DURIO is a latin word for Durian, the most iconic fruit in Davao region and even in Mindanao and

also
widely known as the “King of Fruits.” This fruit has become a symbol to the region especially to the city
of Davao. Due to Davao’s fertile and rich volcanic soil as well as the climate making it suitable to sustain
its mass production.

The Durio Tower is a state-of-the-art skyscraper complex that is situated between the Island Garden City
of Samal and Davao City. A kind of like symmetrical plan is being developed in the plan as seen in the
perspective. It has a multiple purposes that can carry multitude of people in accordance to its zoning,
this includes residential, commercial and recreational spaces. The concept itself was taken specifically
from the flesh and seeds of durian that can be seen on the middle up to the tip of the skyscraper while
the lowest portion of the building got its concept from the stout spines of the fruit.

Structure-wise, the tower is supported with Braced Frame Structural System. The Braced Frame is a
structured system designed to withstand wind and earthquake forces. Members in a braced frame are
not allowed to sway laterally. Therefore in this skyscraper, the beams and columns are generally
arranged in an orthogonal pattern in both elevation and on plan. The resistance to horizontal forces is
provided by two orthogonal bracing systems, the vertical and horizontal bracing. A pin connections are
used to make beam-column joints & connection, it does not transfer moments. Also, the glass windows
are equipped with Photovoltaic solution which generates free and clean electricity thanks to the sun,
turning buildings into somehow vertical power generators. It also provides thermal and sound
insulation, ensuring great filtering power as 99% of UV harmful radiation and up to 95% of IR radiation
can be absorbed.

Cultural viewscapes and buildings are being developed in the region nowadays and by having Durio
Tower as part of would it would be a massive transformation and pride not just in Mindanao but even in
the world. Making it one of the Philippines’ owned recognizable skyscraper.
