INDICATORS FOR HARVESTING/CAPTURING

ANIMAL/FISH RAISED

Harvesting of animals and fish are done based on different indicators such as

animal size, weight, and number of months raised. Farmers sometimes harvest their

animals/fish as the need arises. Four-legged animals like cow, goat and pig indicators

largely rely on actual observation of the farmers to their animals being raised or grown.

Farmers should use or follow indicators according to the growth or quality of their farm

produced. The tables below show indicators for harvesting/capturing animal/fish.

Table 1: Indicators for Harvesting/Capturing Four-Legged Animals

ANIMAL NO OF DAYS HARVEST SIZE
PIG (intended for 4 months to one year old or approximately about 110 kilos and
pork and bacon) 120 to 365 days above
GOAT 3 to 5 months or 90 to150 days 25 kilos and above

COW 367 days or 1year approximately 300 kilos and above

5
Different kinds of fish are harvested in different seasons. However, what
important is the proper care of the fish at all times to ensure a good harvest.

Table 2: Indicators for Harvesting/Capturing Fish

FISH NO OF DAYS/MONTHS HARVEST SIZE
TILAPIA 240 days or 34 weeks or 16 to 20 ounce (400-500grams)
8 months
BANGUS 7 to10 months 30 to 40 cm or about 250-
(milkfish) 3 to 4 months 500 g. (30 cm long)
HITO 18 to 24 months to market 20 to 40 cm or 300 to 450 g.
(catfish) (1-2lbs) 20-25 cm. long

Harvesting Tilapia
Tilapia shows fastest rates of growth that takes 240 days or 34 weeks to reach a

400-500 grams (g.) harvest size. That's why raising them is profitable. Catching them

for sale starts when they become 400g. in weight. But we recommend harvesting them

when they become 500g.

Harvesting Milkfish
Milkfish is considered in a market size when it is about 30 cm. long. If conditions

are good, growing milkfish from 1.5 cm. to market size usually takes 7 to10 months.

The culture period (cycle) in brackish water pond is usually between 3 to 4

months from fingerling to marketable size of 250 g. –300 g. Sizes at final harvest

typically range from 350 to 500 grams. Partial harvest when the fish have reached an

average body weight (ABW).

Harvesting Catfish
The rearing period depends upon the size of fingerlings stocked. Seven to ten
cm. fingerlings culture period lasts about four months while 3 cm to 4 cm fingerlings
need six months. When the fish are about 20 to 25 cm long you can start harvesting
partially or completely.

Remember that animal/fish farming can be more profitable when the following

indicators such as animal size, weight, and number of months raised are considered

in harvesting/capturing. Farmers sometimes rely on their actual observation to the

animal being raised. It is necessary to understand these indicators in order to have

successful harvest and minimize wastage of time and effort.

SKILLS IN HARVESTING/CAPTURING
ANIMAL/FISH

Animal/fish raising is one of the sources of livelihood of many Filipino families

today. It can be done in backyard or in a small lot nearby. The knowledge, skills and

hard work are the keys to make business profitable. Harvesting/capturing of these

animals is not that easy. We need help from other workers to prevent any untoward

incident that may happen.

Slaughtering and Butchering of Four-Legged Animals

Slaughtering refers to the killing of animals while butchering refers to the

process of cutting the meat according to butcher’s cuts and making it presentable to

customers or consumers.

slaughterhouse- a facility where animals are

slaughtered such as pig, cow and goat

10
The pigs are led by one through a small entrance in a contained pen where they

are stunned by electrocution. When they fall to their side, they are cleaned by being

placed in a small pool of scalding hot water. The butchers clean out any layer of dirt

left on their skin, heads are chopped, and strung up to be butchered.

Fish can be harvested in several ways, either from a pond filled with water or

drained according to your purpose and circumstances. Here are some methods of

harvesting/culturing fish using different devices:

1. handline – This is a fishing device which uses vertical line or bamboo pole
with a string tied to one end to which a hook is attached. A bait
is placed at the end of the hook to attract the fish.

2. gillnet - This is a fishing device used

to catch catfish, milkfish and
tilapia where the gills of the
fish get entangled in the
net.

3. fish trap or salakab – This is a device made of bamboo used to catch tilapia,
catfish and other freshwater fish.

4. fish corral or baklad - is a guiding barrier constructed from bamboo or

fishnet which is set up to direct the
movement of fish into a desired area. It
is used to catch tilapia.

11
Direction: Write the different skills in harvesting/capturing animal/fish.

PREPARING MARKETING STRATEGIES OF
ANIMALS/FISH

Effective marketing starts with a considered and well-informed marketing

strategy. A good marketing strategy helps you define your vision, mission and

business goals and outlines the steps you need to take to achieve these goals.

