Hello! Why Animals raising a popular backyard business?


How do you raise animals in scientific way? What benefit do you get from
raising animals? Is it important to raised animals/fish? Why? Do you have
animals at home?

Animal raising is a popular livelihood of many Filipino families.


Backyard raising the most common in many rural areas whether this is fish,
goat, or cattle raising. It is always best to start on the backyard and later go
on large-scale.

After going through this module, you are expected to:

care of each animal and how you can market them.

What’s New

Before we will proceed, let us know the kinds of animals to


raised?

Do you have an idea how to raise four-legged /two legged


animals/fish?

Here are some examples of these animals.

1. Cow is a domesticated ungulate, a member of the family


Bovidae. Cows are raised as livestock for meat (beef and veal)
dairy products (milk) and as draught animal (pulling carts,
plowing among others).

2. Goat is an animal that is easy to raise, resistant to disease


and eats plants such as dry grasses. Growing goats does not
require wide spaces and the abundant supply grasses in the
farm make it an ideal place for the production of these animals.

3. Milkfish a bright and silver colored fish species that can be
raised in brackish or saltwater ponds and also in marine water
fish pens.

4. Tilapia is a species of fish that can be raised in farm


cultured ponds. This type of fish is usually grown in fresh
water and its culture started in the 1970’s in Laguna de Bay.

5. Catfish a type of fish that has a large head and long thin
parts that look like a cat’s whiskers around its mouth. This
type of fish has the ability to live for a long time out of water
like during draughts.

6. Carp is one of the most farmed fish out of the many ornamental
fish species.

When animals and their houses are not properly maintained it can cause
number of hazards for the people in the neighborhood and community. Are you

Let’s Know

• Possible Hazards of Animal Raising to People in the Community

1. Pollution- Animal waste that is not properly disposed and is left exposed
in the backyard can produce a very unpleasant smell causing air
pollution. It can attract flies and insects which can be carries ofdiseases-
causing bacteria and other.

2. Infection and diseases – Flies and insects carrying disease- causing


bacteria can settle on food and belongings of the family members, thus
contaminating the food and belongings which cause diarrhea, food
infection, skin infection, and other diseases.

3. Fly and insect infestations – if not controlled, flies and other insects
can multiply fast, then spread out in the community causing
disturbance, stress, and diseases.

Animal and fish raising is one of the sources of livelihood of many


Filipinos especially in the rural areas. It is a small industry that can be
done in one’s backyard or vacant lot with knowledge, skill and hard work.
It can be a profitable business. However, there are some to consider for it
will brought hazards to neighborhood and community. There are ways to
prevent hazards brought about by raising animals.

• Ways to Prevent Hazards Brought About By Raising
Animals
1. Put up septic tanks for proper disposal of animal waste.
2. Establish the housing animals far from the houses and
neighborhood.
3. Have sufficient fences/ walls and tries to minimize air pollution
caused by wastes.
4. Clean and disinfect regularly the houses of animals.
5. Bathe animals regularly.
6. Have adequate space for animals to move about for exercise and
promote good health.
7. Quarantine new hogs for 30 days before having them join other hogs
to ensure safety and health of the regular hogs as well as new one.
8. Consult an veterinarian regularly to ensure the health condition of
every animal.
9. Animal that die must be buried properly and immediately to prevent
the spread of possible infection and disease.
10. Maintain a health and sanitation program for animals to ensure their
health and safety.

implementing regularly a health and sanitation program for the
animals.

With the increasing population, there is a corresponding increase in the


demand for good meat as well as fish: some of it bangus, tilapia
shrimps, and other fish harvested from rivers, lakes and the sea.
The production of cattle/cow, goat and carabao comes from backyard
raising. The meat of these animals goes directly to different markets in
our country and is sold for household consumption.

Jimuel Omila – work as operation marketing at SMG Aqua venture


located at Purok 21, Sitio Royeca, Bula General Santos City. He
is 28 years old his experienced taught him a lot in handling
fingerlings (Milkfish) for six years in the business. Before he is a
field worker, like feeding fishes but because he is a hard work
and discipline he is promoted to a higher position.

Hernani Dela Costa – work as Feeder of Milkfish at SMG Aqua


venture. He is a hardworking man. He is 58 years old. As a worker
he gave proper food on time to fishes so that fishes will be harvest
at a right time.

Santi Lagnayan – he is the head in the Field of SMG Aqua venture.
He inspect every now and then that all the fishes in the pond have
the right amount of food. Santi is not a native of General Santos
City. He is from Malita, Davao Occidental. He has an experienced
of seven (7) years in Blackish fish raising. Working in SMG is fun
and enjoyable. He love his work and the fish.

RodegioGananahan- this man raised four-legged animal. He raised


cow as source of living. He is 44 years old. He live in Purok 21,
SitioRoyeca, Bula General Santos City
