4.0 implementation. You’ll walk through enterprise asset maintenance
strategies and how technologies like machine learning, AI, and Internet of
Things (IoT) help improve the performance of physical machines and other
assets. Key SAP solutions in this space are discussed including SAP S/4HANA

Intelligent Assets
This chapter introduces SAP’s solutions for intelligent assets (SAP
S/4HANA Asset Management, SAP Asset Strategy and Performance
Management, SAP Business Network Asset Collaboration, SAP Asset Per- 6
formance Management, and SAP Predictive Asset Insights) and explains
how they can be applied to digital manufacturing. Each section intro-
duces one solution with architecture and integration with peripheral
software components, functionalities, and benefits.

In the previous chapter, we covered the details of SAP solutions for intelligent factories
with respect to Industry 4.0. In this chapter, you’ll learn about intelligent assets, enter-
prise asset maintenance strategies, SAP S/4HANA Asset Management, SAP Asset Per-
formance Management, and SAP Asset Strategy and Performance Management, along
with their functionalities and architecture. This chapter also explains the main func-
tionalities, architecture, and benefits of SAP Predictive Asset Insights and SAP Business
Network Asset Collaboration.

6.1 What Are Intelligent Assets?

Intelligent assets refers to another key pillar of Industry 4.0 that is also linked with intel-
ligent factories to implement the Industry 4.0 concept in the reality of manufacturing
process. In intelligent factories, you’ve learned how highly automated and connected
production processes help to improve productivity in shop floor manufacturing. To
achieve improved productivity and smooth manufacturing processes, it’s also required
to keep the assets operational as much as possible, which depends on the performance
and condition of assets in intelligent factories. Manufacturers want to keep the manufac-
turing process up and running with almost zero downtime, and asset downtime can be
minimized with proper maintenance of assets and advanced asset health monitoring.
The traditional scheduled maintenance approach of assets can help to keep the manu-
facturing operation in running condition to some extent, but data-driven asset health
analysis and predictive maintenance can provide more robust solutions for asset
maintenance. In data-driven asset maintenance, sensors attached to an individual
asset can provide data in a centralized hub where artificial intelligence (AI) driven
analysis can provide predictive maintenance reports for individual assets, and intelli-
gent mechanism can propose perfect maintenance timing for manufacturing assets to