A marketing strategy sets the overall direction and goals for your marketing. It

is, therefore, different from a marketing plans which outlines the specific actions you

will take to implement your marketing strategy. Your marketing strategy could be

developed for the next few years while your marketing plan usually describes tactics

to be achieved in the current year.

Writing Successful Marketing Strategy

1. Identify your business goals.
To develop your marketing strategy, identify your goals, so that you can define

a set of marketing goals to support them. Your business goals might include:

• increasing awareness of your products and services

• selling more products from a certain supplier
• reaching a new customer segment.

A simple criterion for goal-setting is the SMART method:

Specific - state clearly what you want to achieve

Measurable - set tangible measures so you can measure your results
Achievable - set objectives that are within your capacity and budget

15
Relevant - set objectives that will help you improve particular aspects
of your business
Time-bound - set objectives you can achieve within the time you need
them.

2. State your marketing goals.

Define a set of specific marketing goals based on the business goals you listed

above. These goals will motivate you and your team and help you benchmark your

success. Examples of marketing goals include increased market penetration (selling

more existing products to existing customers) or market development (selling existing

products to new target markets).

Make sure your overall strategies are also practical and measurable. A good

marketing strategy must not be changed every year but revise when they have been

achieved or met. Also, you may need to amend your strategy if your external market

changes due to a new competitor, technology or your products substantially changed.

3. Research your market.

Research is an essential part of your marketing strategy. You need to gather

information about your market such as its size, growth, social trends and

demographics (population statistics such as age, gender and family type). It is

important to keep an eye on your market, so you are aware of any changes to ensure

your strategy remains relevant and targeted.

4. Profile your potential customers.

Use your market research to develop a profile of the customers you are

targeting to identify their needs. The profile will reveal their buying patterns including

how, where and what they buy. Regularly review trends so you don't miss out new

opportunities otherwise your marketing message will become irrelevant. To find new

customers, make sure your marketing strategy also allows you to maintain

relationships with your existing customers.

16
5. Profile your competitors.
Similarly, as part of your marketing strategy you should develop a profile of your

competitors by identifying their products, supply chains, pricing and marketing tactics.

Use this to identify your competitive advantage — what sets your business apart from

your competitors. You may identify the strengths and weaknesses of your own internal

processes to help improve your performance compared with your competitors.

6. Develop strategies to support your marketing goals.

List your target markets and devise a set of strategies to attract and retain them.

An example goal could be to increase young people's awareness of your products.

Your corresponding strategies could be to increase your online social media presence

by posting regular updates about your product on Twitter and Facebook, advertising

in local magazines targeted to young people and offering discounts for students.

7. Use the 7 P’s of marketing.

Identify your tactical marketing mix using the 7 P’s of marketing. If you can

choose the right combination of marketing across product, price, promotion, place,

people, process and physical evidence, your marketing strategy is more likely

successful.

8. Test your ideas.

In deciding your tactics, do some online research, test some ideas, staff and

customers’ approaches then review what works. You will need to choose several

tactics in order to meet your customers' needs and target market to improve sales

results.

COMPUTING THE INCOME EARNED FROM

MARKETED PRODUCTS
(GROSS SALE – EXPENSES = NET INCOME)

Computing Your Sales and Earning

In any livelihood activity, keeping a record of expenses is a must. You need to

find out whether you are gaining or losing in your activities or business. Based on the

record or list of expenses made and total sales of your products, you can compute

your earnings.

Net Income- refers to the amount earned that has left over after its expenses
Gross Sale- the total amount earned and recorded from the sales of products
Expenses- represents the money spent or the total cost incurred of doing the
products such as wages/labor, feeds and maintenance

24
Example Problem:

Mang Kardo own a backyard goat raising in Rizal Province. He raised 5 goats.
After 3 months, he sold the goats at Php 3,500.00 each. How much did he earn
if the total amount of expenses is Php10,000.00?

Steps in Computing the Income Earned from Marketed Products

1. Add all the expenses.
2. Compute for the total sales. (Note Steps 1 and 2 can be interchange)
3. Subtract the expenses from the total sales. The difference is called Net
Income

COMPUTATION:
Gross Sales – Expenses = Net Income

Given Facts:
5 goats sold for Php3,500.00 each
Total expenses = Php10,000.00

Step 1. Solve for total sales (Gross Sale)

5 x Php3,500.00 = Php17,500.00
Step 2. Solve for Total Expenses
Php10,000.00
Step 3. Solve for Net Income
Gross Sales – Total Expenses = Net Income
Php17,500.00 – Php10,000.00 = Php7,500.00 - Net Income

Therefore:
Mang Kardo earned Php7,500.00 from his 5 goats.
