INTRODUCTION

Traffic volume can be defined as the number of vehicles or pedestrians passing a given point

on a lane or carriageway during a specified period of time. It can be termed as Traffic flow

Survey or simply the traffic survey. It is defined as the procedure to determine mainly

volume of traffic moving on the roads at a particular section during a particular time. It

means determining the number, movement and classification of Roadway vehicle at a given

location or point of traffic stream. So it is defined as the procedure to determine mainly

volume of traffic moving of traffic moving on the road at a particular section during a

particular time.

Objectives of Traffic Volume Study:

i. Geometric Design

ii. Roadway traffic Design.

iii. Planning purpose.

iv. Improvement Purpose

v. Dynamic Traffic Management

vi. Information on the Vehicular distributions over a particular area

Importance of Traffic Volume Study:

i. Increases the efficiency and life of roads.

ii. Reduces traffic volume at a particular section

iii. Provide better means for development of infrastructures.

iv. Provide better means to utilize other roads in case to special events in the city

v. Provide estimate of no vehicles against no of persons.

vi. To provide data needed for decision making process of professionals

vii. To know the traffic needs of people leaving in a particular area.

LITERATURE REVIEW

Traffic volume surveys have been used for over a century to help with transportation

planning and management. The first traffic volume surveys were conducted in the early

1900s, using simple manual counting methods. In the 1950s, new technologies like loop

detectors were introduced, which allowed for more accurate and efficient data collection.

With the advent of computers and GPS tracking in the 1980s and 1990s, traffic volume

surveys became even more sophisticated and widespread. Today, new technologies like big

data analytics and machine learning are being used to generate data for Traffic Volume

Survey automatically without much effort. There are 10 different areas that can be covered by

a traffic volume survey:

- Roadway classification.

- Traffic flows.

- Traffic volumes.

- Traffic speeds.

- Traffic counts.

- Traffic composition.

- Vehicle occupancy.

- Turn movements.

- Travel times.

- Crash data.

- Travel behavior.
METHODOLOGY

There are two methods of carrying out Traffic Volume Survey. They are

1. Automatic Counting Method: This method include the use of an automatic means to

collect data, it involves minute effort of man and it is more accurate and reliable compared to

the other method of carrying out Traffic Volume Survey. The only disadvantage is the capital

extensiveness of the method, and it requires technical skills to set up.

2. Manual Counting Method: This method is used since it requires little or no capital.

98% of the process is carried out by man, and it is easier to set up.

Methods we have selected

For the course of this practical, the Manual Counting Method is selected due to these reasons:

i. Unavailability of Instruments

ii. It is the simplest amongst all studies

Weather Condition: Throughout the survey, the weather condition was clear and there is no

record of storm and rainfall.

Location of Survey: This survey was carried out at Timi Market Junction, through Agip

road, Ede, Osun State.

Survey Procedure:

i. Determine the type of survey to be conducted (Manual, or automated)

ii. Collect data on traffic volume

iii. Analysis and interpretation of data

iv. Development and recommendation in accordance to the interpreted data.

CONCLUSION:

The data collected from traffic volume surveys is essential for transportation planners and

engineers. With this data, they can determine the level of service on a particular road or

highway, assess the need for improvements, and design solutions that will improve traffic

flow and reduce congestion. Traffic volume surveys also provide valuable information on

how traffic patterns change over time, which can help to identify future trends and needs.

This data is used to develop long-term transportation plans and policies that ensure efficient

and safe transportation systems.

RECCOMMENDATION:

i. Trained and skilled enumerators should collect data which is first requirement of

Manual counting.

ii. Automatic counting system should be introduced for more reliable data.

iii. Actual expansion factor should be introduced for Nigeria country.

iv. For design purpose minimum 3 days data should be collected.
