on rice fields, streams, irrigation canals, swamps, marshals, rivers,
