"KES launches Ladderized Approach in Reading"

By: Johanna Andrea L. Anlagan

In a major stride towards enhancing literacy skills among pupils, a
groundbreaking reading intervention program has emerged as a beacon of hope for
educators and parents alike. The initiative, implemented in Kalugmanan Elementary
School has witnessed a remarkable transformation in pupils' reading abilities,
demonstrating the potential to bridge educational gaps. With this, Kalugmanan
Elementary School launched Ladderized Approach in Reading- An innovation to
improve the delivery of the reading program with the ultimate objective to produce
learners with highly proficient reading ability and engage in reading activity as a source
of fun and recreation for School Year 2023-2024.
For the first run of the program, all learners will be assessed during the first two
weeks of the start of the school year. EGRA will be used to assess the reading level of
Grades I to III and non-readers in the higher grades. PHIL-IRI will be used for grades III
to VI in Filipino. There are identified teachers who are trained to conduct the pre-
assessment. Assessment was conducted on the first and second week of September
2023.
After which, section advisers shall prepare a list of their learners based on their
reading level. Each intervention teacher shall conduct the intervention for the level
assigned to him/her within two weeks. Intervention classes shall take place one hour
daily (Monday to Friday for two consecutive weeks which is the span of every
intervention cycle). The first conduct of intervention classes was on September 25,
2023.
During the third week of the cycle each learner undergoes an assessment in their
different level. An identified trained assessor in every level will conduct the assessment.
The assessment tool is taken from the toolkit designed per level. After the assessment,
the assessor submits all the RPRC to the respective advisers. The advisers then shall
update the Reading Progress Record (RPR) of their learners based on the Reading
Progress Report Card (RPRC). The school head and the master teacher/s shall monitor
and ensure quality assurance mechanism.
To ensure the success of the intervention program, Sir Mark Joseph Z. Lloren,
Head Teacher I of Kalugmanan Elementary School has invested in training sessions for
teachers. Workshops and professional development opportunities equip educators with
the tools and techniques necessary to implement the program effectively. This
commitment to ongoing teacher development enhances the sustainability and impact of
the reading intervention initiative.
School officials are exploring opportunities to share their best practices with other
educational institutions, contributing to a wider adoption of effective reading intervention
strategies.
The school's commitment to literacy enhancement through this proactive reading
intervention program not only reflects a dedication to academic excellence but also
serves as a model for other institutions looking to make a lasting impact on pupils'
educational journeys. Kalugmanan Elementary School stands at the forefront of
educational innovation, paving the way for a brighter future for its pupils.
